Cain walked behind the desk and looked to ensure the Commander was with him and said, “Commander, I am Captain Cain Nightroad and I was sent by Starfleet to locate this ship. Might I ask you who you are?” Cain slumped into the chair waiting for a response.

Captain Cain Nightroad

Before the XO could reply, a hologram shimmered into existence, evidently being activated on Nightroad’s voice print.

The hologram revealed the former Captain standing tall, his expression calm but serious. He began to speak, his tone measured yet filled with an undercurrent of urgency.

“Captain, welcome aboard. I regret that I can’t be here in person to greet you, but I’ve left this message to brief you on the events that have led the Memorial to its current state.”

“We were on an away mission when we encountered a derelict vessel. During our investigation, we recovered a strange cube-like artifact, along with a handful of Ferengi scavengers who had also been aboard. The cube’s purpose remains a mystery. While the Ferengi appeared to recognise its value, I doubt they fully understood what they had found. You know how Ferengi are—if it’s shiny or rare, they’ll take it, no questions asked.”

The Captain’s expression tightened slightly, his gaze steady as he continued.

“Shortly after securing the cube, we were attacked by an unidentified vessel. Based on the Ferengi’s accounts, we believe it was crewed by robotic beings they referred to as ‘Droidlings.’ Their weapons are unlike anything we’ve encountered—capable of dematerializing entire ships. Their motivations remain unclear, but it’s obvious they were after the cube.”

He paused, as if considering the gravity of his next words.

“Their pursuit was relentless. They fired their weapons at us repeatedly, and while their aim wasn’t perfect, a few glancing shots managed to hit the ship. These caused minor damage to our systems, but what was strange was how the cube reacted. The energy from their weapons seemed to feed back into the cube. I don’t believe it was intentional, but the cube began to emit massive amounts of energy.”

The Captain’s expression darkened as he started to recount the next part.

“The energy surge culminated in a powerful release, and when it happened, the other ship disappeared entirely. Whether it was destroyed, displaced, or something else entirely, we weren’t sure. But what came next left us with more questions than answers.”

He took a deep breath, before shirting his tone to one of resolution.

“By the time you’re viewing this, the Commander and I will already have left. We discovered a decaying tachyon signature on the hull of your shuttle. We’re not sure what caused it, but the XO had a theory—that it wasn’t the Droidling ship that disappeared, but rather us. That somehow, the cube’s energy interacted with their weapons and pulled the Memorial into a different time or dimension.”

The Captain’s voice become more measured as he prepared to close.

“We’ve taken the shuttle to follow the residual tachyon signature, hoping it might lead us home. Where the ship is now, we don’t know—and that’s your mission now. Protect the crew, safeguard the cube, and find a way to bring the Memorial back to where it belongs.”

With a slight nod, he offers one final thought.

“Good luck, Captain. The Memorial is in your hands now. Lead her well.”

The hologram flickered and faded off, leaving the room in silence.

I glanced down at the captain then back to where the hologram had been then back to the captain. The red of her eyes shown more clearly than when she had first appeared on the ship, and it bothered her that she hasn’t been able to feed before she arrived. “Another dimension?” Her voice was soft and bearly above a whisper.

Cain had sat up when the former Captain had started his barrage of information in the hologram. He saw the Commander was just as puzzled has he was about all this information and he still wanted to know where she came from but at this moment he knew what he needed to do first. Standing, he touched his right hand to the panel built into the desk and said, “Computer identify Nightroad, Cain W., Captain, voice authorization Nightroad 2, 8, Bravo, Zulu.

Just after the computer’s reply, Cain then said, “Computer, accept all command codes for USS Memorial, voice authorization Nightroad, Delta, 3.” and waited for the computer while keeping eye contact with the Commander.

A Hollogram of a Orb with an audio waveform display around its center appeared and began to talk with a distinctly feminine voice “Hello Captain Nightroad This is MAIZIE I am the Memorials ENINTADI AI Unit! I have recorded your taking command of the USS Memorial at this time Welcome aboard sir!” it was emotionless however clearly an AI that was still very early into development

MAIZIE

With the reply from the computer, Cain sat back down and said, “I forgot about the new computer system this ship has.” Looking at the Commander, he stated, “Now that that is complete, Commander, could you please tell me who you are and how you got here.” While Cain waited, he started looking through all the Department Heads, he would need to find an Executive Officer from within the ship, not a light task since he did not know anyone here.

While Cain was glancing at files waiting for the Commander to answer, a chirp was heard indicating someone requested entry, as the door slid open, Boomer came running in and sat next to the Commander and looked up at her. Boomer did not immediately respond to people like this and he was sure that his master was wondering what was going on.

As Cain looked at Boomer and thought, ‘Seems Boomer likes her. With the CO and XO both leaving, I seem to be in need of an XO, If i knew her name, I could look up her service record.”
