After handling her physical, Ka’sora made her way over to the Counsellor’s office. This was perhaps one of the conversations she was most interested to have, given their expertise were not so far apart. They both studied the behaviour of people, but for different reasons and outcomes. And as she had learned in her two years at the Academy, Ka’sora knew it was important to have someone to talk to about whatever might come up in the coming weeks and months. She already anticipated some homesickness and was ready for it to appear, but for now she just wanted to get to know people, and the ship, and experience all she could.

Reaching the office, she pressed the chime, her ears tilting forward in anticipation.

Akane looked up from the padd she was reading and smiled. “Come in!” She called out as put her paperwork to one side and stood to greet her guest.

Ka’sora moved in with smooth, intentional strides, taking in every detail. Of course, her gold eyes immediately found the tiny tree.

Although she still hadn’t fully unpacked, Akane had tried to make her office inviting. A plush sofa sat off to the side with a comforting turquoise blanket draped over it for a pop of colour. There was a large bookcase with a multitude of old books and magazines with a beautifully delicate bonsai tree taking pride of place in the centre of the middle shelf. It was a gentle reminder of home for Akane, and a love she shared with her father for traditional Japanese craftsmanship. There was what appeared to be a family picture sat on the counselor’s desk along with several curiosities she had picked up on her travels.

Opposite the desk were two comfortable violet coloured chairs with crushed velvet seats. Everything in the office was designed to be as inviting as possible. On a small side table there was a delicious looking array of cakes with a handful of side plates and napkins laid out ready for people to partake.

She smiled warmly as the doors slid open to reveal a new face. “Welcome Ensign, please do come in,” she said as she gestured to the empty seats opposite her desk. “Can I interest you in something to drink, or perhaps a slice of cake?” She added with a wink.

Her ears flicked in Sakai’s direction and she grinned. “I’ll never say no to sweets! And water would be really nice. I forget how dry the air is on a ship,” she said, moving to one of the chairs. She sat, automatically crossing her legs with one atop the other. “You have a cozy workspace,” glancing once more at the tiny tree and resisted the impulse to jump back up and investigate.

Akane grinned, appreciating a fellow sweet tooth. She sauntered over to the dessert array and cut a large slice of cake for each of them before walking over to the replicator and ordering a water and a green tea. “Thank you Ensign,” she replied as she popped the cake and water in front of her guest and noticed Ka’Sora peering at the bonsai tree. She smiled and plucked it off the shelf, popping it down on the desk. “It’s called a bonsai tree, it’s a traditional Japanese art form that my father taught me,” she said proudly, smiling at the memory of herself watching her father painstakingly prune and shape the delicate trees in their greenhouse.

Oh, she was so going to investigate the tree later! “I’ve never seen such a tiny tree!” she said, her gold eyes alight. “Back home, well, ours are very tall.” they had to be in order to live up in the canopy.

“So how are you settling in?” Akane asked as she popped a piece of cake in her mouth.

She wobbled her head back and forth as she scraped a bit of the icing from the cake with her index finger and popped it in her mouth. She beamed in delight. “I haven’t been here very long and only just started doing the rounds for my check-ins, but so far I’m very grateful for the accommodations to my dwelling. I think it’s going to work out well. I still will find it hard to live alone, but I managed at the Academy and on my cadet cruise, so I know I will here too, even if long-term I know it will be lonely.”

Akane smiled and studied Ka’Sora with interest. It was always exciting to meet a new species and she was always fascinated to learn about new cultures. “Well I’m sure you’ll make friends quickly. I’m new here myself as well but everyone seems very friendly, and my door is always open if you start to feel isolated.” She added with a warm smile.

Taking another bite of cake, she sat back in her chair and crossed her legs. “So tell me Ensign, what made you choose star-fleet? I don’t know of many Zaharans in the fleet, in fact I haven’t met any of your species before.” She admitted as she took a long slurp of her tea.
