Not long after being cleared by the counsellor , Marcus had one thing left to do, report to the XO

He did a quick check of his uniform. pressed the door chime when he was satisfied his clothews were looking tip top and waited for the XO to give permission to enter.

“Enter” Celador said.

The office looked like it was still in the process of being moved in. There were a couple boxes stacked, an empty bookshelf and the walls were bare. A desk was towards the right of the room, with two chairs directly on the opposite side. On the other side was a small couch

Celador looked up from some his desk. “Morning Lieutenant.” Celador greeted.

With that Marcus entered the room, stood an appropiate distance from the XO and stopped

“Morning Commander , I’m just reporting for duty , all my other boarding stuff has been done, I haven’t even seen my quarters yet , the XO would notice he had a kit bag over his right shoulder

“Relax, you must be the Chief Intelligence officer.” Cel states in observation. “I only found my office a few hours ago. Ever get the feeling like you are being rushed?” I ask simply sitting down in my chair and gesturing you to pick on opposite.

“To be honest Sir, I kind of like it”

Marcus said taking the seat the XO gestered

Celador sits down opposite and studies the man across from him for a moment.

“Tell me about yourself, not the official version, something that I can’t read in your file?” He asks curiously.

Marcus was quiet for a moment, considering the question. It was an interesting distinction—the official version of himself was something he could recite almost without thinking. His service record, qualifications, assignments, commendations. All facts, neatly organised and easily accessible.

The man behind those facts was somewhat harder to summarise.

“That’s a more difficult question than it sounds, Commander.”

A faint smile touched his expression.

“I suppose the first thing you wouldn’t find in my file is that I’m actually rather fond of quiet places. Libraries, observation lounges, anywhere I can sit without someone expecting me to say something.”

He relaxed slightly in the chair.

“I spend a fair amount of my free time reading. History mostly, particularly accounts of how cultures change and how seemingly small decisions can have consequences decades later. Probably explains why I ended up in Intelligence more than I’d care to admit.”

There was a hint of amusement in his voice.

“I also enjoy cooking. Properly cooking, rather than asking a replicator to produce something that looks like food. I find the process strangely therapeutic. There’s something satisfying about taking a collection of unrelated ingredients and turning them into something coherent.”

Marcus paused, then regarded Celador thoughtfully.

“I’m probably more sociable than my profession makes me appear. I don’t mind company. I just don’t feel the need to fill every silence.”

His expression became slightly more reflective.

“And perhaps the most important thing you wouldn’t find in my file is that I don’t particularly enjoy being the most interesting person in the room. I’d rather understand the people around me. You learn considerably more that way.”

He gave a small shrug.

“That’s probably enough about me to make the official version slightly less boring.”
