On a ship like the Manhattan William was not suprised to find that his duties were to begin immediately after his check in. He was to report to his office and get things in order to start crew evaluations. Some might have complained but William didn’t really mind. He had to get to know the crew and their dynamic at some point so he thought it was just as well to get things started. He walked down the hall humming a church hymn and nodding politely to passerbys and was once again made away that he stood out in Civilan clothes but he had gotten used to the staring long before now. he looked at the map and located the correct door and then used his ID to open the door.
“Oof!” William cried out as a pile of books immediately fell on him. Slowly he got himself up and wiped the dust off his clothes and out of his blonde wavey hair. Well he thought that was just brilliant he was going to have a nice bruise on his cheek now. William began to pick up all the papers and books and wondered if he had actually been given a supply closet instead of an office but concluded from all the books and notes it seemed his predecessor had been a bit of a hoarder and collector and hadn’t been allowed to bring all his things with him to their new post or back home. His family home often looked much the same, having an actress for a mother and an author for a father had the side effect of having rather large collections of items for sets for plays, and what not. After his shift, William thought he should contact his adoptive parents to let them know he had arrived alive and relativly unharmed.
After a few hours of work he had boxed up as much of the unusable things as he could such as old broken Padd’s and the like and books he wasn’t likely to use and sat down at his new desk at last. It didn’t quite look like his office yet but it was better than what it had been. After getting a hot black tea with cream and sugar from the replicator William turned on the consol to read the ship’s crew’ psychological evaluations which very few people were given privy to. As with any population it was very diverse with needs and he would need to pinpoint the ones who were most in need of his services first.

Something odd happened when the Counselor turned on the consol it flickered, then sparked and went dead.

It wasn’t long after that, mere minutes in fact, that the door to the Counselors room opened by itself and a man wearing Operations Yellow walked through and paused as he caught sight of the counselor, and the room that had been untl very recently very messy. He let out a low whistle and then moved forward, seemingly uninvited as was his entrance, placing what looked to be a tool kit on the desk and glancing at the flickering and dead console.

“You must be the new Counselor” the man said, and held out his hand. “Lieutenant Commander Max Wynter, Chief Engineer. Your early, I was expecting you to begin duty tomorrow. I see you discovered that the console has been busted, don’t worry, we will have it back up and running for you shortly.”

He opened his toolbox and glanced at the newcomer. “Civilian heh? You must have come highly recommended to get a post on a Federation vessel on long term assignment to the Delta Quadrant?”

Lt Cmdr Max Wynter
CE

William was relieved to see the Engineer who was just who he had been about to call. He looked forelorn at his lost console and clicked his tongue. “I am certainly glad to see you. This poor console needs some tender reviving,” William replied. When the man put his tools down and William offered him a hand to shake. “to be honest I think they just wanted to get rid of me,” William with a twinkle of amusment in his eyes. he glanced at the tools and took a breath.
“If you need a hand let me know, I know some basics in engineering so I can at least handed you the right tools,” William mused.

Max grinned and pulled the chair to the desk out, swinging one leg over the back before sitting down and taking out a selection of tools and laying them on the desk as if it was his own personal work space. For the moment, it was anyway. “It’s a long walk back home of they wanted to get rid of you, Doc” he said, seeming to do nothing and yet the cover of the console popped of, revealing a maze of isolinear chips and relays that ran the system. Taking another tool, Max began to poke it in random seeming places. “This shouldn’t take too long” he told the man, “a few fried circuits turned around, popped fuses pushed back in and a wave or two of some random device should see it working again in no time.”

William gave the man a grin, and handed the next took he asked for watching in amazement as the man seemed to reorder the entrie guts of the console without even hesitatiing. It was a second nature to him, and that told him a lot about the man.
“You feel the most ease when fixing things don’t you,” William said gently, “My uncle is the same way. He could never undersand my father who find the same solace in creating stories at his desk for hours,” he mused. He took the tool back from Max and then handed him the next one. “What do you like about fixing starships out in the middle of nowhere? It must be quite a challenge,” Williams asked, thinking he might as well get one psycheval done now. As he always tried to make them seems more of a convesation and not a session.
