(snip)

It took a bit of rigging which one of her guests was either going to applaud or threaten to throw her in the brig for. But as Faye surveyed her little makeshift oven, there was a distinct thread of pride that moved through her. It was a basic pizza oven. Enough to do a couple individual pizzas at a time, run with a power cell. So long as she watched things carefully it would work great. Not the same as open cooking or a stone oven, but hey beggars couldn’t be choosers and there was no way in hell she was going to do this in the mess hall, even if that strange man Harv would probably be okay with it. The last thing she needed for what was likely to be a really, terrible idea was a larger audience then she was about to have.

Her standard junior officer quarters were not exactly huge, and she had borrowed a table and two more chairs so they could eat somewhere reasonable, but Faye wasn’t one of heavily decorate. There was a small sofa and a coffee table tucked in one corner, and the rest of the living space consisted of her office space, which had involved a significant amount of tidying to look like she didn’t spend every waking moment working. At least the leafy potted plant in the corner and the wall shelf of seedlings under a grow light made the place look a little less austere.

Surveying the space, she nodded at the set-up, wth the pizza oven on a sturdy stand and an rolling ‘island’ providing prep space. The dough rested in a bowl, waiting to be rolled out and looked about right, though it had been ages since she had made it from scratch. She hadn’t finished getting all the toppings ready yet, but figured it was a good task after everyone arrived to keep her busy and her anxiety lower. At least somewhat under control?

Who was she kidding? She was going to be a ball of nerves no matter what. At least Faye’s default was to have no expectations, so at least if this blew up in a fury of flames (hopefully not actual flames), then she could at least know that she was no worse off than before.

Slipping into the bathroom, she quickly brushed out her dark brown hair, the teal having faded drastically. It was time to do something with it again, but for now, she left it loose, falling in soft waves.

She didn’t dress up per say. Faye knew how to, but this was supposed to be casual and so black slacks and a sheer black blouse over a thin strapped camisole suited her fine. It showed a bit of effort but wasn’t over-the-top.

Checking the time, it was nearly 1900 hours and she wasn’t sure how prompt anyone would be, but Faye set about tidying a final stack of padds to keep herself busy. Idle hands (or in her case, mind) and all that.

Hearing the chime, Faye was surprised and then chided herself. Of course Cochrane would be there on time or a tiny bit early. It fit the profile of the man to a T. She had really hoped that Jaz would get there first though in the hopes that she would feel less awkward, but on the other hand, she hadn’t had issues conversing with Alex on his own before, so it shouldn’t be any different tonight? Right?

With a slight sigh, Calloway moved to the door to let him in.

“Hi,” she said with a soft smile. “First one here, come on in.”

“Thanks. Sorry for being early. I knew I waited, something would come up and then I’d be late.” and he held out a bottle of wine to her. “Also didnt know what to bring, so I brought red. Seemed appropriate for pizza.” and he chuckled.

She smiled as she accepted the wine. “Works for me. And you’re not early, just perfectly punctual,” Faye said with a grin.

She had almost forgot about alcohol until Max’s message mentioned it. Calloway was so used to not indulging that for the most part she just continued on and never did. There used to be a stipulation in her file that she was not allowed any. Zero tolerance. But that was a long time ago (seemed longer) and the stipulation had been removed after the initial incident had shown no further issues. Nine years, she thought with some surprise. It really was a lifetime ago. And she had made it through her post-Tal Shiar recovery intact, so tonight she figured she could indulge mindfully. She’d be too nervous of acting poorly to let herself have much anyway.

Setting it down on the table, she turned to face him and gestured to the room. “I’d give you a tour but all you have to do is turn in a circle. Unless you care about seedlings,” she said with smirk.
