Her smile lit up her eyes. “Oh, I’m just writing notes about things I want to share with my mother and brother back home. The rest is just brainstorming.” She gestured with a graceful flick of her hand t the table. “Please feel free to join me, John.” He had given his first name, so she gladly used it.~Ensign Ka’Sora
Bump
Striker took a seat… This was the first time he’d actually felt relaxed since his arrival.
“What’s home like for you, do you get back much?”
Striker sipped the root beer and placed the glass cup down carefully.
- Ensign Striker
“That is a big question, but the second part is easier to answer. In short, no, trips home will be exceptionally rare from here on out. I had the fortune of being home for two months after my graduation from the Academy and it was very much needed. But while I was at the academy, I did not have the opportunity to visit. My planet, Zahara, is a long ways from Earth and even farther from where the wormhole opens in the Alpha Quadrant.” Ka’Sora could have kept going but wanted to see what he made of that first.
~Ensign Ka’Sora
Striker nodded slowly taking in the science officer’s words.
“That’s pretty far out.... So what made you choose this side of the wormhole?”
It suddenly dawned on Striker that given the opportunity to explore a whole whole new quadrant within an organisation such as Starfleet would appeal to him too.
- Ensign Striker
Her voice held a musical tone as she laughed. “Choose? I didn’t. I just graduated from the Academy and I don’t know many new ensigns who get to choose their first official assignment. However, I am a sociologist and the only Zaharan in Starfleet. I decided to apply to the Academy because my people are at a critical juncture of our development and I am a part of a large group of us that believe that putting ourselves out into the galaxy and not only learning about others, but teaching others about ourselves, is one of the key ways we can grow as a people. Being assigned to the Manhattan is a dream and I think they did so because my background and my research interests align very well with the ship’s mission in the Delta Quadrant.”
~Ensign Ka’Sora
Striker nodded and considered her response before smiling.
“No doubt they did, sounds like we’ve got an excellent Science on board.”
She gave him a lopsided smirk.
Striker considered why he’d joined Starfleet.... He didn’t really have anything inspirational to say. His mother was a retired Starfleet officer & his father had been a Starship Captain.
“I guess I only really joined up because that’s what my family has always done.... I thought I’d get assigned to a Starbase so was also pleasantly surprised to get Manhattan.”
“Was it expected then?” Ka’Sora asked.
He suddenly became very aware of the throbbing bruise on the side of his face. He pressed the cold root beer glass to it gently.
“I was starting to miss my old buddies til this holodeck prank.”
Striker stifled a laugh before draining the last of the root beer.
- Ensign Striker
“A prank is a mischievous act, yes? I’m practicing my Federation Standard and sometimes the translations aren’t so direct.”
“May I ask what the prank was?” the Zaharan said, leaning forward slightly.
~Ensign Ka’Sora
Striker grinned.
“Oh yes it’s a mischievous act alright.”
Striker adjusted his martial arts belt.
“I have a specific holodeck martial arts program that I use to keep my skills up… Just a series of drills and light sparing.”
He shook his head and and let out a laugh that seemed to light his whole face up.
“My friend thought it would be funny to change this out so that my sparing partners were master trained in Klingon martial arts… I didn’t know what was happening until one of the holograms started speaking in my friends voice. I guess I owe him one now.”
Striker smiled.
“For the record your Federation standard is perfect “
- Ensign Striker
She grinned. “Thank you. I’ve had four years of practice, but I’ve only recently tried going without the universal translator where I can.”
The Zaharan tilted her head and eyed him curiously. “You came in really angry and now you are smiling. Have you forgiven your friend for the joke?”
~Ensign Ka’Sora
Striker laughed and nodded.
“Sometimes I take myself way too seriously, that’s why my friends keep doing things like this…”
Striker leaned forwards as if to comically pretend to share a secret.
”....Besides I just remembered, it’s my turn to get him next!”
Striker looked down at his attire.
“You know I’ve always found these gi to be less comfortable than the uniform? Plus a big white target makes for an easier kill than the black and gold.”
Striker’s eyes widened.
“You know way back when my great grandmother was in Starfleet Security wore bright red shirts? They may as well have painted a bullseye on them and put a flashing light on their heads!”
