Cochrane’s eyes lit up as he spoke about his sister. “My sister? She is a Science Officer in Star Fleet. Lieutenant Commander Racheal Cochrane. And I can tell you that she was so mad when I was named Captain of the Manhattan. All good-natured mad, of course. We have always been close, my sister and I. We have an older brother as well, but he tends to do his own thing. He is an Engineer. Star Ship designer for Utopia Planitia Shipyards. And we also have a step-sister, Stova. She is closer to Racheal, but we all get along really well. In fact, Racheal and my mother… well, technically my step-mother but I consider her my mine… were just here a few months ago for the wedding I told you about.”

“It must have been so lovely to spend some time with them. Do you get to see them often?” Said asked before she ate some more of the chowder.

Meanwhile, Kel was eating quietly, enjoying the dish (much to her surprise) and just taking in the conversation.

Cochrane shook his head. “No, not often. Even when I was stationed closer, the duties of commanding a start ship take up a great deal of time. Add to that the distance now separating us and the time it takes to get anywhere we could meet? I think that was the last time I will get to see them in person for some time.” and he snorted softly in slight derision at the situation. “I haven’t been home to Vulcan in over five years, now that I think about it.”

“What is it like there? It’s a hot planet, if I remember correctly from something I head someone say,” Kel said. “Though I could be easily confusing it.” There were a lot of Federation member worlds, after all.

“It is.” Cochrane said. “Arid and hot. It is mostly desert and mountain ranges. It is harsh… but very, very beautiful. My sister and I were really nervous when we moved there, but now? Now its home.”

Sair chewed on some bread, not allowing her mind to traipse down the path of measuring time. Not not. Maybe later, but not now.

Cochrane looked at Sair and said “What about your homeworld? What is it like?”

A small smile touched Sair’s face. “I would describe our world as beautiful as well. It’s divided into four continents and one large archipelago. The biomes vary depending on a lot of factors, such as position near the equator or polar regions and ocean currents, just like Earth and many other worlds. Our capital of Sonrey is located on Allaro and contains mountain ranges, temperate rainforest and scrub deserts. One of the good things to come out of the whole mess with the Amray is that we become hyperaware of our environment and trying to reduce our impact as much as possible, because at least initially most of our deuridium supply came from specific regions. Once we reached a point where we needed more than our world could provide, a moratorium was placed on extraction from specific areas.”

“Sair’s favourite place as a child was the Great Dunkane Forest not from from Sonrey. We would take her there on the days off and she would marvel at the giant trees. They are so big they require many people joining hands to encircle,” Kel said. “Even after she became a doctor, when she told us she was taking a couple days off, she didn’t even have to tell us that that was where she was going. We knew,” she said with a fond smile towards to her daughter.

“I liked hiking through there. It was so peaceful after the chaos of the hospital.” Sair inhaled deeply. “I don’t know, there is something about those giant trees that made me feel so small and I guess it’s not so different than being in the vastness of space. It’s perspective. I am but a miniscule piece of a much larger puzzle I will probably never figure out.”

Kel shook her head, but there was nothing but fondness in the gesture. “You are your father’s daughter.”
