Daggum shook his head. “I wouldn’t worry too much about that, honestly. Third shift does suck, but for the first few weeks at least you’ll be manning the Second Officer’s station while the Skipper or XO is on duty. And the other great thing about third shift is that it’s quiet… usually… and you can work on your Command and Control procedures which are the biggest pain in the a$$.” and he chuckled. He looked at Faye and sighed.

“Procedures…” Faye shook her head. The rational part of her brain understood the need for them and how it made everything work efficiently (she loved herself some efficiency, but there was the rest of her that like to crave paths in unexpected ways. And maybe that was a strength but it could also be weakness when paired against people who were by the book. Faye could read, memorize and appreciate the book for what it was, but at the end of the day she’d easily toss it aside if she felt it was necessary.

“You are gonna be so so good Faye. I can see why Cochrane wanted to mentor you.”

Her head tilted slightly and Faye looked at him askance. “Oh? I mean, sure I’m innovative and resourceful, and not easily intimidated. But I am a little wary of the poor commanding officer who one day gets me as a first officer.” She held a finger up. “Though that being said, if they pair us right, the person won’t have a stick shoved so far up their ass they won’t be able to appreciate my rogue nature,” she said with a gleam in her grey-green eyes. “I am an acquired taste after all.”

Daggum laughed as the first course arrived. He thanked the server with the food, and a second arrived with another bottle and two blue, rough-cut crystal glasses. Daggum nodded excitedly and thanked them. As they left, Daggum looked at Faye like a kid at Christmas. “Ok ok ok ok… this is the part I was really most excited about…” and he looked at Faye with an unhidden longing and then a smile, “… food-wise anyway. So… Vilsiturnan mineral water. It has to be served either in the bottle it comes in or the specific glasses here. Seriously… it’s a law there. And I’ll tell you why.” and he opened the bottle and handed it to her.

“Oh, intrigue,” she said with a grin, accepting the bottle

“Take a small sip, just enough for a taste.”

Faye poured a little into her water glass and had a sip, shrugging. It tasted like… water.

“Eh? Tastes just like any mineral water you’ve ever had, right? Little carbonation, little to no flavor. SO… when I pour this into your glass, you have exactly ten minutes to drink it, ok? Are you ready?”

“Oh, a race!” she said with a laugh. “I’m game. Show me this magic of yours.” Faye’s expression was rather intense and though she couldn’t quite explain it, something about Daggum truly was magical.
