Ens. Fil didn’t know what to do, but he met a few doctors and told them about his new plan to build a new xeno-biology lab. “Hey is there anyone who can help me with the new lab?” Fil asked.

A few people approached Ens. Fil and they discussed the feasibility of where to put the new lab and what it should look like.

Lari’s ears pricked up as she heard Fil talking so she wandered over. “Hi, I’m Dr Naktal or Lari, it’s sounds like an interesting project you’re proposing. I have a keen interest in xeno-biology, I would be happy to work with you.” She added with a smile.

Ensign Naktal (Doctor)
“Thank you Ens.” Fil said, a little surprised that someone answered his request so soon. “Let’s get started as soon as we can. I’ll speak to my CSO so he’ll know. Oh one more thing, if we are to be working together, you can call me Penji. I hope this project succeeds.” Fil added.

Lari smiled warmly, “as do I,” she nodded. “And you can call me Lari, I look forward to working with you Penji, perhaps we should discuss after our shift?” she suggested. “Maybe over a coffee?” she added.

“I would love to have coffee with you Lari.” Penji said with a sparkle in his eye. “My shift is over soon, so I’ll meet you here in a couple of hours.”

Lari smiled and nodded, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. “I would like that very much,” she grinned. “It’s a date,” she added then bit her lip in case that had been a bit too forward, she hoped she hadn’t scared him off.

After Ens. Fil’s shift was over, he headed to sick bay to meet up with Lari. They had a lot to discuss, but Fil was lucky he made a new friend. “So Lari, how do we go about to create a new lab?” Both Lari and he walked to 2 forward for a cup of coffee.

Lari smiled as they entered 2 Forward, she was slowly starting to settle into life on board ship. The two young officers made their way up to the bar and ordered a drink. Lari grinned as she sipped her latte. “Well, I guess we need to make sure that we set up adequate quarantine fields for any research we want to do and it would make sense to have emergency medical supplies in case of well, an emergency,” she chuckled. “Do you have any idea the kind of research you want to specialise in?” she asked as she took another sip of coffee.

“Well, I was thinking a biology lab, specially centering on aliens.” Fil said as he took a sip of his drink. “We should separate the lab into two sections, one for the lab and the other which we can put all the quarantine protocols on it. All emergency supplies should be placed through out the lab. If we need help, we can talk with engineering to give us pointers. If you have any ideas, Lari, please bring it out for discussion.”

Lari nodded intently, it was nice to see someone with such a passion for their work. “That’s a great idea, perhaps we could have a small store of inoculations and remedies for the rarer alien illnesses?” she suggested as she thought through all the possibilities. “But you’re right, we should definitely talk to engineering to make sure the correct quarantine and safeguards are put in place, I don’t think we’d be popular if we let an exotic alien disease loose on the ship!” she chuckled.

“This is a bigger project then I thought it would be.” Fil said.

“Well, let’s get started, Lari.” Fil said.

Lari smiled warmly. “Indeed, let’s get started Fil,” she replied as she finished her drink.

“So, what do we do first, Lari?” Fil said.

Lari thought for a moment. “I guess the first thing is do we have permission and space to build? Otherwise this is just a bit of a pipe dream. Shall we talk to the XO and see if she can liberate some space for us?” she suggested.

Ensign Naktal (Doctor)

“You’re right, we should talk to the XO.” My CSO said it was OK, but if we have to use the ship’s resources, we’ll need the XO’s permission.” Fil said. “But where would we put the lab? Let’s go and see the XO together.”

The construction of the lab was going fine. After Fil talked to his CO, he then went to see Dr. Naktal and proceeded to where the lab would be.
