Major Vektul came to a halt before the door marked Cmdr. Qyra Nyx – Executive Officer.

He stood for a moment in the corridor, arms behind his back, boots evenly planted. His eyes moved across the frame of the door, then to the corridor junction behind him—as though confirming his bearings.

Apparently satisfied, he stepped forward and pressed the door chime.

And waited. Silent. Still. Unhurried.

Qyra didn’t look up from the PaDD that held her attention. She was reworking three different rosters of duty assignments for the ship. “Come.” It was only when the visitor approached where she sat behind the desk that her gaze flickered up to acknowledge them.

She leaned back in her chair then, taking in the sight of the officer, giving him the once over that everyone she met had to endure. She was a warrior after all, a successful one, and that meant sizing up your opponent.

Interestingly enough, Qyra believed the Romulan was doing a bit of sizing her up, himself.

“Yes?” she asked.

OOC: I can’t remember how we decided to handle Vektul becoming Chief Engineer, since it happened during the main Sim. So, I guess we play this after the Main Sim?

OOC: That is fine, because Qyra didn’t board the ship until after the last/current mission.

IC: Vektul advanced with practiced economy—three steps forward, then to attention.

“Major Vektul, reporting as Acting Chief Engineer,” he said, voice low and deliberate. “Following the death of Lieutenant Commander Karesh during the Chronos engagement, I assumed command of Engineering under emergency protocol.”

He paused—just long enough to show deference, not hesitation.

“I am aware the position is pending formal reassignment. I am not here to petition, Commander. Only to confirm my status and receive your expectations moving forward.”

His expression remained unreadable, but his posture was perfect—shoulders square, chin slightly inclined, hands clasped neatly behind his back.

“At ease, Major.” Although it wasn’t unheard of, there weren’t that many Romulans in Star Fleet yet. As the XO looked at Vektul she didn’t sense any anxiety from him about meeting her, the first officer. Normally, there was a little something with others who met Command for the first time. “I have been made aware of the situation. Captain Nightroad filled me in. You have been given the position of Chief Engineer in your personnel record and in all ship matters and rosters, so you should stop introduce yourself as ‘acting’ from here forward. I suppose congratulations are in order?”

Nix stood and reached across the desk offering her hand. “Although there is no rank increase, assuming the position is an honor.”

Vektul did not flinch at the order to stand at ease, but the shift in posture was minimal. Hands moved from behind his back to rest calmly at his sides. The stance of a soldier—no longer rigid, but never relaxed.

He considered her words.

“Then I will cease qualifying the title,” he said with a shallow nod. “It will be Chief Engineer, from this point forward.”

As she stood and extended her hand, he paused.

The gesture was familiar—Federation custom. Romulans did not often engage in such casual physical contact, especially in matters of rank. Still, he reached out and clasped her hand briefly. His grip was firm, cool, and entirely devoid of ceremony.

“I acknowledge the honor, Commander. And the trust it represents.”

He released her hand.

“But unless a field commission is in my future, I will always remain a Major of the now-extinct Romulan Star Empire. That is not resistance to your protocol—it is simply a fact of service, and of self.”

His gaze met hers, calm and unflinching.

“I do not intend to assimilate, Commander. I intend to serve. There is a distinction.”

A beat.

“If that remains acceptable, I will fulfill my role to the best of my ability. And ensure this ship does not break beneath our feet.”

Assimilate, a strange choice of words considering it meant to take in information, ideas, or cultures and to understand them fully. Which Star Fleet was all about. It did not mean to personally take them on . Working with with Vektul would be interesting, she thought, as they released their clasped hands. “Yes Major, it is acceptable. If you don’t have any questions for me, you’re dismissed.” She continued to stand, watching the man. As they gazed at each other across the desk, there was a silent understanding. They were both soldiers, fighters, and warriors of their people. Respect.

Vektul inclined his head—slight, but exact.

“Then I have my orders, Commander.”

He held her gaze for a moment longer, a silent exchange between two officers who understood the weight of service, even if their banners had once flown in opposition.

Then he turned sharply and departed without further word, the door sliding closed behind him with mechanical finality.
