Her eyes had traced the incoming cake with surprise and curiosity. So much that so that it took a moment to register his words. “Thank you,” Faye told Harv’s retreating form before she looked at Alex and shrugged. “It’s okay, no one will.” She said it lightly, and a part of her was glad that her work would be a quiet and seamless part fo the ship’s systems. But she had worked her butt off and so had to admit that this little recognition was a really nice thing.

Holding her glass up, Faye smiled at Alex. “So… to preventing disaster,” she toasted.

Alex smiled and lifted his glass to hers. “And to a job well done, Lieutenant.” and the glasses clinked together. He took a drink and then set his glass to the side. Picking up his fork, he said “Okay… let’s see what this is all about, shall we?” and he smiled as he took a bite.

The bubbles fizzed as she sipped, creating a tingling sensation across the roof of her mouth. Once, she had had something similar, but it had been when she was a kid and had only been allowed a small taste of what the adults were drinking. It had been some sort of sparkling fruit thing, but it had been very different to this. This she liked.

The cake was another matter altogether. While he delved in, Faye tilted her head to the side and examined the shiny coating on the top. For in hand, she picked at it, trying to determine the texture. Huh, gelatinous. Interesting. Well, fortune favoured the bold, or some such thing.

The bite, much like the champagne, exploded in her mouth, full of contrasting flavours. The rich density of the chocolate, the acidity of the berries. And that subtle warmth of the cinnamon. It was hard to explain to others that this was all new to her. Yes, she had had chocolate before, but just because she was Human, didn’t mean she had experienced the same foods growing up. Her colony had a wide mixture of things they grew, so she could say she had grown up with a healthy appreciation of the foods from other cultures, but she often came to the table (as it were), with a much different experience than people expected. For example, she knew some people would give her sideways glances if she had told them that she had had strawberries before (and had grown them too), but had never had whatever this red berry was.

Her eyes, alit with surprise, gazed at Alex. “Okay, so… can I confess something?”

He chewed slowly and then swallowed. “Go for it.” he said with a chuckle as he took a sip of the champagne.

With a delicate touch, Faye reached out and picked up one of the red berries on her plate and held it up. “I haven’t had anyone make me anything like this since I was a kid, and… I don’t know what it is. I know that the texture is weird but the flavour is just worth it enough to bother eating them, and I can tell, botanically, it’s a berry. Couldn’t tell you what it was.” She popped it in her mouth and chewed on the strangely dry texture. Most berries she had known burst with moisture, and there was a small amount of that here, but definitely not what she was used.

Cochrane shrugged slightly. In his experience with other cultures, even human ones, the number of times another human had been exposed to something Earth-raised humans took for granted was pretty high.

“Its called a raspberry. They come in red and black. Red ones are a bit on the tart side, the black ones sweeter. Grow on thorny bushes. Hard to cultivate, from what I have been told. Very temperamental.” He looked at her and said “Drop a couple in your champagne, let ‘em soak for a minute. Its a really subtle shift in taste, but its really good… to me, anyway.”
