As the Memorial set off on its shake down cruise, the first officer thought it might be an opportune moment to speak with Nightroad about a few of her concerns. “Captain, might I have a word with you in private?” Since they were freshly away from the station, no one on the bridge should worry that there was an issue already. However, Nyx did have a few concerns with the crew.

Cain looked at Qyra and motioned towards the ready room and said, “Mr. Rado, you have the conn.”

After following her into the ready room, Cain sat down at the desk and asked, “What is on your mind Number 1?”

She stood on the opposite side of the desk, at ease, hands clasped behind her. “I saw the new CE, Lovejoy, when she reported for duty. I’m concerned that the woman isn’t quite the leader we might have hoped for. In the first five minutes of our conversation, she made statements and then took them back and made new statements that expressed the opposite of what she first stated.” Nyx licked her lips. “And just now on the bridge, she repeated herself three times about not giving her too many bumps—what does that mean, anyway?”

OOC: Please don’t think I am picking on your characters(if I mention them) because there is something wrong with them. Nyx is from a warrior backgroud where you have to be decisive, fierce and disciplined. She thinks all soldier’s should be that way and to her, the crew is made up of soldiers. This is me exploring how she thinks and interacts with the Captain and hopefully winds up reevaluating her expectations.

Cain rubbed his temples and motioned towards the chair for her to sit and relax. “I’m sure she will work out and if she needs some coaching, I sure you are up to the task.” Cain replied, “And she is new to the ship and doesn’t have the feel of what the ship can handle yet.” His Engineering past was starting to show.

“So you have no concerns about about a department head who can’t make a firm decision and stand by it? At the first second I didn’t agree with her, she said what she thought I wanted to hear.” Nyx didn’t understand why the Captain wasn’t worried about the CE’s ability to lead her department. “It was an unsatisfactory meeting, Sir.”

Cain understood the Commanders frustration and needed to respond so that she knew that the ship and its crew was his number one priority. “Oyra,” Cain replied, “How did she act towards you, was she nervous to your questions.” Cain waited a moment and continued, “She is new to her position and new to this ship. Let’s give her the benefit of that while we are on this shake down cruise and if she doesn’t ‘Cut the mustard’ then we will get her transferred back to Space Dock.”

She was quiet while she thought over Nightroad’s response. She went back in her mind to the meeting with Lovejoy. The woman had not been disrespectful–in fact, she seemed very eager to please, so she couldn’t fault her on her on the ‘technical’ side of things. Qyra also thought about what she, herself, might do, if she had to meet some other Fynarian officer and had no clue as to their beliefs and work ethics.

The Captain could see as her body relaxed, shoulders coming down and jaw softening. “Let me ask you a question. Am I intimidating? I carry myself as I did on my home planet, but from what I’ve seen on the Memorial, there aren’t many that share my mindset.” Was she being too hard on the other officers?

Cain looked at her and said, “To me not at all, but then I am the Captain and have been around Starfleet for a while but to the rest of the crew, I am sure some of them might be. It’s all about trust.” As he watched her, he continued, “When I first came to the ship, I wasn’t the Captain and hadn’t expected to be thrust into that position. The crew had no idea who I was and I had to build that trust on the fly during the mission we just completed. I recommend sitting down with the Department Heads and talking to them.”

Taking in what he said, Nyx allowed herself a moment to try and see the situation as he suggested it might be. She didn’t want to intimidate anyone purposely, but the way of the Fynarian warrior was stricter than the day to day of Starfleet, it seemed. She needed to adapt. Taking in a deep breath and letting it out slowly, Qyrs looked at Nightroad again. “Thank you, Captain. I will endeavor to be more approachable to the crew.”

“I am sure you will Qyra,” Cain replied, Changing the subject a bit, Cain continued, “When we get back from this shake down cruise we need to solidify the last few department areas that we are lacking in.”

“Yes, Sir. I believe we need to fill the CSO and CNS spots. I’ll keep reviewing possible candidates during the shakedown in order to be prepared when its over.”

“Is there anything else you want to discuss?” Cain asked.
