“Betazed doesn’t need me to help it reclaim itself. There are millions there doing it. It would be no great loss to never go back, but I always keep my word.” Bethany drained the rest of her glass. She shouldn’t, she wasn’t a drinker, but she could hold it. She held the glass out toward Shara. “Your daughter may not care to see her father. I never want to see mine again. With any luck, he’s dead.”

Lt. Cmdr. Gadi, COS

Shara threw back the rest of tola in her glass and then poured her and Bethy another. “I don’t know the context for your father, but if he was anything like mine… I get it.”

She had shared quite a bit about her and her father’s relationship during the night of the moonshine, but it had been in the context of talking about the baby girl she had given up for adoption. “Nadine though, her’s is a different situation. Curtis is a good guy. Decent. I don’t blame him for not wanting to be a father at sixteen. He did what was right for him, and I tried to do the same for myself. Nadine has hinted that she probably wants to meet him. Completing the picture of her life and all that.” She took a sip. “I did call him to warn him that he had a daughter who may or may not want to know him, and it was… interesting.” She broke into slight smile. “I think despite it all, I’m glad things went they way they did. I was never meant to stay on Midos and he deserved to have his own happiness. We could use more good people like him in this galaxy.”

Bethany nodded, “To each their own.” She took smaller sips this time, but was still going at it pretty fast. “There aren’t enough good people to negate the bad. Glad for her he’s a good one.” The whiskey and tola just weren’t doing it.

Shara wasn’t oblivious and she was keeping an eye on her friend. That mindless knocking back- she knew it too well this last year, a fact that still sat uncomfortably with her given their talks of terrible fathers. “I don’t know, Bethy. I think our particular lives and jobs give us a negativity bias. We’re been around all the terrible people, but in a galaxy with so many people, I think you underestimate the good ones. There’s more out there than it might seem. It’s easier to assume most are terrible, but I don’t know how much it helps us in the end.”

Bethany waved a hand at her. “I don’t know. Most people are neutral. Depends on the situation. There are more good than evil, but all that good doesn’t balance what the evil does.”

“Perhaps,” she said with a nod. “But if we give up on the idea of the good being worth fighting for then the evil really does take over and win. I don’t know about you, but I can’t let that happen. I just think that we’re used to deal with certain kinds of people. But if you go meet everyday people, living everyday sorts of lives, there might just be more power in that good than we experience in our work.”

“Oh, I know it. It’s why I went into Intelligence. Doesn’t make it less true that we aren’t fighting to win, but to keep the status quo.” She knocked back half of what was left and glared at the glass as if it did something wrong.

Shara got up and moved to the replicator, grabbing a glass of water and moved back to Bethy, sitting it down. “I’m going to sounds unusually like a mother just now, but you need to drink that. Since you’re already said you’re aiming for permanent amnesia, and I already said killing brain cells was no-no, I’d really like to make sure you don’t end up in Sickbay because we’re being stupid. We’re a lot of things, but that is not one of them.” She did not offer to refill the glass just now.
