Okay, she could do this, right? It was just a casual invitation since she felt that things had gone in a very awkward direction since the incident in the jefferies tube. Ulterior motives aside, it was much easier for her to be social on a smaller scale and, well, she knew these three people. They weren’t strangers to her and were (mostly) well aware of the often ticking time-bomb that was Faye Calloway. So she sent the first message with a grin, thinking in the very least it would be sort of funny:
To: Lieutenant Commander Wynter, Maxwell and Lieutenant Wynter, Jasmine.
Re: Pizza Night
From Lieutenant Calloway, Faye.Okay, so it’s about time I paid up, right Max? I clearly owe you pizza even though it wasn’t my fault. Still I can admit when I’ve lost the bargain. And Jas, well, I can’t very well leave you out of the fun (or torture, depending on your point of view), now can I? I might invite another person as well, so we can evaluate my pizza making skills fairly.
Friday. 1900 Hours. My place.

She hit send and smirked. Okay, it was either trying to hard, or funny. She never could quite tell, but at least she had a reasonable expectation they would come. If not, well… this was going to be awkward.

Re: Pizza Night
From Lieutenant Calloway, Faye. So, long story short, Max Wynter and I had a bargain about my little installation project. Which I lost and now I owe him freshly made pizza. Lucky for him (and his wife), I actually can cook. It occurred to me as well that I owe you something for having a part of ship blow up even if it wasn’t actuallymy fault. Still, you’re more than welcome to join us. If you’re worried about food poisoning, don’t worry I’ve got a doctor on hand.
Friday. 1900 Hours. My place.

Her finger hovered over the screen and was about to erase it all and not bother. But she squeezed her eyes and told the computer to send it. It was gone, into the abyss of data. Too late to change her mind now. Well she could, but then they would all know she had chickened out.
Ah well, she’d been proven a fool before and the stakes on this evening were relatively low.

The comms remained quiet for a few moments, then a text-only reply came through.
=^= I’ll be there. Thanks for the invite.

Max had walked into his quarters, paused and looked around. Jasmine wasn’t back from her shift yet so he had time to shower and change, then relax slightly before settling in for the night. Dropping his tunic jacket over the back of the nearest dining table chair and kicking off his shoes, which he made sure went behind the sofa and not visible from the doorway he began to hum to himself a tune that he had in mind, it was a catchy tune from the latest in galactic rubbish reality-TV that he had promised Jasmine he would watch an episode of, and tonight was going to be the night when he would watch it and make her watch it with him. Something called The Gorn King, if he remembered right but really he didn’t care. What he really wanted was an excuse to sit down beside Jaz and put his arm around her.
Dropping his work belt on the coffee table as he passed it, Max headed for the shower. It wasn’t long later that he was out and dressed, and picked up one of the PaDD’s they had for personal use as he sat down on the sofa and put his feet on the coffee table, accidentally knocking his work belt off of it but deciding he would pick that up in a moment. Turning the PaDD on, he scanned the messages they had received. Skipping the ones from both his mother and Jasmines mother he followed the list down and though that he really, really needed to take both he and Jaz off the mailing lists for all these shopping and news network sites.
A message from Faye popped up and he skipped that too, he was off-duty after all. Then a message from Jasmine came into view and he smiled, touching the screen to go straight into it. I knew you would skip it, so now I know you’ve opened it, you can read it and reply for us was the subject line and Max raised an eyebrow as he scanned down the page, noting that Jasmine had simply forwarded him Faye’s message from above that he had skipped knowing he wouldn’t read it straight away.
“Oh you evil witch,” he muttered to himself. “That was sneaky, alright let’s see what she says.” Max read the message for a few moments and then looked up and out the window for a moment. Pizza and socializing or The Gorn King and a couch with Jasmine? Tough choice. Hitting reply, Max began to respond:
To: Lieutenant Calloway, Faye.
From Lieutenant Commander Wynter, Maxwell.
Hi Faye, thanks for the invite, Jaz and I are so pleased you invited us for pizza but we have to decline. We have a prior engagement with a video conference regarding some details of our marital contract that our mothers want to discuss. Something about kids being part of the deal or something, I forget. Anyway I would rather have pizza but according to Mintaran contract law article 4834 page 37 subsection 72d I have to attend or spend a week with her mother in a term we call Social Familiarization. It’s a term we Mintarans shudder at. Mainly the husbands for some reason.
Thank you for the invite though, lets try for another night.

Reading it again, Max nodded at an excuse well written and raised his hand to give a small flourish as he pressed send, but before his hand descended, the door to their quarters slid open with the announcing swoosh of fate. Max closed his eyes, maybe he could hit send before fate intervened.
