“Ok, let’s see what we’ve got,” said Ben. “Computer, scan specimen…” he glanced down at the autopsy identification number that had been generated. “… 267”. He hoped that was a random number rather than a count of the number of dead bodies the ship had seen.

A thin beam like a sheet appeared over the bed and slowly moved down and back up the body several times. Data flowed quickly as did a 3D composite of the body that formed above it and hovered there. On the display at the head of the bed there was a 2D sketch with red areas highlighted.

“Identify species and likely cause of death”.

=^= Species. Human. Male. Condition dwarfism of the order of achondroplasia. Approximate age 45. Cause of death uncertain. Blunt force trauma registered to his neurocranium and left shoulder noted. Cellular disruption equivalent to decompression to space. Both injuries occurred within a close time frame and either may have been the primary cause of his death. =^=

Ben considered the results for a moment. The injuries seemed consistent with explosive decompression: the physical damage from hitting the bulkheads as atmosphere was vented; the cellular disruption from the difference in pressure.

=^= Computer, are you able to quantum date the individual? =^= he asked. In theory, the quantum date of the cells should have stayed the same since they were exposed to space, and certain types of cells in the body have a shorter life.

The comms activated and the voice of the Commanding Officer came through. =/\= So, Doctor… any new information from our guest? =/\= he asked.

Ben inwardly rolled his eyes; the body had only been in sickbay for a couple of minutes, and already the CO was after an update. ‘He must be twiddling his thumbs up there’, Ben thought to himself, before tapping his comm badge.

=^= Hudson here; it looks like the individual was killed by an explosive decompression on the ship he was on. That’s all I can tell you at the moment. =^=

The computer worked through several more such scans. Here and there were brighter spots of blue in the scan as it focused here and there. =^= Subject was deceased at approximately fifty standard earth years. Rate of quantum decay and secondary indicatives place the time of death at approximately one hundred forty standard years. =^=

Ben tapped his comm badge again.

=^= Hudson to Bridge and Away Team. The deceased individual was a 50 year old human, but time of death was around 140 years ago. =^= he reported, wondering what had caused the individual to be in the Delta quadrant at a time when humanity was just starting to explore solar systems local to Earth.

It was at that point that Anna entered the autopsy room, staying just clear of the forcefield. “I was on the Bridge dealing with someone’s minor injury when I heard there was a body being beamed to Sickbay, sir. Are you planning to do just scans, or a full physical autopsy? In the latter case, permission to observe? It’s been a while.”
