Unlike team 1 with their noise of the town, the area team 2 was in was relatively quiet and peaceful. Rumbles were felt in the ground from some kind of source but they were likely distant impacts far out of full hearing range.

Baumann reached into his bag and pulled out a pair of digital viewers and began to scan the perimeter of the base.

Kenneth looked around, surveying the area. He pulled out a pair of sunglasses from his pocket and began to quietly survey the area.

Bohannon said, “Well, if we are going to have walk along ways, I will need help carrying my equipment.”

At least they were not being chased, shot at, or anything else. It might be a quiet mission.

Bohannon, CE

“Pass some my way. And remember keep our equipment hidden as much as possible, and for goodness sake, don’t leave anything behind.”

Jonathan felt the rumbling in the ground and wondered if they were feeling the impacts from the missiles they had seen in orbit.

“Alright, Commander,” he said looking over at Baumann. “Why don’t you take the lead. Let’s go find out what they are hiding out at this base.”

Cmdr. McKnight - XO

A moment later, Ari’s voice came across the XO’s communicator. [O]Ari to Jonathan… everyone safe? [O] She felt odd using first names. But with not knowing who could potentially be listening, she thought it better than last names and especially ranks.

[O]We all made it,[O] he paused for a second. [O]Ari.[O] That was weird, but he understood why the Captain had decided to use first names.

Baumann hadn’t moved a single step since they materialized, and he continued to look at the base through the viewer, but said “Very well, Commander. We will start by assessing what we have here with us and try and get an idea of a way to approach the facility undetected. We should scan for life signs, energy signatures, and the like. Oh…” and he lowered the viewer to look at everyone, “… keep an eye open for booby traps and intrusion detection devices. If this is one side in a global war, they will most likely have such countermeasures in place.” and he went back to viewing.

Bohannon picked up his equipment (along with the help of an NE Ensign) and started to follow the landing party.

Bohannon, CE

When Noami materialized back into a solid mass, the scenery came into clarity and sharpness. Trees and bushes surrounded her as a thick, ashy white substance covered their leaves. Her hand reached out to touch the film on the leaves. It easily came away in her hand as she examined it, realizing it had to be nuclear fallout. All around them, small flakes drifted onto the ground and stacked up into layers. A surreal, grim wintry scene.

Dull, faint pops happened in the distance. The science officer flinched at the sound, her eyes darted around for the source. The echoes faded leaving no traces. It heightened her anxiety causing her to inhale then exhale.

When CE Bohannon mentioned needing assistance, Naomi held out her arm. “Pass it over and I’ll take a few things.”

She frowned at the XO’s obvious statement about leaving nothing behind. With great effort, she bit back any possible sarcasm in her mind. This wasn’t her first away mission and she wasn’t a first-year cadet. “Of course, Sir.”

Naomi grabbed the gear from the CE and let it distract her. When the CO’s voice came on, her heart to jump into her throat. She immediately swallowed it back down as the XO addressed it. At the mention of booby traps and intrusion detection devices, a soft meek laugh escaped her lips.

Her next words were said low enough that only those close could hear her. “Just the thing to calm my bloody nerves.”

She adjusted the additional weight on her body then scanned the area around them while she waited for further orders. Mentally she pled this would go smoothly.

–ENS Naomi D. Locke, Sci

The area around team 2 was thick brush and trees as Naomi had found. But not far ahead it thinned out to a wide open field spanning about a quarter of a mile in length leading up to a a 8ft tall metal wire mesh fence with razor wiring at the top. Scans in general showed no real life near them, radiation levels were up but not too dangerous for a few days of exposure. Distantly the occasional gun shot could be heard or a even more distant rumble or explosion lighting up the skyline far to their west. These were likely more common explosions and not nuclear based devices. Finally once in a while the overhead sound of fast moving jet based aircraft could be heard now and then.

Their first hurdle in approaching the base would be crossing the wide open field which did little to provide any sort of cover from this approach vector, they could try circling around for better vantages but that would take time and increase their risk of being detected or seen but at a glance through the visors there did not appear to be anyone on the surface of the base. The buildings present looked quite shut down and boarded up. Though there was a high energy reading coming from some distant below their feet ahead from the base, IDing it though didn’t match anything known yet

GM CockRoach

Baumann continued to look at the base through the visor, paying special attention to any possible surveillance devices. “We have a choice. We can either try and circle to find a better approach, but I sincerely doubt that will happen as they have cut back cover here so why would they not all around. We can approach now and hope that there is no one watching. Or we can wait for dark and make our approach. I recommend the latter.”

Baumann, Intel

“How long until nightfall?” Jonathan said as he moved over towards Baumann. “Because I agree, it would be a better decision. And it would give us more time to observe the facility before we approach.”

Cmdr. McKnight - XO

Hearing a question about nightfall, Kenneth glanced up, trying to assess the position of the sun. “It’s not clear when night will fall. Did we determine the rotational velocity of the planet?”

Fleet, Helm

“If I remember our scans correctly… “Baumann said still surveilling the facility, “… it was almost identical to Earth.”
