USS Manhattan
Prologue - Nrom's Courier Ship
Time: Two Days Before the Arrival of the Manhattan
Place: Delta Quadrant near Event Horizon
Setting: The Bridge of Nrom’s Courier Ship
“Of course, Sir,” the human said into the open doorway that led to Nrom’s office on board his ship, The Malone.
“Nrom wants us to investigate the disturbance, he said that the delivery is important, but this may have wider ramifications for what Event Horizon and the Federation are wanting to achieve here,” she said, as she reached the command chair.
“Let’s go in there at cruising speed,” she added.
“Was that all Nrom said,” the Trill at the helm station asked, “it seems to me that …”
“No, he said much more,” the human replied, “you know Nrom, can talk underwater or perhaps even the vacuum of space.”
“But in space, no one can hear you …,” the Romulan at the ship’s operations station protested.
“I think that Nrom would probably test, and perhaps break, that theory,” the human said.
“Yes, he once cleared his throat and by the end of it he explained the history of the Lissepian Mother’s Day Heist to me, I realised it took fifteen minutes for the throat cleaning to end, and in that time he spoke me through the entire event,” the Trill said.
“Unlikely,” the Romulan said, “I think that …”
What he thought wasn’t expressed, because at that moment, some kind of proximity alarm went off and all three of the crew members focused on their consoles. A small vessel, about the size of a Federation shuttlecraft was flying haphazardly, but despite the best efforts of the Romulan to contact the vessel, it wasn’t responding to hails. Attempts to scan the vessel also proved ineffective. They had, however managed to record the images of the vessel.
Then another vessel appeared, one they all recognised as belonging to the Hirogen and the human at the conn felt a level of anxiety. Had the Hirogen fired on them, the human suspected they’d all be floating in space by now, but instead the Hirogen vessel fired on the smaller vessel. Surprisingly, the vessel remained intact, and more than that, the fired beams reflected back onto the Hirogen vessel, damaging it. The Hirogen fired some kind of torpedoes at the smaller unknown vessel, which seemed to cause some damage and then the human said, “haill the Hirogen vessel.”
The Romulan complied and the human said, “this is the courier ship, the Malone. Please leave the area immediately and stop firing on that vessel. A message has been sent to the Federation station Event Horizon and they are sending a ship here to protect their interests.”
The Hirogen vessel left without response, and the other damaged vessel had seemingly disappeared. The door to Nrom’s office opened and the Ferengi doctor stepped outside.
“Nrom said to pass on his thanks for solving that issue. He would like to follow that damaged ship and find it, however we’re on a tight schedule and he wants us to reach Event Horizon asap. He’s preparing a full report for the Commander of the station now,” the Ferengi advised.
The Malone headed towards the Event Horizon station with their report and supplies.
