After leaving the transporter room, Shara beelined for home. She stepped into their space and immediately knocked on his officer door. But rather than go in, she moved over to their living room sofa and sat down, stretching her legs out and crossing them at the ankle. Because she didn’t request to come in, this was their sign they needed to talk. As she sat there, her mind was buzzing.

~Shara Calloway, CIO

The door stayed closed for a moment after she sat and then slid open. Micah was dressed in dark blue tactical pants and a black t-shirt that seemed to make his muscular build look all the more solid. On the t-shirt were red letters that said ‘I Have 2 Beautiful Daughters. I Also Have A Gun, A Shovel, And An Alibi.’ He walked towards Shara and took a seat in the chair next to the couch and leaned back, eyes locked on her. “What’s up?” he asked plainly, but there was a tell-tale glint in his eye that she knew spoke of mischief on some level.

Micah

A tiny smirk tugged at her mouth as she drank him in. “Well, as much as I’d like to just have a little quick fun before I get back to work, my work actually involves you.” That made her grin outright. “We have a new assignment. An ‘all-resources-you-need-assignment’, which I personally love because it sure as hell beat scrounging on some back water world trying to survive at the same time as doing the impossible. “Fed Sec is being tight-lipped about a situation the Asimov is now tasked with investigating by Admiral Oleg herself. Dead Fed Sec agent dressed as a clown crashes into a Federation Ambassador’s residence on Seferian Seven with a Fabergé egg in his hand. Ring a bell?”

~Shara Calloway, CIO

Micah took a breath. “Yeah… Agent Patrick Coleson. I actually trained him.” he said flatly. His jaw clenched and he exhaled slowly before forcing himself to relax. “Faberge egg, Intel snagged it, no more information forthcoming between them and us. That about sum it up?” he asked sarcastically.

Pikelsimer, FedSec

“Initially, yes. But…” She studied him for a moment wondering how personal this would get for him. Micah didn’t take people under his wing lightly. “We have the egg. And there was something inside that is the subject of our investigation.” Shara blew out a breath. “Do you know what Coleson’s assignment was or how he came across the egg?”

~Shara Calloway, CIO

Micah shook his head. “Nope. FedSec compartmentalizes operations even more than Intel. I do know who the case officer was for his assignment, though. As far as the egg goes, I can tell you that is is linked to a whole history of crimes stretching back a few hundred years. If that is the actual egg, that is.”

Pikelsimer, FedSec

“You think it’s a fake?” Shara said, leaning back into the couch as she appraised her spouse. Surely Oleg would have verified its authenticity, right? But in this case, with so many unknowns, Shara wasn’t leaving anything to chance.

~Shara Calloway, CIO

Micah shrugged. “No idea. But I don’t think the egg is really all that important. It’s been a focal point for theft, murder, adultery, blackmail, assassination, confidence schemes, fraud, divorce, marriage, kidnappings, extortion, and pretty much any other crime you can think of. And there are like a hundred known forgeries of it. But you said there was something in this one. That’s new. So someone knew the egg was highly visible, and they hid something in it? To me, that means they wanted whatever was in it to be found.”

Pikelsimer, FedSec

Shara drew in a slow and measured breath, focusing her attention fully on him. “We’re investigating a covered up massacre from the Dominion War years. Have you heard of a settlement called Shiang-Gui?”

~Shara Calloway, CIO

Micah’s brow furrowed as he thought. “Hmmm… not that I can recall. Where is it? And what do you know so far?”

Pikelsimer, FedSec

“I haven’t checked into the physical location, though that’s my next step once I delve into what I can get access to, but the settlement was in a small area affected by the war but the Maquis, Dominion and Cardassians had no presence whatsoever. So they were pretty much minding their own business when satellite footage noted a starship entering the orbit and then opening fire. Destroyed everything. Here’s the kicker… the ship’s class was easy to peg but it was unmarked: a Sovereign-class ship. It was one of ours. I have people looking into the registries and seeing if we can determine if there are any unaccounted for vessel in the class, but suffice to say our orders are to find out who is responsible for the massacre so they can be brought to justice. And someone is out killing whomever had possession of the egg because they don’t want the information to be made public.” This all played a little too weird in her mind. She remembered being a colonist just minding her own business, but at least her and the others could fight back. The people at Shiang-Gui never even had a chance.

~Shara Calloway, XO

Micah’s brow furrowed and he grunted. “Sovereign-class, huh.” he said deliberately as a statement, not a question. He looked at Shara and said “Gimme twenty minutes,, will you? I have a conference call to go over some personnel records, and I need room to pace.” Micah and Shara hadn’t been married long… and their ‘courtship’ was even shorter. But they knew one another, and the fact that they were both experts at subtext made their unspoken spoken conversations something to hear… should anyone be listening.

Pikelsimer, FedSec

Her eyes were briefly intense before she shrugged. “Sure. I’ll go get some coffee and see how the others are doing. Call me when you’re free.” She pushed up to her feet and slipped out of their quarters, letting him do what he needed to do.

~Shara Calloway, XO

It was almost an hour later when her comms chirped, but no message came through.

Shara didn’t need an explanation and simply headed back to their quarters.

As the doors to their quarters slid open, there was no sign of Micah. The door to his ‘office’ was closed as usual, but the light on the door wasn’t lit so he wasn’t inside. But sitting on the coffee table was an single data disc with an old-fashioned sticky note on it. And on the sticky-note was a large red heart and scrawled words that said You can pay me back later…

She smirked and allowed herself to briefly imagine what that payback would look like. She peeled the sticky note off the disc and restruck it to the wall above her desk before she settled in and accessed the disc’s contents.

The disc contained an old FedSec report from just after the Dominion War began. Two versions of the same report, actually. The first was labeled “For Official Dissemination”. It stated that there had been a sabotage attack at the Hyfren Ship Yards. The orbital facilities had been completely destroyed by an purposefully overloaded warp core inside one of the ships being refitted. All twenty-seven ships and twelve thousand lives were lost. The event was common knowledge, of course. It was the single-greatest loss of civilian life in a non-combat related event of the war.

The second report was the original. The report was more detailed, went into suspects and how they managed to get inside the ship… an Excelsior class that had come out of retirement to be used in the war. It also listed all the ships that had been lost… all twenty-eight of them.

Pikelsimer, FedSec

She read the repots and the re-read the reports. “Bingo,” she murmured. She had the computer put the lists from the first report and the second report and identify the extra ship in the second report.

~Shara Calloway, XO

The lists of destroyed ships was extensive. Unfortunately, there was no reference to any ship that was missing. Her years of intelligence analysis showed her another item for the list. Of the two reports, there was only one discrepancy in the number of vessels. Just the one, and no explanation. It would seem that whomever scrubbed the incident from history may have missed a single entry.

GM

Shara laced her fingers together and bent them backwards, cracking her knuckles. “Okay, time to find what you don’t want me to.” She pulled up a terminal window within her encrypted workspace and set up a query to cross reference every report from Hyfen ship yards that listed ships being docked or built at the base in the six months before the shipyard destruction. She knew that someone would have done a thorough job, but they clearly hadn’t been perfect. If she could just accumulate a list of ship names, she could find a way to systematically rule out which ones were in dock at the time of the attack.

~Shara Calloway, XO

It took… a while. Whomever had sanitized the information was more thorough than any hacker or espionage agency she had ever encountered. Other than the one discrepancy in the number of ships, there was no mention of the extra ship anywhere. No docking manifest, no flight plans, no dockmaster records… nothing. But it was then that she caught a break. Not in data, but in a vid report from the station’s security chief a day or two before the destruction of the shipyards. While it played and she listened, she happened to glance up at just the right time. There, in the background of the office the Chief sat in, was a window looking out over the shipyards. And docked three cradles past the window…

Was a Sovereign-Class starship. Not only that, but she could see the saucer… and the registry number: NC-74105-2.

GM

Shara ran a deep search for the registry number, looking for any references.

~Shara Calloway, XO

The computer chirped almost immediately. NCC-74105-2 was the current registry number for the USS Portsallia, a heavy research vessel currently under construction at the Atican Industrial Complex.

GM

“Huh,” she said aloud. “Computer, give me the assignment history for the USS Portsalia and it current whereabouts.”

~Shara Calloway, XO

Bump

=/\= Assignment history unavailable. USS Portsalia is currently under construction. Completion expected six standard months from now. =/\= came the response.

GM

She drummed her fingers on the console and frowned. So someone had erased the previous iteration of the vessel. But how well? “Computer, who authorized that registry number, when, and where?”

~Shara Calloway, XO

=/\= Registry number assigned per Star Fleet Dockmaster stationed at the Portsalia shipyards. =/\= The date was just over a year prior.

GM

“Show me the dockmaster, their personnel file, and any related files, classified and not.” She wasn’t expecting an obvious connection but right now she needed information, eve if it was something she stashed away in her brain that might become relevant later.
