Liam nodded to himself, taking note of Harry’s assessment of the warp drive’s efficiency. “Aye, mate, sounds like we’ve got our work cut out for us,” he replied, slipping into his familiar Aussie slang without missing a beat. “Can’t be havin’ our warp drive actin’ up when we’re meant to be enjoyin’ a bit of shore leave, can we?”

Surveying the schematics on the screen, Liam’s brow furrowed as he noted the problematic areas indicated by the flashing red and yellow. “Bloody typical, innit?” he muttered under his breath. “Starbase engineers always messin’ with things they shouldn’t.” With a resigned sigh, he grabbed the tool kit he’d been using to repair the replicators slinging it over his shoulder.

“Right, let’s get crackin’, then” Liam said, “Lead the way Lieutenant”

Harry nodded as he headed toward one of the Jefferies tube. The antimatter ejectors were rather unhelpfully hidden behind bulkheads, so it would be a bit tricky getting to them, but he hoped that it wouldn’t take too long to realign them.

“So, what brought you to the Asimov?” He asked Liam as he popped open the door to the Jefferies tube.

He considered the question for a moment, lingering at the Jeffries tube opening he had just created by pressing the hatch control. “If I’m honest, I didn’t have much say in the matter. I was aware of the few ships we were going to be assigned but I didn’t submit a preference, engineering on one ship is the same as another, just pick off the lot really” He explained kneeling and moving into the Jefferies tube. “What about you sir? I guess as a Lieutenant you had more say in where you wanted to go?”

“Well, it was Starfleet that got in touch with me on this one.” he replied as he followed Liam into the Jeffries tube. “I’ve always enjoyed appropriately pushing boundaries when it comes to Starfleet Engineering, which I think piqued Starfleet’s interested when they needed someone at fairly short notice to be the Chief Engineer on an intelligence ship.” he continued, with a slight grin. “And besides, I wasn’t going to turn down a department head role.”

A few seconds later, the tube opened up into a wider crawl space, with all of the surfaces covered with panels. “It should be panel 8-9 Charlie 5” he said, looking around. He then noticed one of the panels on the floor, and an open space that revealed the injectors.

“Hmm, what’s the betting those starbase engineers didn’t put that back on?” he asked Liam.

“I’d say the odds are pretty high,” he remarked, a hint of amusement in his voice. “Seems like they couldn’t be bothered to tidy up after themselves.”

Liam crouched down beside the open space, peering inside to get a closer look at the antimatter injectors. “Looks like they left us a bit of a mess to clean up,” he observed, noting the disarray of components within. “No worries, though. We’ll have this sorted in no time.”

Harry opened up a diagnostic tricorder as he started to take some more detailed recordings, which he planned to submit as part of his report. He noticed Liam getting started with the job, and was quietly impressed that he needed minimal direction.

Reaching into his tool kit, Liam selected a sonic spanner, his fingers manipulating the device as he began the process of realigning the ejectors. “I really don’t get why they let those space cowboys get away with so much, it’s like they go out of their way to give us work.” He continued to work before stopping and asking, “Where was you before?”

Harry paused for a moment, realising where Liam might have been going with his line of question. “Well, don’t laugh, but I was working in the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, although I wasn’t assigned to a starbase, I hasten to add!” he said with grin.

“How about you?” he asked the Ensign.

“Just one of the names drawn from the list of graduates, I suppose. As for my preferences, I left them as non-applicable. I wasn’t really too concerned with where I’d end up for my first posting. I know some people aim for smaller ships or even aspire to serve on a flagship, but for me, there’s something intriguing about the unknown,” he explained, making a few more adjustments. “How’s that looking now?” he inquired, eager for feedback.
