“Your estimates are probably just about right.” She chuckled. “History is rarely neutral toward someone. Especially authority figures. What about you? Do you have command aspirations?” Sara wondered if he was content flying the ship, or if he had his own goals to take her job someday

Kohana thought for a moment before answering. “Maybe. . . someday. I do plan on taking the command school track at some point. Become a department head or even XO. Right know, I enjoy being in the field or sitting at the helm more than being in command. Maybe I’ll change my opinion after I’ve experienced that first hand. No offense, Captain, but right now, I feel sitting in the command chair and giving orders isn’t my cup of tea. I like to be in on the action.”

Sara nodded. “That makes total sense. If what you’re doing now is making you happy, then you should pursue that. You are eligible for a Department Head position. Commander Calloway is taking over as XO. So her position is vacant. I wanted to offer because when I was a Junior Officer, I wasn’t anywhere close to done and in one hell of a hurry. So if taking over as CIO interests you, it’s yours. And you can continue to use the helm as your bridge station.”

Kohana was surprised by this request, yet kept calm demeanor.

“I . . . those are big shoes to fill, Captain. I’m honored that you feel I’m capable of fulfilling the role of CIO.

He silently contemplated the offer for a few minutes.

“Yes, I accept, Captain. Thank you.”

Sara smiled broadly. She extended her hand to Kohana. “Congratulations, Lieutenant.” Having Black Wolf on the command team would be a huge asset. “I look forward to working with you more closely in times to come.”

Kohana grinned as he stood up. “Hopefully, this means you won’t be throwing a phaser in my face again? Unless it’s warranted, of course.”

Sara laughed “I’ll try to keep from doing that without due cause. I’m glad we have this opportunity to try again and maybe work together more smoothly. Commander Calloway will know anything you need to be filled in on as far as responsibilities with your new job.”
