There was an earnestness in the way he spoke that assured her he truly meant what he said. It wasn’t just some spiel a CO might give to someone to placate a difficult crew member (which she had definitely experienced before). Faye took a moment to study his face, and it’s particular angles and the way his eyes held a certain intensity. Yes, under the right circumstances he could be intimidating if he chose to, but here that intensity was entirely out of a need to protect his ship and crew and lead them the best he could. Well, if nothing else, she would have some interesting notes after this encounter. But regardless, her response was also incredibly sincere. “You have my word.”

Inhaling and then forcibly exhaling, she sat up a bit. “Which… means I will tell you this much: yes, there are things you aren’t allowed to know… right now. But that will change and when it does, I promise you you will know everything. Some thing at that point might still remain need-to-know, but you will know everything there is to know.”

Cochrane remained still and silent for a moment, and then simply said “Good enough for me.” and he looked around. Changing the subject, he said in a manner that seemed as if the intense and important conversation they just had had never happened. “Need a hand with anything? I’m rubbish at electronics, but I follow direction well.” and he laughed a bit.

There was tiny bit of relief on her face as she nodded slightly. “There’s a couple small things, and then I just really need to finishing packing stuff away. And your help might mean I might get to go to bed sometimes before 0100,” she said with a grin.

Swivelling her chair, Faye pushed herself to her feet and moved the chair out of the way. She looked over the three small crates she had brought in and pointed to the smallest one. “If you don’t mind bringing that small one closest to us over, I can get us to finish hooking up our… metaphorical hypospray,” she said, grin still on her face.

“You got it, Boss.” and he stood up and once again removed his uniform shirt. Moving over to the indicated crate he lowered himself and, lifting with his legs, picked up the crate and brought it over. Setting it next to her open panel, he said “Is the patient ready, Doctor?” with a grin on his face.

“Almost,” Faye said matter-of-factly as she turned to the crate. Entering a key-code combination, the locks released and she removed the lid. Inside was an assortment of parts and nothing stood out as particularly special. But that wasn’t the point. She needed all these pieces together in order to create the network.

Reaching in, she grabbed a small box, and without even really thinking about it, Faye began to pull out small components and fit them together. “Ahh, grab the long L-shaped metal thing inside there for me, as well as a small blue box. Just be careful with the box, it’s a lot heavier than it looks.”

“So… not electronics, but you know your way around the systems. I know that captain do actually know stuff about their ships, but you have a better grasp than I was expecting,” Calloway said as she worked.

Cochrane reached in and brought out the requested items. “If you don’t know what your tools can do and how they work, how are you supposed to use them properly?” and he handed her the two items. “Besides, ship’s systems do a lot more than people think, and can be used in ways that most don’t realize. Like on my last ship. We got boarded by some reptilian-types. I used the fire suppression system to knock them out. Cold on lizards equals hibernation.”
