Emberlee sat in her quarters sipping a luke warm cup of hot chocolate as she listened to a the chaos at home. Everyone was at the house and wanted to talk. Emberlee’s mother looked frazzled. She had flour on her face and her hair was hidden beneath a hat. Sarah Atkins was the heart of the family. She always wanted everyone home for the holidays but this year was different. She showed Emberlee the tree that Emberlee’s niece and nephews had decorated. It was lopsided with the decorations but it was cute. Emberlee just smiled “They did a good job mom.” After a few more minutes, Ashlee came over and was bugging Sarah....

Sarah finally gave up and let Ashlee have the screen. Ashlee was so excited to show Emberlee the engagement ring that her long time boyfriend had finally got the courage up to ask her to marry him. Emberlee chuckled “About time.” She said “I’m happy for you. When’s the wedding and I’ll see if I can get leave to come home.” Ashlee giggled like a little school girl “It’s going to be May 4th. We’re having the wedding at Glenlo Abbey in Galaway.” She said “Nathan has managed to get our favorite singing group to be at the wedding.” Ashlee was so excited “He has Celtic Thunder coming to sing at the wedding. So you just have to be here.” She said almost pleadingly. Emberlee smiled “I’ll talk to my commanding officer and see what I can do.” About that time, Emberlee’s three year old niece came over “Auntie....why aren’t you here?”

Emberlee smiled at Nicollette “I am at my job.” She said honestly “I would love to be with you in person, but I’m talking to you.” She said “Have you been a good girl for Santa?” She asked Nicollette thought for a minute or two “I been good. Bye” She hopped off the chair and ran off to play with her brothers. Sarah came back on “David and Erin are out getting last minute things so they aren’t here.” Sarah gave Emberlee a sad smile “I miss you. I wish you were here.” Emberlee nodded “I love you too mom. I wish I could be there as well. I have to go. I’m on watch duty this afternoon. Give everyone hugs and kisses from me. There are several packages that should be arriving today for everyone. I’ll talk to you next week.”

With that final statement, the line closed and Emberlee finished off her hot chocolate, pulled her uniform up and tied her hair up in a bun and headed to the flight deck to see what was going on there. She was sad she wasn’t at home, but she was also glad that she was doing what she loved. That made being away just a bit easier.
