The com beeped after he had returned from the day shift.=^= Doc Doctra to Captain Colter =^=
she waited for an acknowledgement.=^=Colter here. What can I do for you, Doctor?=^=
=^= Captain would you have some time to get your med eval out of the way? Either here or where you are now, your choice. =^= she said in what she hoped was a professional tone. She still couldn’t stop thinking about their awkward first meeting and when you fell off a horse, it was important to get right back on it.... which maybe wasn’t the best mental image to have in this situation.
Dr Doctra, CMO
=^=Where I am now? You do realize that I am currently in my quarters, doctor? I’m fine with that, as long as it doesn’t make YOU uncomfortable.=^=
Capt. Daniel ‘DaVinci’ Colter
CO-USS ManhattanWhat the… there were very few things that rubbed her the wrong way, and doubting her professionalism was one of them. But she was not alone in sickbay, she couldn’t snipe back at the captain. And maybe that was just as well.
=^= I will be there shortly! =^= she said through clenched teeth and stormed out of sickbay.
Ringing the chime she waited impatiently for the door to slide back. What would his private quarters look like? More antiques? She kind of hoped so.Dr Doctra, CMO
“Enter,” came the captain’s gravelly voice from inside. As the doors slid open, the doctor would see DavInci standing near a counter. placing empty dishes and dirty silverware into the recycle.
Offduty, he was dressed in a pair Wrangler denim jeans, slightly covering his bare feet. His torso was covered in a light blue, v-necked, tight fitting t-shirt, exposing every ripple of muscle underneath.
He took one final swallow of an amber liduid from the bottle in his hand.
She eyed him up and down as he was still busy and her feeling of annoyance quarrelled with an entirely different one suddenly and unexpectedly. But her prefrontal cortex caught up quickly and quelled that feeling.
Compared to his ready room, the captains quarters were very spartan with very few personal touches. There was one large framed picture of a mountain range hanging on the wall. The label underneath noted them as the Snowy Range. https://tranquiltrekker.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/IMG_3972-copy-768x1024.jpg
The door squished close behind her and she looked around, her eyes catching on the beautiful mountain scene.
“Dr, Doctra, welcome,” he began. “Before you say anything, i’d like to apologize for my . . . forwardness earlier. It was out of line, and unprofessional of me. Please accept my apology. I hope we can start over.”
Capt. Daniel ‘DaVinci’ Colter
CO-USS ManhattanAnd just like that the little speech she had worked on and her annoyance evaporated and left her empty. He’d done it again! Thrown her off her prepared scenario, behaving differently to what she had expected. Did he do that on purpose? And did she like or hate it? She quickly smiled and waved one hand.
„It’s ok, I just hadn’t been prepared for it. Certainly we can!“ she said in her deep timbre voice, her amber and her green eye searching his. She resolutely walked up to him and offered her hand.
„Hi.. ah… Dr … Lieutenant Valeria Doctra.“ she said, swallowing down the ‚ at your service‘ before it could make things awkward again. Why couldn’t she be smooth and eloquent even without preparation for crying out loud! And why did she offer her cold Trill hand that made non-Trill flinch in surprise?! But it was too late to pull back now.Dr Doctra, CMO
The captain stepped forward and took her hand firmly, but not so forceful as to impose a power move on his part. “Capt. Daniel Colter. Welcome to the Manhattan, doctor. Please have a seat anywhere. Can I get you something to drink? Coffee? Tea? A juice of some kind? Or something stronger, only if you’re off duty.” he replied with a smile/
Capt. Daniel ‘DaVinci’ Colter
CO-USS Manhattan“Thank you, but… I’m here for your med evaluation, remember?” she whipped out her med scanner, she had already read and memorised his med file.
“Your body is very interesting. You have anti-bodies for illnesses that have ceased to exist decades ago and your immune system is truly remarkable. Nevertheless, it may be a bit more vulnerable to alien stressors.” she said.“I am current on all my required immunizations, doctor. And honestly, I don’t think I’ve been sick for a single day since I’ve joined the fleet.”
He chuckled slightly. And those strange anti-bodies? Those were common when I was a child, in the 60’s and 70’s. Got them updated when I joined the Army in ‘84, and then again when I went to space in ‘96. . . 1996, that is. I’m in pretty good shape for a 400-year old, wouldn’t you agree.”
“Is there anything I should know about you in case I need to patch you up and you are unresponsive?” she asked? “Something not in your official file?”
Dr Doctra, CMO
“Not really, except there’s a buttload of scar tissue in various places. I got shot with a .45 in my right shoulder. Bullet went in the front and came straight out the back.”
she listened with avid fascination.
Colter pointed to his left thigh. “A sniper got me there. Would’ve gone right through my head if I hadn’t been knocked out of the way.”
Pointing to his left rib cage, he continued. “A slashing wound about 8 inches long there from a knife. That guy learned the lesson you don’t bring a knife to a gun fight.”
She ran the scanner along his body.
“And the right knee? Tons of scarring around there from numerous surgeries after blowing it out playing football in college. Finally got it fixed for good a few years back when I served on the Saracen. It’s as good as new now, thanks to this eras medical advances.
Capt. Daniel ‘DaVinci’ Colter
CO-USS ManhattanStudying the readout, her eyebrows drew together giving the trill spots at their edges a slightly new pattern. Engrossed in her work she seemed to become a different person, self-assured and earnest.
“Is there a reason you are keeping the dermal scar tissue out are you referring to subdermal scarring?” she asked since she didn’t want to ask him to take off his shirt.
Dr Doctra, CMO
“Reminders,” he said simply. “I keep them as reminders of things I’ve been through and how close I’ve come to losing some important things.” His gaze shifted to somewhere a long time ago and far away for a moment.
Bringing himself back to the moment, the CO continued. “And subdermal? Are you talking about scarring deeper in the tissue or the kind of scarring that goes on in the mind? Everybody has some of that. It just depends on how much. I choose to push mine down and far in back. In my career, I seen some pretty . . . grisly things, depraved, deplorable. It makes you wonder how some people can be so . . .evil.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to bring the mood down or make you feel like a counselor. You’re here for my physical. What’s next?”
Capt. Daniel ‘DaVinci’ Colter
CO-USS ManhattanFor the first time her green and her amber eye held his for more than three seconds as she considered his words. They spoke of so much experience, so much time passed, so many things to unravel… and no counsellor would be able to do that. Some things could only be said to someone who understood… truly understood from experience. If she were joined…
no. she couldn’t go there, it was too hurtful. The rejection due to her blasted eyes was still as fresh as if it had happened yesterday. She schooled her features, but a shadow did cross her expression shortly.„No need to be sorry, I’m sorry that I can’t begin to understand what you went through. I spoke of the scar tissue below the skin. Some of those wounds went deep and you must feel the pull or stretch when you move. I could remove at least that subdermal scarring, I think you would regain a bit more flexibility then.” she said, still gazing up into his rather unique face.
Dr Doctra, CMO
OOC: Once you have time and would like to, you can ask a report of the new personnel from your CIO. He then has to tell you of his Intel mission in regards to Val and the symbiont, his orders include letting you know… even before we play out that side sim :-)
Dr Doctra, CMO
OOC: Got it!
IC: “I guess I never considered getting the underneath damage taken care of. In my time that that’s what rehab and physical therapy was for. Figured that pain was just a part of getting older. . . but if that’ll help with movement and flexibility, please, go ahead.”
He flexed his right arm and shoulder causing the sleeve to become even tighter around his upper body. “So, I should be able to throw a football a good 75-80 yards after this,” he joked.
Capt. Daniel ‘DaVinci’ Colter
CO-USS Manhattan
She nodded. „Great. But I’ll need you in sickbay for that. Also… what is a football?“ she asked.
