Ruki sat in Event Horizon Station, his belongings close at hand, dozing as he waited for his transport to the Manhattan. He came by way of the Romulan Free State where Kael was assisting in the rebuilding efforts, using his engineering skills. Ruki had limited skills in engineering, but he did have a pair of hands and could carry things and move things as instructed by his younger brother. Kael and Ruki had a strong relationship, despite Noel’s (Kael’s twin) death. Ruki had rushed to get here in time, and now he was tired. He rested his eyes and dreamed as he waited.

11 year old Ruki watched as his younger brothers played. He knew what would happen, but he powerless to stop it. The structure toppled, and he was impossibly slow, watching in horror … he ran in, pulled the closest one out, tried to get the other one, but the equipment fell directly on top of 8 year old Noel. The date was 25th December 2381. There was no chance. He was only 11 but he was too young and too short and not brave enough … never again would that happen.

He woke with a start. He looked around, his heart racing, he was safe, he was 31. No one would die on his watch again. He dozed off again.

21 year old Ruki was at the Academy, Security, on the USS Newcastle, they were providing a security detail for a Klingon/Cardassian summit, overseen by a Federation team of Diplomats. There were reports that ‘True Way Extremists’ would strike, but the intelligence was judged not credible enough. Until suddenly they were there and the cadets were being told to stay put. Ruki though … didn’t. The explosives set off by the extremists went dangerously close to killing the Federation Ambassador, T’Lara and her retinue. Ruki moved. He may not have been able to save his brother, but he could the Ambassador and her retinue. Ignoring the orders of his CoS, Ruki ran towards the explosions, the collapsing tunnels, the Ambassador and her retinue, no one would die on his watch. He dodged a phaser blast, and shot back, a direct hit. Behind him his CoS and fellow cadets watched, seeing Ruki running directly into the line of fire wasn’t unusual, it was still a bit unexpected, but not unusual, and they could see … they’d have to do something, or it could be the loss of an ambassador, her retinue and a promising Cadet. They lay down covering fire, and Ruki reached his target, a localised force-field generator. He tapped the needed commands. and the destabilised ceiling of the cave became stabilised. Ambassador T’Lara and her retinue survived that day with nothing more than minor scrapes and bruises. Ruki was the last one out, he was spat out by his CoS, for his reckless antics, his apparent deathwish and for being a madman, but he was also awarded a Pike Medal for his bravery and the lives he saved. It was 28th April … his brothers would have both been 18.

Again, he woke. He looked at the Pike Medal on his dress uniform … he didn’t do it for the medals, but they were nice. Once again, he dozed …

He was CoS and leader of the away team, taking action against Orion Pirates. He knew the protocols, but he also knew what happened when he didn’t take action. So, he took action. He knew the consequences of failure, he also knew the consequences of success. And the successful mission. He issued the orders, they were to clear the airlock and then beam aboard. He disregarded standard protocols He endangered the mission. But he saved the lives of his away team. Before the airlock was cleared, he beamed directly aboard the Orion vessel and disarmed their self-destruct sequence … alone … and in clear violation of Starfleet protocols and operating procedures. He was spat out by his CO and XO for endangering the mission, and his own life. However, he was also praised for saving the lives of his team and for ensuring the evidence against the pirates was collected. The reprimand remained on his permanent record, the praise … did not. It was 14th December … his brothers would have been 26.

He woke again as his combadge buzzed. =/\= Lieutenant Ruki Jowa, report to docking port Epsilon. Your transport is due to depart. =/\=

Ruki rose, put his duffel bag over his shoulder, and dragged his larger bag behind him. The Manhattan was waiting for him. He reached the assigned docking port, and boarded the crew transport. His next adventure awaited.

Lieutenant Ruki Jowa
Chief of Security USS Manhattan

The crew transport was quick, and he reached the vessel without too much problem. He handed over his transfer orders, dropped his belongings in his quarters on Deck 4. He checked his uniform, before heading out to his office to check on the details of his team.
