El bent to the console and worked a dial, here and there touching the screen to shift the image. “We’re moving around the edge of the nebula. Looks pretty with the colors.” She glanced over. “It’s exciting. Never been this close to anything like this.” She paused and said before looking back to the screen. “You must have seen a lot out here, Chief.”

“To be honest, I am usually down here and have not gotten out as much as I would like. That said, yes, what I have seen has been pretty amazing” he responded.

El frowned, disappointed. This was the great adventure. Space. Even here. As an engineer she could pull up almost any console in parallel to see what was going on from sensors and even run her own analysis of things based on her ideas. By the look of things they were still running alongside the nebula’s edge. Computing power was being taken up from sensors analyzing confusing signals. Maybe they were trying to lock them down. A couple of buoys dropped behind them as they went would do the trick, but she figured the bridge would know that straight away and was talking about that even now.

“Such as?” she prodded. With a galaxy out here to explore where few humans had ever been so much must have been astonishing. Like this. So close to something that only telescopes could really see from Earth for the majority of the population and she was on its doorstep.

Bohannon smiled and replied, “Buy me a drink sometime and I will tell you. In the meantime, let’s get back to work. Captain might need her engines at any time.”

El sighed and hid a small pout. Tapping off the link to the outside she brought up the engine status and scanned recent fuel consumption rates for any deviations from accepted parameters. They were good, though there seemed to be a short ‘jump’ in consumption when the engines moved from warp 2 to 3, but not from 1 to 2. It wasn’t a big spike that went over anything but was something to keep an eye on, especially if it spiked anywhere else.

“I’ve logged all issues with communications relay power converters that had issues when we went into the nebula. According to the logs they are all Mark 19’s. We have 21’s in stock but not enough to do them all. Apart from that we’re looking good to go if it comes to it.”

“Good job Ensign. I am going to head to the bridge for my watch, please help keep this place running for me” said Bohannon.

“Of course, Chief,” El said. Inside she was pleased to be here to watch over the engines. Not that she anticipated anything worrisome provided they didn’t go trekking back into the nebula anytime soon. On the other side she cast a glance toward Bohannon when the doors slid closed, and muttered softly. “It isn’t like I have to pedal to keep us moving.” That was her cynical moment that quickly evaporated in the face of the unknown and what they might encounter out there.

Given the issues they had on their first slide into the edge of the nebula with systems overloading particularly on communications systems El tapped away on the keys to run a series of simulations - particularly whether or not polarizing the hull at different strengths would best protect them from the deleterious effects of the nebula.

Computer: A humming noise started to come from the main computer, just then circuits started to spark like coffee had been spilled on them…then it looked like a fire might occur......

((The sparked console that blew the communications and universal translator boards came half an hour before reaching the nebula. And we’ve barely skirting the edges, so no, none should think the nebula will cause problems… worrying about them going out again, however, is acceptable. So feel free to try to explore why they went out originally.))
OOC: Ahhh .. thank you. Thought that the ship had ‘skirted the edge’ of it. Good to know!

As El looked at the timeline of the first issue with the UT and came to the realization that she had been wrong in her assumption. She had taken it from the talk on the bridge that they had been closer to the nebula than they actually had been. She was about to plot back in the logs and navigational path when that happened to try to figure out why when she heard a humming sound. Not having been here ‘that’ long she was unsure if that was a normal sound or not.

Then sparks erupted. For a second she just stared. ‘That’ wasn’t supposed to happen. “Galen!” she called out to the only other engineer she saw close by. “Overload! Cut the power to console … 4-Charlie!” she added, supposing that was what it was, but could be wrong. Springing out of her seat she ran to the nearby cabinet to pull out a fire suppressor container, all the while glancing at the console. What ‘had’ happened there?!

The sparks were from a repair made earlier that day. A tool had been left under the console. The shifting of the ship had caused it to fall across a panel beneath the console and shorted the panel once more. Thankfully, it wasn’t an active console at the time of the sparking, so no other systems were affected. The panel would need replacing, again, and a full diagnostic would need to be run once more.
