The connection broke slowly. Aasrel blinked and then leaned back in his own chair. He accepted the cup and drank out of it. Then he smiled at T’Jal. “Thank you.”

T’Jal drank half her cup before grabbing a muffin. “I am glad I could help. There is still a journey ahead of both of you. But now you will be able to move forward.” She picked a piece off the muffin, “Thank you Bethany. How do you feel Aasrel?”

Lt. Cmdr. Gadi, COS

“Good. Tired.” Aasrel responded. The tiredness was a result of the release of all that emotion. He reached back in his mind… but it simply wasn’t there. He could remember, but the fear and sorrow was gone entirely. “Will I still have nightmares about it?”

“That is a difficult question to answer. You should not. As you go through the counseling process it is likely you will dream about it, but you should not feel afraid. It would be more like watching a scary movie. However if the dream includes something that is not part of your blocked emotions, then you will have a nightmare. Dreams are tricky things, and the way our minds piece things together in a dream state is not logical,” T’Jal answered. “Now as you reach the point where your mind is ready to process and handle those emotions, your dreams will become more vivid and first person. However the emotions should only be slight until you are ready to have the block removed.”

So he might still have that nightmare about Bethany but not about the attack. That was tolerable.

“Just as I gave you a phrase for Bethany, I am giving her one for you as well. If you are uncertain to use it, either of you, reach out to me. I will travel to you, and we can discuss it.”

Aasrel nodded. He reached out for her empathically one last time, as if for comfort. He nodded. “How long will it last?”

The older woman smiled and shrugged. “That depends on you and how effective your counseling is. You can’t put a time frame on these things. As in medicine every patient heals differently. It will stay in place until you are ready, or you suffer some kind of brain injury that disconnects your memories.”

Aasrel chuckled nervously. “I’ve already had one brain bleed, let’s not tempt fate.” He said and smiled. “Really, thank you.”

T’Jal nodded, “You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help. We’ll be here until after you both depart, so if there are any problems or questions, ask. I insist.” She stood after finishing the muffin and juice Bethany had provided. She took Bethany by the shoulders and looked at her intently for a moment and then hugged her. She turned to Aasrel, bowed slightly and then slipped out of the room.

Bethany sat down next to him and smiled. “So… what do you want to do?”

“Pack, I guess.” Aasrel hugged her, just because he could. “We can talk to my physical therapist when I have my appointment.”

Bethany hugged him back tightly. “Sounds good. After we pack, should we venture out and see how we do in a crowd? Or would you rather stay in and adjust quietly?” She looked at him, head tipped to the side, “You look tired.”

“Let’s try venturing out tomorrow.” Aasrel replied. “I am tired. I think it’s a result of the emotions being gone, that’s all.” He smiled, “You really are going to love this trip.”

Bethany smiled. “I’m going with you, of course I will.” She stood up, “Why don’t you go sleep for awhile.” She knew how taxing a meld could be. “We can eat later and watch a movie or something.”

“Hmmm…” Aasrel tugged on her gently. “Only if you lie with me.” He smiled at her and laid his head on her. “Then I can cuddle you while I sleep.”

Bethany grinned, but was interuppted by a hard impact to Aasrel’s leg. Not enough to damage, but he felt it.

Luna stretched up on her hund legs and stared at them. She wanted attention. They could both feel it quite clearly. “I think she’s claimed you. I think she would like to be your cuddle partner.” Bethany chuckled.

Aasrel carefully and gently lifted the bunny into his lap. “Me? You’re going to make Bethany jealous.” He teased quietly. “But how can I say no when you ask like that?” Then he gave her a little pet on the head.

“During my brief stint as a ship’s counselor, Luna used to go to my office with me. She lived the attention and was really good at calming people down.” Bethany smiled and rubbed one of Luna’s ears. “She’s tiny but has a huge heart. She needs the extra attention.”

Luna hunkered down on his lap, closed her eyes and her ears went floppy. “She’ll go to sleep like that.”

“She’s comfortable and happy,” Aasrel said. He poked the rabbit gently, “How am I supposed to lay down if you fall asleep on me now?”

Bethany giggled quietly as Luna looked up at Aasrel but plp00didn’t move. “I think I can do something about that.” She slid her hands carefully under Luna and picked her up. Cradling her to her chest she stood. “Come on spoiled girl. You can go back to him after we lay down.” Bethany set her down on the bed and then slid under the blanket.

Luna hopped around around waiting for Aasrel and then curled up on him.

Aasrel lay down next to Bethany, under the blanket. Luna curled up on his chest like a warm little weight. He cuddled into Bethany, one hand over the rabbit’s little back, and promptly fell asleep.

Luna was soon equally asleep. Bethany watched them both for awhile, feeling extremely content. After awhile, she slipped out of the bed and quietly began packing.

Aasrel slept soundly for a few hours. When he woke, Luna was still laying on him and he brought his hand up to give the small, fluffy animal some scratch. Then he carefully and gently moved her and looked to see where Bethany went.

Bethany was standing in the doorway, a cup of coffee in hand, watching them. You’re really good with her. She grinned over the rim as she took a drink.

Aasrel smiled as he stood off the bed. I’ve always been good with animals. He raised a brow and his smile turned to more of a playful grin. You better have made me some of that. Your coffee is amazing.

Bethany grinned, Doc, would I ever withhold coffee, well anything, from you? She took another sip and walked back into the living area. Yours is on the table. How are you feeling?

Aasrel gave the rabbit one last pat, then followed her out to the living area. He picked the cup up off the table and took a drink from it. I feel okay, he said. Like a ton of weight is suddenly gone.

Bethany nodded. Same. I don’t quite know what to do with myself. She sat down on the couch, legs tucked under her. We’re packed. Wasn’t much to do since it all has to go with us.
