“Hmmm,” Faye said, taking up a spot on the corner of the bed. “Definitely a dress, but also a blouse with a skirt. I’ve got pants I can dress up and that would be my usual dressy thing. I’m thinking I want a couple things on hand if we kick it up a notch.”

“Let’s start with the dress then,” Kiama nodded. Running her hand over the row of clothes she pondered for a moment and then pulled out three different dresses. The first one was a navy blue 1950s tea dress with cream coloured strips round the neckline and at two places on the skirt (http://publicifashion.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/vintage-navy-blue-dress.jpg). The second was a simple black midi dress (https://i.pinimg.com/564x/62/e6/3c/62e63c54178b85f6da89722bcc1bf596.jpg). And the third was a floor length, blood red dress that looked simple and innocent form the front, but was rather revealing in the back (https://i.pinimg.com/236x/53/c8/a7/53c8a757b3305960b1b6ed2a9b1aaf7b.jpg).

One by one she held each dress up against her own body and then placed them on the bed next to Faye. “Those are just ideas based on what I have in my wardrobe. If you don’t like them that’s perfectly fine,” Kiama smiled as she watched Faye closely.

Faye had observed Kiama and she could see her in them. She reached over and her fingers traced the blue dress. “This one is very cute, pretty but I think the black one might be closer to what I’m thinking for a semi-formal dinner,” she said, picking it up. Faye held the dress up to her body and looked at herself in the mirror. She was picturing dark eyeshadow and her signature lipstick and nodded. “Yeah. Maybe with some jewellery. Something a bit sparkly?”

Kiama looked closely at Faye and then nodded, “Yes, a dress like that would look good on you. As for jewellery…” Her voice trailed off as she turned around and opened the topmost drawer of her dresser. From inside she pulled a small wooden jewellery box; about 17cm x 24cm x 5cm. Handing it to Faye, she said, “If you find something in there you like I’d be more than happy to lend it to you.

The inside of the box was decided in five differently sized compartments, all covered in black velvet. There were simple ear studs and more extravagant sparkling earrings. Several slender and unassuming rings. A few simple chains of various lengths and materials but also a couple more noticeable and sparkly ones. Several small pendants to go with the different chains and a few, mostly simply bracelets and also two simple anklets.

Setting the dress to the side, Faye carefully went through the box and pulled out one of the more ornate and sparkly necklaces, her eyes going wide. “This is gorgeous. It’s been a long time since I’ve worn anything like this.” She shot Kiama a look. “Just the one time with Kodell. But you know, I think wearing whatever the hell strikes my fancy is the best medicine.” She set the necklace with the multiple large gem drops to the side.

“I think so too,” Kiama smiled and then added, “And it will look great on you. So you should definitely wear it.”

“Okay, so some sort of classy black dress and amazing fancy necklace. Check.” Now…” Faye grabbed the long red dress and held it up. She frowned and shook her head. “Not that I can’t wear red but this doesn’t work on me I don’t think. Maybe it’s the thin straps?” she said turning her head to look at Naim. “Too… delicate? Because I might be a lot of things but delicate is not one of them,” she said with a grin.

~Faye Calloway

Tilting her head, Kiama nodded thoughtfully. “I agree. Something less delicate.” Turning around once more, she skimmed her dresses once again and then pulled out two others. One was a light green one made of satin (https://i.pinimg.com/564x/74/76/b7/7476b70705f3fda67093e61007f300e1.jpg). The other was another navy blue one, but floor length and clearly a simple evening gown (https://i.pinimg.com/564x/31/b9/ee/31b9eea643a227c9633a5914bab8bbef.jpg). Again holding both up in front of her body and then putting them down on her bed. “Maybe?” she asked a little sceptically. “The few other dresses I have definitely fall into the frilly category. Like this one.” And she pulled a pale pink dress out with some tulle and lace (https://i.pinimg.com/564x/7a/a4/0d/7aa40d4c270b27ea621951c33d0cf311.jpg).

Faye eyed the selection but her eyes were fixed on the green dress. Still, she let her attention drift to the pink one and gave a lopsided smile as her fingers traced the embroidered tulle. “Might be a bit much for dinner.” Her eyes darted back to the green dress and though it was more… flamboyant than she would have ever thought would suit her, she was drawn to it still.

Picking up the full skirted dress, she held it up. The neckline would flow quite nicely over her chest and though she was was rather thin, the skirt would still be flattering. The colour though! It seemed to pick up the green in her pale stormy eyes. Faye pulled some of her dark hair over her shoulder, the fabric making her dark hair almost richer looking. She turned to Kiama. “What do you think?” she said softly, uncertain and yet hopeful.

~Faye Calloway, Secret Romantic

“I think that you’d look absolutely stunning in it,” Kiama replied sincerely and just as softly. She had been watching Faye closely and as her friend held the dress up she could really see her in it. “You should definitely take it along on your vacation, in your size of course, and you have to promise to wear it,” she grinned. “And afterwards I want to hear all about how Daggum reacted when he saw you in the dress.” Her grin turned rather mischievious at those words and she couldn’t help laugh softly.
