“Maybe,” Kiama laughed. She didn’t really believe that that would ever happen, but it was fun to think about. “Or maybe after both of us,” she added with a wink. “As for help, I’d appreciate it.” Pointing with one of the needles at a certain point of the combadges circuitry she continued, “I think if we connect those parts it should enhance the combadge and hopefully allow us to reach someone else on the ship. Or nothing happens. Or I just may destroy the combadge. Though maybe that would register with someone somewhere on the ship.” The frown on her face grew even deeper as she stared down at the little device in her hands. She normally wasn’t a pessimistic person, nor was she afraid of making mistakes. The latter was definitely part of the job description for scientists after all. But right now there was so much more at stake and she started to doubt herself.

Shon nodded his approval at Kiama’s suggestion and peaked over the makeshift shield of pillows at the ever-changing scenery outside. The concrete of the sidewalk on the other side of the street had been replaced by a gurgling river. One of the skyscrapers looked like it had been sliced in half, with the top half missing completely. A giant, two-story tall combadge like the one Kiama was working on had materialized half-embedded in the street. He scuttled back to Kiama’s side, watching her work intently. “You can do this. It’ll work.” His voice was confident.

Kiama took a deep breath, held it for a moment and then exhaled audibly. Half jokingly, half serious she mused, “We could also set the feathers or something on fire. That should engage the ship’s fire suppression system and shut down the holodeck. Hopefully before we run out of oxygen or burn to a crisp.” She glanced at Shon and then back at the communicator. After taking another deep breath she poked the needle where she hoped was the right place to either enhance the combadge or change it’s behaviour on such away that someone on the outside would detect it.

Shon barked out a laugh. “Actually not a bad-,” he stopped his thought abruptly and winced as Kiama moved to activate the comm badge, then looked up to the ceiling to immediately orient his attention to the world outside the holodeck.

Holding her breath for a moment while keeping the needle in place, Kiama glanced up at Shon and raised her eyebrows. She then said, “I have no idea if it worked or not and I’m not sure how we could find out.” Her expression deepened to a frown as she continued, “I don’t feel like trying anything more drastic right away. Yet sitting here waiting … I don’t really like that either.” While she tried to stay positive, the tension and frustration she felt started to creep ever so slightly into her voice.

While Kiama was talking, the ship’s computer had registered her attempt to temper with the combadge. And unbeknown to both of them, a monitor in a certain science lab lit up, showing that someone was trying something they weren’t supposed to.

The little ping did not escape the ears of the woman working diligently in Computer Science Lab 2. Pushing off from the one workstation, Faye glided towards the source of the ping and tapped a few keys before skimming the alert. Her brows rose. What were they doing in that particular holodeck anyway? Pulling up some other data, her brow furrowed deeper as she noted the strange energy readings that precipitating some sort of corruption of the programming. That was new. She could also see that the communications interface was trashed by whatever had erupted in the holodeck. Just great.

Grabbing a kit, Faye took off at a cautious dash, no wanting to waste anytime since there were definitely life signs in there, but she couldn’t get a solid read (which meant no beaming out). For someone to be fiddling with the communications subsystems, there had to be a significant reason and she had several guesses. None that boded well.

Reaching the holodeck, she attempted to open it, naturally, but unsurprisingly, nothing happened. She tried to use the comm directly, but no go. They were going to have to do this the hard way. =/\=Calloway to the Bridge and Engineering. I’ve detected a situation in Holodeck 1. Two lifesigns, but can’t get an ID. There was some sort of anomalous energy reading and things went crazy. Transporters are out, and comms are not working. I think I can get in through the back end, so I’m going to attempt it, but I don’t want to do that until I can get audio or visual inside, so I’m going to do that first.=/\= Safety first and all.

With Faye’s skills it was nothing for her to hack the program. Shutting it down just now was a terrible idea. But she could get in in a different way.

Ten minutes later, inside the holodeck, near Kiama and Shon, the air shimmered and a person materialized into being. It looked just like Faye Calloway, though it was clearly not her since the image just looked directly ahead and not at anything in particular. Kiama would sense that it was definitely not alive so likely a hologram. “I have no visuals yet, just audio, but this is Lieutenant Calloway. Someone is messing with stuff they shouldn’t. Who’s here and are you alright?” ‘Calloway’ said.

For a brief moment Kiama looked confused, but it didn’t take long for her to grasp what was going on. A sigh of relief escaped her lips and a wide smile spread across her face. “This is Lieutenant Naim. I’ve been fiddling with a combadge trying to get someone’s attention. I’m glad it worked.” She laughed softly, almost instantly followed by a sharp inhale. “Ensign Shon is with me. The holodeck started to malfunction and we couldn’t shut it down or contact anyone one the outside. And considering that we both have some scrapes and bruises the safeties are apparently down as well.” Kiama glanced briefly at Shon while she was down playing her own injuries. “That said, we’d be more than grateful for any help to get us out of here.”

“Yeah hi, this is Ensign Baht,” Shon interjected as he leaned in closer to the communicator. “Lieutenant Naim needs medical attention, more than I can give her without proper supplies,” he glanced at Kiama with a mildly annoyed look of ‘really?’ on his face. “Safeties are down AND the holodeck is generating random objects and structures, some of which have proven to be dangerous. We need to get out of here as soon as possible. We suspect the malfunctions may be caused by the radiation from the anomaly we’re approaching, and if that’s the case, other holodecks are likely affected as well.” Shon sat back on his haunches, staring at the hologram in anticipation.

Kiama gave Shon an apologetic look. She knew he was right, yet she was pretty certain that she wasn’t in mortal danger. So why worry anyone else?

There was a momentary pause as the Faye outside the holodeck took in the information. “I noticed the anomaly readings as well. Kind of interesting that it’s generating random objects. Can you use that to your advantage?” Faye asked. “I ask, because I’m currently working on bypassing some of the holodeck’s programming, and I want to know what the limits are,” she added as scrolled through the mess of code that now was the current program.

~Faye Calloway, Data Specialist

“We have been able to use a few of them to our advantage. We have a lot of pillows that have been somewhat helpful to protect us from flying and falling objects. As has the small shelter we’re currently sitting in. I also used a garbage can lid to ward off a swarm of flying needles that had appeared when I was searing for something fine and made of metal to manipulate the combadge.” Kiama paused for a brief moment, before mentioning the theory she had formed. “As the needles showed up when I needed something like a needle, I have been wondering if I or both of us, can influence what’s happening in here with our thoughts. We gave that hypothesis a try and concentrated on most needles disappearing and they did. Both things may be completely coincidental and so far I’ve been hesitant to give it another try.” Turning her head slightly, Kiama looked at Shon again and wondered if he wanted to add anything to her report.
