Over the course of then night, even though her heart rate should have dropped in sleep in only dropped slightly, remaining high. With the higher heart rate even though her respiration dropped initially it began to climb in response to the higher heart rate and the fever remained as well. Most noticeable from the readings was that her sleep cycle was off. She reached stages 1 through 4 but never entered REM sleep. More than that, Bethany started scratching in her sleep, lightly at first, but then more forcibly, leaving marks and drawing blood. It wasn’t focused on anyone area, but seemed to be bothering her all over, with no sign of a rash.

For most of the night Ryley remained awake watching his new patient as her body tried it’s best to sleep. He made notes on each change in her heart rate, respirations and blood pressure. When she started to scratch he initially didn’t pay match attention, people figited in their sleep. However, the more forceful it became the more he focused on it. Carefully he got up and walked to the bed and watched her draw blood, frowning, for a second or so before he took hold of her wrists and stopped her. With his free hand he checked the intensity on the alpha wave inducer and increased the settings to see if that made her stop. While he waited the few seconds that would take he carefully examined the skin she had been clawing for any sort of reaction signs.

The increased intensity seemed to make her more lethargic at least, her finger twitching occasionally in a scratching like manor but no more actual scratching. She had been scratching all over, but the worst started at her neck, shoulders and chest, where she drew blood, but less intensity along her arms, abdomen and hips. No rash or hives appeared on her skin, but where she’d scratched seemed to follow where the major arteries and veins ran.

“Well that was clever.” Ryley said sarcastically to the woman’s unconscious form. “You can claw your skin off on someone else’s time.” He grumbled to himself as he began working a dermal regenerator over the scratch marks, rolling Bethany slightly to get access to her neck.

He frowned as he worked, “people don’t scratch for no reason…there’s no sign of obvious reaction so what gives…” his eyes flicked to the readouts a moment before he picked up his tricorder and began scanning along the areas she had been scratching.

“Well where’s the fun in that…” Ryley muttered as he returned to the regenerator, leaving the tricorder recording. “Right, let’s say we categorise them then. Cause one, Skin conditions. xerosis, dermatitis, psoriasis, parasites, burns, scars, insect bites, hives etc. No hives, doesn’t explain heart rate. Now…People who have very high levels of cholesterol or triglycerides may develop eruptive xanthomatosis, but that would be over large parts of skin…” he checked Bethany’s skin again. “Nope and doesn’t explain the headache. Parasites would have shown on the scans. So nope to category one.”

He stepped back to his perch on the biobed adjacent to Bethany’s. “Two, Nerve disorders. Again doesn’t fit… three…Psychiatric conditions.”

The computer trilled and then beeped. “Lt Cmdr Gadi has not been diagnosed with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder or depression. Three years ago she was treated for possible paranoia after the disbanning of her task force. The diagnosis was dismissed and she was cleared to return to duty.”

“She’s in security, paranoia isn’t a diagnosis it’s a job requirement.” The greying doctor said and shook his head. “So we rule out category 3. Category 4 is where it starts to get complicated…Internal diseases. Now… Itching on the whole body might be a symptom of an underlying illness, such as liver disease, kidney disease, anemia, diabetes, thyroid problems, multiple myeloma or lymphoma. In betazoids there’s also the issue of glandular production but if she’s not telepathic that shouldn’t be an issue…” he leaned back and stared at the ceiling. “Heart issues can be linked to all of these or some of these…or none of these…helpful Ryley…may as well throw spaghetti at the bulkhead and see what’s sticks if that’s the best you got,”

“…not you.” He said irritably and waved his hand. “Scans and tests would show internal. Microbes and pathogens aren’t that sneaky, system issues would also show…infection symptoms but no underlaying cause…” he trailed off, his eyes closing.

Silence in sickbay for a time, to the untrained and uninitiated it would be forgiven for assuming that the old cover had fallen asleep. The sound of both occupants breathing was all the could be heard along side the noise from the panel as it did it’s job.

“Just leaves Irritation and allergic reactions.” Ryley’s gruff voice said suddenly disrupting the quiet. He still lay, hands clasped on his chest with his eyes closed, “Wool, chemicals, soaps and other substances can irritate the skin and cause rashes and itching, unless she’s eating the soap or spends her off duty hours frolicking with Alterian sheep. Doesn’t seem like the sort of enjoy sheepherding as a hobby, do people keep pet sheep these days? Wher would she even keep a sheep on this ship. Can’t see Captain sweetheart approving that …could be a blanket…but she would know if every time she uses something she scratches….didn’t mention itches as a symptom…kinda a big one to miss out…” he trailed off into silence again.

“…reactions to certain drugs. I gave her drugs to stop the headache…did that cause the reaction.”

“Is she eating those? Not likely that I mean unless someone’s crashing them up and feeding her them.” He opened his eyes. “Now who’s paranoid? Anyway would come up on the scans.” He drummed his fingers rhythmically across his abdomen and was quiet again for about an hour or so, staring at the ceiling. He frowned and moving his hands slowly began scratching himself at his neck, down his chest and along the same route Bethany had.

“Blood…” he said.

=/\=Blood scan results show normal results for inflammation markers except for elevated white blood cell count. Hormone imbalances show elevated markers in her Psilosynine level. This level should be almost zero as the hormone does not spread to the blood stream as it is burned off before leaving the paracortex.=/\=

Ryley sat up. “The levels should be zero, not almost zero. No telepathy should mean no levels…” he lowered himself from the biobed, hissing as the motion caused his bad leg to cramp. Carefully he removed the handheld part of the tricorder and pointed it Bethany’s head. “ Are you expecting me to believe that high levels of a neurotransmitter and the corresponding hormone are present in someone who shouldn’t have them.” He adjusted the tricorder and looked for any indication of activity in the paracortex.

The gland that produced the Psilosynine seemed to be in over drive, but the paracortex was dormant. So that left the hormone unused and seemed to be creating a build up that had to go somewhere.

“Now that’s interesting…” Ryley said to himself. He watched the readings for a short time and moved to rummage in some of the hypospray compartments. What did he have that would reduce a hormone that shouldn’t be there…presently he returned and after some considering turned off the alpha wave induced and waited for Bethany to wake.
