“Cats?” Dag asked and thought for a minute. “I don’t think Ive ever been around one outside of the - … well… they used animals sometimes on Orion. But I’ve never had any or known anyone who did. So I dunno. Why?”
Daggum
“Because of Tess. I’ll explain in a moment, but come look. “As they found their way to the crew’s raised bed section on this side of the garden, Faye steered them to the outside corner one that was hers. there was a large black metal openwork obelisk in the middle with a rounded finial on the top. A vine was snaking it way up, perfuming the area with a hint of a sweet smell coming from downturned frilly flowers in a deep purple. Around the edge of the full sized bed there were flowers mixed throughout and hanging over the edges, with all sort of vegetables growing throughout. Hot peppers that were just starting to flower, bush tomatoes, some sort of large root vegetable peeking out of the ground with a frilly green top, plus a bunch of other things less identifiable that were just getting growing. It was a work in progress, but it gave her so much joy. She crouched at the bed and beamed at him. “I have a t-shirt that I garden in that says: I garden so I don’t choke people. Save a life, send mulch,” she said with a chuckle. “It’s very true.”
“Well, your… uh… boyfriend?… whatever… is in Logistics. You need mulch, just say the word and baby? I’ll send you mulch.” and he laughed
Faye laughed. “Just don’t ask about the bodies that might exist before you starting sending me mulch,” she said with a grin. What to call him though, well, that was an entirely different matter, and she just wasn’t sure what the answer was to that question. Something for later, though.
Faye inhaled audibly. “So Tess is my therapy animal. She’s a cat- half Terran, half Betazoid breeds- and is empathic. She’s only six months old so not full grown yet, but she’s already been through some training. She’s taught to recognize distress and she’s getting to know my moods. The hope is that if I dissociate, she can pull me back and if it was really bad, she can summon help. We’ve got a panic button system set up.” She grinned at Daggum. “She’s very smart. And she is getting to know those in my life so she can connect my emotions with those around me. And you are so important to me that while you’re here I want her to sense you so when she sees you on my screen she can make that association. Besides, I forgot something in my quarters I need to grab, so I might as well check on her anyway.”

Daggum looked at her and just said “I think that’s a great idea. And I’d love to meet her.” and he offered her his arm and said “Shall we?” with a grin.

Faye wasn’t sure what she expected, but mostly she didn’t want to learn he was allergic to cats. That could make things complicated, though their time together was going to be relatively brief. Sadly.
Faye reached out and picked something off of one of the larger woody plants. Rising to her feet and slipping her arm through his, Faye leaned on Dag slightly as she offered him one of the bright green leaves. The smell was one of those ones that harkened her back to her childhood. “Don’t worry, it won’t bite. It’s just mint,” she said with a grin. “Good for the breath.” She popped it in her mouth with a gleam in her eyes.
With the ship on stand-down and much of the crew on leave, the corridors were quiet. So it wasn’t hard to go sneak down the three blocks to Deck Seven and her quarters in Section Four. So Faye was unusually relaxed about running into anyone and even instigated a lovely long kiss in the turbolift.
Faye’s small quarters were neat and tidy, but also fairly bare. She didn’t seem to have a lot of personal effects, save for perhaps a surprising number of plants tucked in nooks and corners of her place. There was a shelving unit with grow lights where trays of lush plants looked almost ready to transplant. In addition to a small sofa and a small dining table, she had a side table in a corner with some sort of cooking implement (a personal oven of some sort), and there was a desk with a small stack of padds. The computer was shut off. A square grass basket sat on the floor against a wall and held her rolled up yoga mat, a cork block and a blanket. There was also some sort of low box-cabinet thing upon which a leafy plant sat on top.
Everything seemed in order except for one small detail: a sock lying in the middle of the floor.
As Faye unlocked her door and stepped in, something flew through the air to land on the sock and proceeded to attack it, rolling over. But the second Faye and Daggum stepped fully in, the blur of an object leapt up and back as if startled. Faye bust out laughing, slapping a hand over her mouth. The six-month old cat had darted under one of the dining chairs, clearly not expecting them to have walked through. “Tess! What were you doing to my poor sock? Where did you get one of my socks from?” Faye asked with a laugh as she crouched down. “And I’m sorry I startled you, sweetheart.”
Creeping out from under the chair, the white and grey long-haired cat trotted over as if nothing had happened and she hadn’t been caught terrorizing a sock. She let out a ‘mew’ and rubbed her head against Faye’s hand. Faye scooped her up and held her against her chest. She was still young and while not super tiny, still had some growing to do. “Tess… this is Daggum, Dag, this is Tes,” she said, feeling nothing but warmth and adoration as she looked at Daggum.

Daggum looked at the cat, his emerald eyes looking straight into the cat’s. He looked for a long minute before he said “Ok… that’s pretty freaking cute. I’m a fan.” and he smiled and looked at Faye. Even in the instant he did, his heart jumped and a shock went through his body. What is it about her that makes me feel like I’m being shocked in the best way possible? he thought to himself. His love for Faye radiated out of him and he said “Can I hold her?” and he held out a large green arm, more than wide enough to support the tiny ball of fur.
Daggum
“Of course,” Faye replied as she cradled Tess from underneath and handed her to Dag.
The half-ragdoll cat didn’t seem to mind being held at all, and in fact she relaxed quickly and all but draped over Daggum. With a little nudge of her nose on his arm, she began to purr.
Faye beamed and in watching the two together she couldn’t help but feel that all was right in the Universe. Tess was an unexpected part of her life and so was Dag. “Well, I think she likes you,” she said, reaching out to stroke Tess. “I think that means I’m allowed to keep you around,” she teased.

Dag stroked the cat’s fur and scratched gently behind her ears as she began kneading his arm lightly with her claws. “I guess so. She’s pretty cool, Faye.” and he leaned close to the cat and said “You’re gonna be my buddy, aren’t you? Make sure she’s taken care of while I’m not here? Yeah… and then I’ll come and bewith you both.” and he smiled. He looked at Faye and said “Why didn’t you bring her with you to the hotel? Wanted her to get used to the ship first or something?”
