A smirk played upon her lips. “Well, we have a rather eclectic crew on the whole, but the whole senior staff forms a rather unique little group. We’re all from very different backgrounds.” Shara leaned in before. “Just in case the rumour take on a life of their own, not only was I an intelligence officer for twenty-two years before I got this promotion, but I used to be considered an enemy of the Federation when I was a member of the Maquis.” She shrugged. “But that was a long time ago. Still, it’s funny how people like to spin the stories. I’m getting rather amused at some of them.”

Harry chuckled. “I wasn’t even born when the Marquis were a thing,” he said with a slight grin, trying slightly to wind up the XO. “Of course, the danger there is that I don’t know right from wrong, and will now believe anything anyone says about you.” He took a sip of his tea, watching Shara’s reaction.

She gave a half-shrug. “The hazards of having the career I’ve had is that almost all of my records are classified. The rumours just add to the air of mystery,” she said, breaking into a tiny chuckle.

“What about you? Since you’re a kid and all, and don’t have the Dominion War or related times as a reason. Why, Starfleet?” She could at least poke him back about age.

“Touché,” replied Harry, with a smile. “And I guess I’m following in the old man’s footsteps,” he said with a smile. “Although he was a science officer; I don’t think he’s forgiven me for following my mother’s interest in physics and engineering,” he continued. “I guess Starfleet has always been in our blood.”

Shara nodded. “I spent seven years as an engineer before I went into Intelligence. I’m good with computer systems, programming, math. Stuff like that. If you ever need a hand with anything or we’re in a tight spot. Lieutenant Gadi is also good with the computer stuff. Hazards of our previous careers.”

“I always liked science, but I guess I was more of the applied sciences type of person than theoretical.”

“That’s a kind offer,” Henry said with a smile. Whilst he didn’t expect to need to call upon it when it came to ship maintenance, it would be useful for any future analysis of any unknown technology.

His console beeped briefly. “Ahh, that will be results of the ship diagnostics coming in,” he said. “I’m hoping that the warp core will be more efficient now that we’ve put right the mess the starbase engineers left it in.”

She chuckled. “It didn’t help that this ship was acquired through surreptitious means. It didn’t come to us directly the way they usually are, but it was all a part of the mission. I’m not surprised there are random issues. Anything else I should be aware of as XO in terms of ship functions?”

Harry suppressed a slight expression of disbelieve; no wonder the ship’s systems were all over the place.

“Oh, nothing of importance,” he said with a grin, “other than the ship’s functions will be significantly better once we’re done.” He was aware that was quite a claim, but he also knew that he could deliver.
