Daggum smiled and turned and put his hands on her waist, and slowly and deliberately looked down between them, watching to makes sure her eyes followed his. Staring through the transparent floor, they seemed to be dancing on the stars. The lights dimmed, leaving them lit by a barely visible glow, but letting them see space below them clearly. Nothing happened for a few moments…

She gazed down, relying on the solidity of their bodies to keep her steady.

And then, in a flash, they saw the mechanics of the Universe.

Directly below them, the wormhole opened. The orientation of the station put them seemingly standing directly over the opening into time-space, and the coating on the transparent aluminium floor brought the normally invisible wavelengths into clear view.

Below them was a swirl of energy, of space, of time itself. A vortex of everything and nothing. Daggum took a sharp breath and his hands gripped Faye’s waist, as if he was holding her to keep her from falling into the every-color imaginable spiral of creation and destruction. The light was intense… and then it was gone. A ship must have arrived, but it was much too far away to see.

Faye gasped softly, her eyes transfixed. But it was more than just awe that swept through her. It was like the Universe itself stilled her, made everything slow down to an impossibly sedate pace.

Daggum cleared his throat and looked at Faye. He was breathing slightly fast and his eyes were wide as he smiled at her. “So… better than the evaporating glass?”

Daggum

Her hands slipped down his body as she carefully lowered herself to the transparent floor, settling on her knees. Hands placed on the deck, her widespread fingers framed where the wormhole had been, as if she was still seeing it. She had seen the wormhole before, but this was different. She didn’t know why but it was so incredibly different. Was it her? Was it them? All she knew was that she was deeply and terribly moved and she wasn’t sure there were words to express it.

Somewhere in her mind, more pieces slipped together. Click, click, lock.

~Faye

Daggum knelt in front of her, and he took her hands in his. “Faye… Faye… are you ok? Are you still with me?” he asked softly, his hands gently squeezing hers.

Daggum

When she lifted her head to look at him, she was present, but if anything, she was more present than she ever had been. There was something deep in her eyes, a sort of knowing, as is the being known as Faye Calloway was but for a moment connected to the Universe itself. But it was fleeting and then she blinked and it was gone. “Yeah, I’m okay. Mind dump… but not like they have been before. Different,” she whispered.

“Help me up,” she said quietly, an awed smile on her face. She could get her feet under her, but in the dress and the heeled boots, she needed the extra hand up.

Daggum nodded, but had a concerned look on his face. He moved to his feet and gently helped her to hers, and held her against him as he looked down at her. “Are you okay? I can take you to your room, if you need me to. I’m sure they can deliver the dessert. And I’m sorry if that was too much. I thought it would be something special…”

Daggum

Her expression shifted to dismay. “Oh, Dag, no! It was… is special.” How did she explain? “Oh Gem, you just gave me an incredible gift! One I’m not sure if I could have gotten any other way.” Arms wrapped around him, she all but beamed, exuding joy. “Dag! It didn’t hurt. Don’t you see? The wormhole… “She shook her head. “I’ve seen it before. And when I saw it just like this, when I was sooo happy here with you, it…” It was impossible, how did she convey this? “The minddumps always hurt, but sometimes it’s just a little and I carry on. Other times it’s been incapacitating, but that’s rare. They mucked around in my brain, Dag, but they also left stuff there.” She leaned in close, whispering so he alone could hear. “I’m starting to remember what I see in the dumps. It started in Alex’s office and he triggered my ability to remember. The computer is still trying to work out the math I wrote down,” she said with a grin. “That time I felt like I was dying, but this time? Look at me!” she said, her face alight.

Daggum looked at her and nodded. “Okay… but you will tell me if you don’t feel good, okay?” and he brushed her cheek with his fingers and then kissed her gently, pulling her into him. “And we are definitely getting dessert delivered. I have the sudden urge to share you with nobody else.” He smiled at her and then separated him from her and went to the divider and opened it slightly. A server immediately appeared and said “Sir? May I be of assistance?” Daggum smiled and said “Yes, please. Could you have our desserts delivered to my room, please? And please convey our gratitude to the kitchen. It was…” and he looked back at Faye with a smile of pure love.

“Life changing.”
