Ka’Sora wasn’t fussed with having to carry a weapon, but phasers would never be her first choice. Until she learned more about this culture, she wouldn’t know if her preference in weapon was a suitable option or not.

“Hopefully not, Nightroad,but make sure it’s still easily accessible, to you . . . . just in case,”the Intel Chief replied.

Sebastian watched the others file out of sickbay and waited for Ka’Sora. As she approached, he asked, “Mind you if I join you on the way to get the equipment? Perhaps we can continue our conversation about human idioms, like. . . . ‘your mother wears combat boots’, or ‘let’s call it a day’ . . . “

She had taken a moment to feel the (presumably( shorter pointed ears and marvel at how weird it felt and how she would have to adjust her micro-behaviours so as to not give away that her ears had more movement than the others’ did. Her hair was no longer green but she’d have to take a good look in a mirror to see the changes.

Fingers tracing along her ears, she looked up at Sebastian. “Hmmm? Oh, yes, of course.” She blinked her now brown eyes. “Combat boots?” She frowned as they walked out of Sickbay. Her brain was trying to figure out a logical alternate meaning to the phrase but she wasn’t coming up with much.

Sebastian grinned, happy to be in this conversation with Ka’Sora. “it’s meant as an insult, and goes back to 20th century Earth, specifically the 1940’s. At the time of World War II.”

“It’s like this, During the war, soldiers would often be away from their wives, or mates, for extended periods of time and to release pent up tensions, sexual urges, they would often visit woman that would help satisfy theses urges, most often for some kind of payment. There were major shortages of food, clothing, daily personal items, such as shoes. You with me so far?’

Ka’Sora nodded. “Yes.” She knew enough about other societies to follow the context of the situation, even if it just wasn’t like that on Zahara.

“In this instance the soldiers would sometimes give their combat boots as payment to these women. Hence, the phrase ‘your mother wears combat boots’ was to infer that someone’s mother was one of these ladies, and these ladies were not looked upon very highly by society, therefore the insult. Does that make sens?”

“I can extrapolate, yes,” she said with a slight smirk. “It’s fascinating to me though, because we never had such a scenario on my world. We understand needs very well, and it’s not a shameful thing to ask for help having them met.”
