“Is she eating those? Not likely that I mean unless someone’s crashing them up and feeding her them.” He opened his eyes. “Now who’s paranoid? Anyway would come up on the scans.” He drummed his fingers rhythmically across his abdomen and was quiet again for about an hour or so, staring at the ceiling. He frowned and moving his hands slowly began scratching himself at his neck, down his chest and along the same route Bethany had.

“Blood…” he said.

=^= computer, give me an Audible readout of the patients blood test results, highlight any inflammation markers or hormone imbalances…”

=/\=Blood scan results show normal results for inflammation markers except for elevated white blood cell count. Hormone imbalances show elevated markers in her Psilosynine level. This level should be almost zero as the hormone does not spread to the blood stream as it is burned off before leaving the paracortex.=/\=

Ryley sat up. “The levels should be zero, not almost zero. No telepathy should mean no levels…” he lowered himself from the biobed, hissing as the motion caused his bad leg to cramp. Carefully he removed the handheld part of the tricorder and pointed it Bethany’s head. “ Are you expecting me to believe that high levels of a neurotransmitter and the corresponding hormone are present in someone who shouldn’t have them.” He adjusted the tricorder and looked for any indication of activity in the paracortex.

The gland that produced the Psilosynine seemed to be in over drive, but the paracortex was dormant. So that left the hormone unused and seemed to be creating a build up that had to go somewhere.

“Now that’s interesting…” Ryley said to himself. He watched the readings for a short time and moved to rummage in some of the hypospray compartments. What did he have that would reduce a hormone that shouldn’t be there…presently he returned and after some considering turned off the alpha wave induced and waited for Bethany to wake.

Bethany came awake almost instantly. Hazard of the job, the smell and sounds of sickbay came to her and she gave a disappointed mental sigh. She was still not sleeping. Wonderful. She opened her eyes to find Ryley standing over her. That was not disturbing at all. She eyed him wondering where his cane was. She was going to have to modify that thing for him. She sat up, one leg tucked under the opposite knee, foot hanging to the floor. She could still feel her heart racing. “Well sleep didn’t help.”
