“Is she eating those? Not likely that I mean unless someone’s crashing them up and feeding her them.” He opened his eyes. “Now who’s paranoid? Anyway would come up on the scans.” He drummed his fingers rhythmically across his abdomen and was quiet again for about an hour or so, staring at the ceiling. He frowned and moving his hands slowly began scratching himself at his neck, down his chest and along the same route Bethany had.

“Blood…” he said.

=^= computer, give me an Audible readout of the patients blood test results, highlight any inflammation markers or hormone imbalances…”

MD

=/\=Blood scan results show normal results for inflammation markers except for elevated white blood cell count. Hormone imbalances show elevated markers in her Psilosynine level. This level should be almost zero as the hormone does not spread to the blood stream as it is burned off before leaving the paracortex.=/\=

Gadi, CoS

Ryley sat up. “The levels should be zero, not almost zero. No telepathy should mean no levels…” he lowered himself from the biobed, hissing as the motion caused his bad leg to cramp. Carefully he removed the handheld part of the tricorder and pointed it Bethany’s head. “ Are you expecting me to believe that high levels of a neurotransmitter and the corresponding hormone are present in someone who shouldn’t have them.” He adjusted the tricorder and looked for any indication of activity in the paracortex.

The gland that produced the Psilosynine seemed to be in over drive, but the paracortex was dormant. So that left the hormone unused and seemed to be creating a build up that had to go somewhere.

Gadi, CoS

“Now that’s interesting…” Ryley said to himself. He watched the readings for a short time and moved to rummage in some of the hypospray compartments. What did he have that would reduce a hormone that shouldn’t be there…presently he returned and after some considering turned off the alpha wave induced and waited for Bethany to wake.

Bethany came awake almost instantly. Hazard of the job, the smell and sounds of sickbay came to her and she gave a disappointed mental sigh. She was still not sleeping. Wonderful. She opened her eyes to find Ryley standing over her. That was not disturbing at all. She eyed him wondering where his cane was. She was going to have to modify that thing for him. She sat up, one leg tucked under the opposite knee, foot hanging to the floor. She could still feel her heart racing. “Well sleep didn’t help.”

Gadi, CoS

Ryley for his part watched her readings as consciousness returned. He leaned back against the biobed beside hers, taking the weight from his bad leg. Absently he massaged his thigh. “It wouldn’t. I have some answers for you. That’s why I woke you. Your body is full of Psilosynine. The paracortex is dormant, not entirely cut off but the gland that produces the required chemicals apparently didn’t get the memo.”

He spread his hands. “Essentially it’s pumping you full of the stuff but then it’s nowhere to go because the telepathy hasn’t kicked in. Something’s preventing that happening on a physiological level which I haven’t figured out yet. The build up is causing your immune system to see it as a foreign invasion for some reason and it’s attacking itself. That’s what’s causing your symptoms. In essence it’s an auto immune condition. A rare one that I don’t think has been seen like this before.”

He held up a hypo. “I made you a cocktail, it’ll help neutralize the Psilosynine in your system but I don’t have a way to prevent it from producing it yet. I’d have to do more research and some further tests….when I’ve figured out what tests.”

It was a good thing that Bethany was quick to wake and alert almost immediately because that was a lot of information. She took a minute as it all processed and then ironic self-deprecating laughter bubbled out and then was quieted. That wouldn’t help, but wasn’t that just the cherry on top of her life? “Alright so my Betazoid half that has never worked, is not going to ever work, is now running rampant in my system so my human half is trying to kill it and me in the process? That’s just peachy.”

The laugh seemed to perplex him, he tiled his head as though that wasn’t the reaction he expected but didn’t comment. As she finished he raised both his eyebrows. “Uhh yeah pretty much.” He admitted, that was a succinct summary.

She waved toward the hypo, “Go for it doc.” Psilosynine? “That makes no sense, I’ve never had any amounts, not even trace, of Psilosynine in my system. Why now? Is something else wrong with me?”

Gadi, CoS

Ryley moved the hypo to her neck and depressed a rather large dose of its contents. “This should help fairly quickly. May even lower the heart rate some. I’ll keep looking into it but if you want I can put the alpha wave inducer back on for a few hours. It’s about 3am.”

Bethy really didn’t want to deal with or process what Ryley had told her, so sleep sounded like a good idea. “I’ll opt for more sleep doc. Maybe you’ll get some more results from watching that cocktail work.” She stretched back out and closed her eyes, “Behave yourself doc.” was her final quip.

Gadi, CoS

He replaced the inducer and adjusted the frequency. “I aways do, just not in the way everyone expects. Try not to claw yourself to bits this time huh?” He limped back the few steps and pulled himself up onto the other biobed and stretched out, massaging his leg again as he did so. “Sleep well kid.”

Ryley
MD

A grin spread across her face as he adjusted the inducer, “Good for you Doc, always keep ‘em guessing.” Bethany’s head turned and opened her eyes to look at him, “What?” claw herself? Whatever Ryley meant by that Bethany wasn’t going to get the answer because the inducer was already working.

The cocktail was neutralizing the Psilosynine, which stopped the itching, and when she woke she’d have less of a headache. The fever stayed as her immune system continued to work, but it wasn’t working so hard. The adrenaline in her system dropped, allowing her heart rate to slow, though it was still higher than normal, and with the slower heart rhythm her breathing slowed and stayed that way on it’s own. The cocktail helped to clean out her blood stream and even into some of her tissues where the excess and flowed over as the blood and oxygen moved through her body. It did not however stop the gland in her paracortex from producing the Psilosynine.

Gadi, CoS

A few hours later Nurse Bailey arrived in sickbay to the sound of deep snoring. She blinked at the two sleeping figures, quickly checked both were still well and as protocol suggested turned off the alpha wave induced on Bethany. She then leapt a foot into the air when, as her hand moved to press against Ryley’s neck, he lifted a hand and grabbed her wrist preventing her making contact with his skin. Without opening his eyes he growled gently. “Leave it.” And released her.

“Don’t do that!” She exclaimed her hand on her chest as he opened his eyes and groggily sat up with a groan.

Bethany was up instantly and as Bailey yelled she was on her feet and beside her, reaching for the hand holding Bailey’s wrist in a vice, “What?…Oh.” She turned around and sat back down on the bed. Ryley could handle his own staff. She just had to wait to see if he was going to let her go or if she had to stay there for awhile. “What’dya find out, Doc?”

Gadi, CoS

Bailey now free, Ryley turned his legs over the bed and stretched with another groan. “That these biobeds are rubbish for my back and Bailey here squeals like a banshee when startled. Coffee?” He asked and got off the bed somewhat clumsily. When Bailey reached to help him he shrugged her off, gently, and took up his cane, limping off towards the CMO’s office.
