Cochrane reached in and brought out the requested items. “If you don’t know what your tools can do and how they work, how are you supposed to use them properly?” and he handed her the two items. “Besides, ship’s systems do a lot more than people think, and can be used in ways that most don’t realize. Like on my last ship. We got boarded by some reptilian-types. I used the fire suppression system to knock them out. Cold on lizards equals hibernation.”

Faye nodded appreciatively. “Very nice there, Cochrane. I approve of your methods,” she said with feigned imperiousness.

After opening took the L-shaped pice of metal, which actually had little tiny connector spaces along one side. She flipped open the lid of the small heavy box he had brought out. Inside was filled with heavy little pieces of metal that resembled a nut but had a small prong that was threaded. Faye handed him the L-shaped part. “It’s so funny. People living on starships are so used to the high tech parts of our lives that they forget all the little physical bits that have to be put together to make it all work.”

“I need you to fit and screw in one of those connectors into each of the fifteen holes,” Faye said with an apologetic grin. “Bet this isn’t what you imagine you’d be doing tonight.”
