After Ensign Barvan arrived in the air lock, he immediately jetted towards the security complex aboard the USS Manhattan. As with any boarding procedure, the young security officer had to report to his new department head, and this was to be done at the department head’s office.

Walking briskly through the hallways of the ship, he eventually arrived at Lieutenant Drake’s office. Fixing his uniform, he then rang the chime, asking the be allowed in.

Ensign Barvan, Security

Eventually “Enter!” came the response. The office itself had a desk with an lcars terminal on it. Two big, comfy, yet empty, chairs was on one side towards the desk. On the other side of the desk was seated a middle-aged human male. He was working on his computer while drinking from a large mug of coffee.

“Can I help you?” He asked.

CoS

As the door opened, the chief of security would see a tall Betazoid male with a very thin build and dark hair.

“You can indeed sir. I am Ensign Barvan, the new security officer. I have been told to report to you as soon as possible.”

The young Betazoid would stand straight with his hands to his sides, as if, you know, reporting.

Ensign Barvan, Security

“Ah!” Logan exclaimed as he rose from his chair. “Welcome aboard! I’m Lt. Logan Drake. Please, at ease, and take a seat.”

Barvan would, as prompted, stand at ease and proceed to take a seat.

He returned to his own chair. He asked, “Are you finding your way around the ship? You’ll note that this security office, and our brig, aren’t in the specifications.”

CoS

“I asked around, mind you. And I am finding my way around the ship. Quite easy if you got an A- on the Boarding Actions course.”

Ensign Barvan, Security

“We’re a Heavy Researcher class ship,” Logan said. “Don’t expect to see any combat. But always expect to see combat.”

“For me, this is just a rest from the type of intense missions that I used to get into. You can expect a lot of foot patrols. Any red alert will see you on the bridge.”

CoS

“That’s precisely why I petitioned to join this ship, sir. The taste of adventure and exploring new places and doing some xenology is something I always dreamed of.”

Pause.

“Tell me sir, what are we looking at currently? What will I be doing after I leave this office and sort out my boarding evaluations?”

Ensign Barvan, Security

“For starters,” Logan replied, “… take a few days to tour the ship. Get to know some of the other crew.”

“After that, well, do you have any specialtied? Mine are sabatoge and recon. I’ve got a healthy dose of combat training as well.”

CoS

“My specialties are interrogation, telepathy, xenology, scouting and sniping. All of this is visible by the A- or above grades I got in those courses.”

Ensign Barvan, Security

“Excellent,” Logan said. “That helps to round out our department roster nicely enough. Tell me more about your telepathy. What are your limits?”

CoS

“Define limits,” Barvan would say, with a steely look.

OOC: As a reminder, Luke. All posts need to be in the third person past tense. In this case, ‘Barvan said’.

James

Ooc: Posts should look like you’re reading a book. ~mike

Ic:
“Oh, I’ve read reports where alien telepaths took over the minds of people from solar systems away,” Logan said. “They could make anyone do anything that they wanted them to do with extremely realistic illusions.”

CoS

“Oh, I am perfectly capable of inducing illusions and manipulating people in that same way from miles away. It’s a capital crime on Betazed to attempt to do this without proper authorization however and I have only done this as part of Federation intelligence operations. If you ever need that as a means of, you know, getting missions done, you, the CO and the XO have permission to do this via executive order.

Ensign maarvan, Security

Ooc: Wait, what? Hopefully, that’s joke. We aren’t allowed to play godlike characters here. This is why you won’t see us playing a Q or 7 of 9. I was referencing the Talosians.
~ mike

OOC: Telepaths can induce hallucinations from miles away without being as powerful as Q. This is well-established in canon, most notably to what the Reman side-kick to Shinzon did in Star Trek Nemesis. These aren’t god-like characters.

Luke P

OOC: Remans and Betazoids are significantly different species. Betazoid abilities are well documented :P

Nosy GM

Occ:
Plus. What we’re looking for in telepathic PC’s is more of your basic spock/tuvock/Deanna sort. There’s no reason that a beatzoid with Prof. X’s abilities would even be in Starfleet.
~mike

OOC: I strongly dispute that. There are plenty of reasons telepaths of my caliber might in Starfleet (HINT: intelligence work).

Luke P

OOC: But again, there’s no canon basis for such abilities existing in Betazoids. The only projection of emotion we ever saw was Lwaxanna Troi in DS9, but that was very limited distance, only with people she knew and the result of a viral infection that only older Betazoids are vulnerable to. There’s no canon basis for a Betazoid to possess the ability to manipulate peoples minds at will and/or at a great distance.

SGM

OOC: Void that then and just replace it with “very highly developed albeit limited to immediate surroundings”.

Luke P

OOC:
There was a highly developed beatzoid telepath in the tng ep Tin Man. But he was more equivalent here to a gm run NPC then a regular player character. We have club rules that specifically won’t let us play a godlike pc. That includes nerfed up skill monsters.

~ mike m again with silly autofill

OOC: Can we please get on with it? I just specified “highly developed telepath limited to one’s immediate surroundings” which excludes god-like characters.

Luke P

“Okay, that sounds like it’s useful to security services,” Logan agreed. “There will be a lot duty watch standing, however. During red alert, you’ll be on the bridge as well. Any questions?”

CoS

“What is my first assignment, sir?”
