The little boy looked rather miffed as he gazed at Shedda very seriously and said, “Pick up my toys. I rather play.”

“We’re working on it,” Kel said, chuckling softly.

“Oh I would rather play too! It’s no fun when we have to stop.” She dropped her voice to a stage whisper and looked at him seriously, “My father made me pick up my toys too. We would play a game to race and see who could pick up more toys. He is a BIG guy with even bigger hands, so he could pick up big toys with one hand. Those big toys only counted as one though. I was small and could reach things in small places so I always got more toys and would win. I bet if you work hard at it, you could win that race too.”

The boy just gave a lopsided smile and chewed on some of his dinner.

“What do you think of this ship? Do you like it? Do you hate it?”

Sair was curious herself. She knew he seemed fine in his interactions, that he felt safe and loved with her and her mother here, but she also didn’t know what he would say.

Like all small children, Koro was exceedingly honest. “It’s big. A little scary. But it has a pond too!” he said, a little wide eyed. “I like the stars when they fly.”

Kel grinned and exchanged a glance with Sair and a small nod as if to say, He’ll be fine.

Shedda grinned at his honesty and wonder. “It does have a pond. I haven’t visited it yet. The ship is big, but when you are ready, with your mom’s permission, I can show you how not to be so worried the ship is big.”

“Okay,” Koro said simply.

Sair nodded. It was nice that Shedda wanted to spend time with Koro. He needed to get used to others being more prominently in his life, especially with her mother leaving soon.

“If you would like to show him the stars flying, next time we go to warp from stationary, take him to the forward lounge to watch out the windows. It’s quite the sight. I never get tired of it.”

“That’s a great idea!” Sair said, smiling at Koro. “That could be a fun outing, don’t you think?” she asked him. Koro beamed and nodded. “I’m done, mama,” he said. Sair eyed his plate and nodded, leaning over to kiss the top of his head. “Go one then, play a little before bath time?”

Koro nodded and clambered down from his special chair while Sair held on securely to the back.

Sair gazed at Shedda. “What do you think? Have an hour to spend with him tomorrow? He’d love to see more of the ship I’m sure but he’ll run you about the garden space though, just warning you,” Sair said with a laugh.

Shedda leaned back in her seat, her gaze focused on the middle distance for a moment. “How about the day after? I have all those individual conversations tomorrow, and I would hate to have to cancel if they run over. The next day is technically my day off, so I can give him all the time he wants. He won’t have to rush.”

“That works for me,” Sair said with a smile before scooping up the last of her yualra. “I’m sure he will enjoy his time.” But Sair knew also that it was good practice for Shedda while she awaited things to unfold with her adoption. She watched as Koro went back to building things with his blocks and knew it would be good for him to bond with other people as well.

“How are you with food or drinks with a mild spice?” Kel asked.
