OOC: Anyone who is looking for somewhere to write, you are welcome to interact with Nyx as your character or as someone unknown. Just a general invitation. She will be here until the ship docks and she can get on board.

After days of travelling, Qyra was finally on the Star base that served the USS Memorial, her newly assigned ship. The Memorial’s classification was more of a battle ship than anything else, handling long range fleet support, combat actions, patrols and exploration. It was also used for command and control of combat engagements, urban pacification, policing and secure diplomatic conferences. Those activities fit much better with her ‘warrior’ training and strategic thinking abilities. Leaving her belongings at the drop off site, she made her way to the check point where two officers stood awaiting any new visitors.

Dressed in the red of command, they perked up as she approached. “Good morning Commander, may I ask why you are visiting the star base?” The taller one asked.

Even though she was very tired from the journey, Nyx took the measure of the two men as she stepped into their bubble. “Certainly, I’m Qyra Nyx, here to connect with a pilot that will take me to my new ship, the USS Memorial.”

She showed them the orders on a small PaDD she carried. “However, I’ve been travelling for quite some time and all I currently want is a bed and a meal.”

Glancing up from reading the orders, the short one spoke. “Everything seems to be in order, Sir. If you follow the signage, you will be able to get a room at the Shasta hotel. They have a fine dining room, but some of the rooms have replicators too. It all depends what you’d prefer.”

Qyra took back the PaDD and tucked it into the satchel that hung on a strap from her shoulder. “Thank you, I’ll be sure to do that. Am I free to go now?”

“Absolutely, Commander.”

As she walked past them, she caught snippets of their conversation. “I’d like to be on her ship.”

“Yeah, I’d serve under her in a heartbeat.”

Qyra shook her head slightly and continued on her way.

The station had informed Nix that the Memorial was due to dock within the next 48 hours, so all she could do was wait until it happened. Qyra was anxious to get aboard and take up her duties with Captain Nightroad. From what she’d read about him, he had a stellar career and she felt there was a lot he could teach her about command. The other officers she’d worked for were also good, but their ships didn’t deal with battle so what they offered in combat strategy was non existent.

With the entire day to fill, Qyra dressed in a fresh uniform, pinned her hair up and left her room to investigate what the station had to offer. One of the shops, Travelers’ Paradise, had many different kinds of trinkets and also some real gems hidden in the chaos. She entered the store, curious if she would find something and eager to spend some of her long saved credits.

There were trinkets from every corner of the galaxy and Qyra was genuinely pleased with many of them. Among the treasures, she found a knife. It was on the small side with only a 3 inch blade and a flat, bone handle. As she was admiring it, a large Bolian man approached her with a cheerful smile. “Ahhh, you have found one of our most popular items.” Qyra looked at him and raised her brows, inviting him to continue. “Allow me to show you why?” Curious, Nix nodded for him to continue.

The shop owner took several steps away from where she stood and picked up a sheath from another display. Having returned to her side, his smile grew more personal as he indicated her arm. “May I?”

Believing that he didn’t have any ill thought toward her, Qyra nodded, “Certainly.”

The Bolian lifted her left arm and pushed the sleeve of her uniform up till it bunched around her elbow. With quick, efficient movements, he attached the sheath to her forearm and slipped the small knife into it so it rested against the inside of her arm. Pulling the sleeve back down to conceal the weapon, he introduced himself “I am Mott, by the way, owner of this establishment. I like to put certain items out where they barely get a serious look, to see who is paying attention, and who is worth doing special business with.” He clasped his hands in front of his large body and inclined his head in her direction. “I believe you are deserving of that attention.”

Had he sensed the fighter within her? the appreciation for a fine weapon? It didn’t matter. Qyra believed she was being given an opportunity for something in the future. “I am Qyra Nix and I appreciate your confidence in me.” Her vivid blue-green eyes inspected the sleeve of her left arm where no trace of the weapon showed. “I’ll take the knife and the sheath, and if possible, a way to contact you in the future should I need something…unique.”

Mott grinned, whether at the sale or the possibility of future business, he didn’t say.

After her business with Mott, Qyra began looking for a place to get some lunch. The station had so many choices, but mainly, she wanted a spot to sit and observe the passersby. Eventually, she ran across a food business that was simple called “EAT”. The word flashed in many different languages, one at a time. She recognized a few of them, but most were unknown to her.

She found a table near the outer edge of the seating area and from a menu built in to the table, ordered a meat and potato pie for one, with iced water. In a moment, a server appeared with her meal and Qyra set to it. She ate leisurely while watching others as they navigated the shopping places within her line of vision.

Kaylee had finally found what she’d been craving since stepping off the transport — a good cup of coffee. The brew at EAT wasn’t quite like the blend she’d favored back on Earth, but the aroma was rich and the taste strong enough to banish the last traces of travel weariness.

She sat near the edge of the dining area, cradling the mug in both hands as she let her gaze drift over the bustling promenade. It was the sort of quiet observation she enjoyed — watching the little dramas of station life unfold in the space of a single meal.

It was then her eyes caught on another officer sitting a few tables away, a meat and potato pie half-finished in front of her. The pips on her collar were enough to mark her as senior staff, but Kaylee also recognized the face — she’d reviewed the incoming personnel files for the Memorial, and this was without doubt Commander Qyra Nyx, the ship’s new Executive Officer.

Kaylee took another sip of coffee, then rose with an easy smile and her mug still in hand. She stopped just short of the other woman’s table.

“Mind if I join you?” she asked warmly. “Commander Nyx, isn’t it? I thought I recognized you from the Memorial’s roster.”

She set the mug down and extended a hand across the table. “Lieutenant Commander Kaylee Baxter, Counselor. Looks like we’ll be colleagues before long.”

-Kaylee Baxter, CNS

Pulled from her own thoughts, the Fynarian looked up at the female standing at her table. A not quite piercing bluish green gaze looked from the outstretched hand up to the woman’s eyes and back down to the hand again. Earth custom. Qyra reached out and clasped the offered appendage, squeezing firmly. “Qyra Nix, you are correct.” She made a motion inviting the other woman to sit. “I believe the Memorial is due to arrive in a few hours, but you know how these things are.” There were delays and changes of plan sometimes. She hoped it wouldn’t happen that day.

Kaylee returned the commander’s firm clasp with equal confidence, her smile lingering as she eased into the offered seat. She set her mug of coffee gently on the table’s edge before folding her hands loosely in her lap.

“So, you are the new counselor.” Not a question, but a statement. It was her experience that a lot of Star Fleet’s psychology members didn’t understand how warriors thought, nor did they let certain things go as a lifestyle difference between them and the patient. However, this one was part El-Auran. If she’d lived a long life, it was possible that she would have more of an understanding than most as she would have observed more.

The blonde woman smiled.

“Yes, that’s right,” she confirmed, nodding lightly. “Lieutenant Commander Kaylee Baxter, the Memorial’s new counselor.” Her tone carried a touch of warmth, as if to soften the formality of titles and ranks.

“Tell me, your record says you are 32 years old. How does that work with the part of you that is El-Auran? Are you actually older than that or is the number accurate?”

The El-Aurian question didn’t seem to surprise Kaylee. In fact, she gave a small laugh, not unkind, but with the ease of someone who had answered it more than once before.

“My record is accurate — I am thirty-five by human reckoning. My father is human, so my life began the same way any other child’s would. But you’re correct to notice there’s more to it. From my mother’s side… well, El-Aurians tend to age very slowly once they reach adulthood. So while I’m thirty-five, I might still look like this when I’m well past a hundred.” She lifted her shoulders in a gentle shrug. “It’s less about hiding years and more about carrying them differently, I suppose.”

She tilted her head slightly, studying Qyra with genuine interest. “And what about you, Commander? If I may — I admit I’ve only had limited contact with Fynarians. Your people are said to be formidable warriors, but I’ve also heard whispers of a deep sense of honor that runs just as strongly. How do you feel about serving aboard a vessel like the Memorial, where combat and diplomacy may walk side by side?”

-Kaylee Baxter, CNS

Qyra took a moment to consider the question. “I believe diplomacy is a necessary skill for a warrior. We don’t fight just to engage with someone, we fight for a cause or for protection.” She paused to take a sip from the water glass. “I’m grateful for my posting to the Memorial, I believe my expertise will be put to better use on her than on the USS Calypso, which was a science vessel.

Her gaze shifted to the duffle still lying beneath the other woman’s table. “Is that your entire ‘kit’?”

With the Memorial due to arrive in the next few hours, Nyx decided to return to her room to pack up her belongings and then to find a place on the base’s observation deck to await their pick up. “I still need to pack my gear up. I’ve been here a few days and I’d like to be ready when they get here.

Standing at the floor to ceiling ‘window’ of the observation deck, Qyra stood at ease, weight distributed equally on both feet with hands clasped behind her back. Anticipation kept her there as she was extremely ready for the Memorial to arrive. After three days waiting for the ship to arrive, she wanted nothing more than to board her and get to work. As she gazed out among the stars, the Cmdr wondered what Captain Nightroad would be like–hopefully, they would get along and find a find a working rhythm together.
