Kenny slumped forward over the helm console, staring out the viewscreen at the warp tunnel they were flying through. He was supposed to be paying attention to the helm console, but really, nothing had happened for several hours. One of the worst parts of Omega-shift was how quiet the whole ship was. Most hours of the day, there’d be crewmen coming on and off the bridge to do maintenance, calls from the various departments asking for things, and just in general a more lively atmosphere. The lights weren’t dimmed on the bridge like they were in a lot of the main corridors around the ship when it was in night mode.In general, the helmsman was bored, and there wasn’t much that would fix that.
Ken Fleet, Helm
Lt. Isaac Black was in the captains chair he was reading a pad he looked up “ Everything ok up there” he asked the helm.
Lt. Isaac Black (AC)
“Mmhmm,” Fleet muttered in response, letting out a sigh. “Just tired of being stuck on night shift. I wanna be active the same hours as my girlfriend so we can actually hang out instead of just leaving notes.”
The lift doors opened and a trim man of average height and wispy blonde hair stepped out. He was whistling as he carried a battered brief case like thing. Those on the bridge would recognize him as NC Galen Sideris, or, as most would say, just Galen. His whistling didn’t stop till he was three steps in at which time he stopped moving and whistling and looked around, his head bobbing either to an internal tune or, perhaps he was counting something. “Evening folks, Lieutenants and all,” he said. “Sorry to break up this evidently lively discussion, but duty calls.” He pulled the case over and tapped it. It gave a semi-hollow sound. “Firmware updates. Permission to get to it, sir?” he asked Black.
- NC Galen SiderisBlack looked up from his pad his glasses were on the tip of his nose “Go ahead sir carry out your orders” he said as he adjusted his glasses.
Lt. Isaac Black (AC)
“And I thought I worked for a living,” he said with a hopefully disarming smile at the ‘sir’ comment. Moving to an unused console he set the case down on the seat and opened it, pulling out a tangle of cables, a tricorder scanner of sorts and multi-driver.
Kenneth’s head shot up and he looked from the AC to the newcomer. He leaned back in his chair, staring at the starfield. He gave a cursory glance over the nav controls, making sure they were still nicely on course. Yep. Still on course.
Fleet, Helm
“Since you’re there shall we start with the helm?” he asked, one hand wrestling with the tangle of cables in the hopes they might free themselves by virtue of gravity.
- Galen, NC EngineerIsaac smiled “we’ll fleet maybe we can switch your shifts around if you like but my father always told me is to make the time”
Lt. Isaac Black (AC)
Galen tugged the cable straight with his teeth as he got to the helm. He glanced at Kenneth as he knelt by the side and began unscrewing a panel. “This shouldn’t hurt a bit. I think.” The panel off, he peered inside and blew into the opening. A small cloud of dust came out. “Just like sand. Gets everywhere.” He peered in and then reached with the cables to connect them. “Let me know if anything blinks on your console?”
While he did that he tried to fathom what the conversation was about. Make the time on shift? Or use it? Coming into conversations, or in his case, eavesdropping on conversations was never fun without context.
- Galen, NC Eng“I’m a good officer, I don’t complain about the shifts I get - at least not to my superiors,” Fleet said with a cheeky grin. While Isaac may be a department head and himself not, the Armory Chief didn’t have a higher rank than Kenny. The engineer’s question caused Kenny to stare at the Helm station for a few moments, looking for anomalies. “Nah, looks fine. You sure you should be doing this while we’re in Warp? Couldn’t that be a problem?”
Fleet, Helm
“Haven’t had a critical incident since the Walker sub-program was devised. It creates a firewall not letting the board initiate any changes until it has done a sub-routine to confirm successful installation with no errors.” The way he said it made it sound like he had said that a lot.
Isaac looked at the engineer “Yes the helm Officer is right. May I see your work orders really quick” he asked “ if your work orders check out then I will give the order for fleet here to drop out of warp”
Galen fished around in the case, pushing aside other cables and tools to then pull out a small hand held display. “Have a look.” The display held a list of jobs for that month, this being one of them.
- GalenOCC: and why were there be dust on a vacuum sealed ship that is sterilized
OOC: Seem to have missed that reference. Where was that referenced?Isaac took the pad and looked it over. He then started to verify it with his pad “Ok mr. Fleet take us out of warp” he said giving the pad back “ make it fast” he said to the engineer.
Lt. Isaac Black (AC)
Kenny typed a few commands into the Helm Console and flicked a switch or two, and the ship came smoothly out of warp somewhere in the vast nothing between star systems. There was nothing but wide empty space around them for light-years.
“It’s nice to see the stars instead of the inside of a warp bubble, even if it’s only for a few minutes,” he commented.
