The NEs; (A recurring cast!!)
Nohl - Trill, They/Them - Programming/Computer Science
Johnson - Human, He/Him - Warp Physics and Impulse Propulsion
Grant - Human, She/Her - Electrical Engineering
T’raath - Vulcan, He/Him - Warp Physics and Stellar Cartography

The regular crew stood at their stations in engineering, chit-chatting about this and that while they did their work. NEs Johnson, T’raath, Grant, and Nohl had been working as a team for several years now, and had a sense of camaraderie. Well, most of them did. T’raath, being from Vulcan, would refute such claims of friendship. The fifth chair in the ‘team’ had felt empty for quite a while since Kaia’s promotion, but Nohl had heard through the grapevine that they were getting a new member of the Engineering team, and was hopeful the new ensign would mesh well with the rest of them.

Able was relieved that the Captain and XO were approachable; now he would see if the Chief Engineer was the same. As Able walked into the Engineering Department, he glanced around and noticed the Chief Engineer. Walking up to her, he said, “Ma’am, Ensign Nightroad reporting.” and handed her the PADD he was holding.

Kaia wasn’t in engineering, so Able instead walked up to NE Grant (who was a Lt. jg). Grant looked at the PaDD in confusion for a moment, then grinned. “What’s this?” she asked, reaching out to take the device. She looked at its contents for a few moments, then looked up. “Ah! New arrival! We love those. I think you’re looking for the Chief, I’m… not her. I’m LT Junior Grade Leah Grant, and this is the engineering ops team. That’s Ensign T’Raath, Ensign Lee Johnson, and Ensign Kay Nohl.” She gestured to each in turn.

Johnson stepped over, giving Nightroad a hearty slap on the shoulder. “Welcome to the team, kid! Word of advice, the Chief hates being called Ma’am. Just stick with Leftenant, Sir, or Chief.”

Able looked at Lieutenant and said “Thank you for the advice.” Able felt a little out of place for mistaking the Chief Engineer. Able thought for a moment and asked, “Do you know when the Chief will be back?”

“No clue, but I can comm her,” Grant replied, tapping her commbadge. “Grant to Lt. Kaia.”

“Hey, Boss. New Ensign in main engineering, here for his check-in.”

“So, what brings you all the way to the Delta Quadrant?” Grant turned to Able, while everyone else got back to whatever they were working on.

Able had been asked that question many times today and each answer a little different but he knew the main reason and replied, “I just wanted to get away and start fresh somewhere.”

Nightroad, Engineer

“Eh, aren’t we all,” Grant chuckled.

She turned back to her station, and the sounds of a busy Engineering surrounded them for a few minutes while they waited.

After not too long, the door to engineering swooshed open, and a bipedal cat dressed in an engineering uniform stepped through the doors, looking around with a smile. She walked over to join Able. “You must be Ensign Able Nightroad!” She elbowed the console, and a small shelf at about waist-level flipped out of the wall. With a simple leap, she was standing on the small shelf, now much closer to eye-level with the human ensign. “I am glad you made it safely. I am Lt Kaia, I am in charge around here. Welcome to Engineering.”

“Thank you Ma’am, I’m happy to be here.” Able replied.

Nightroad, Engineer

There was a long silence as the group of NEs stared at Able, and Lt. Kaia took a deep breath. “Never call me Ma’am, Ensign,” she said, all joviality gone from her countenance. There were a few moments of silence before one of the NE’s coughed. “Anyways. Would you like to start your first shift now, or do you need to settle in? We can send the duty roster to the console in your quarters.”

“No, I’m ready to go.” Able responded, “And I apologize profusely for forgetting the formalities right after I was told. Able felt horrible and was only the first day.
