“Only thirty years?” she deadpanned as she tilted her head and began to skim the titles, looking for something specific, or rather a particular genre of music. Moving along, her mind was working out the logic to the record order- if there even was one- and finally she came across something that intrigued her. Pulling it out gently, she handed it to Micah. “Show me how to work it?” The record she had picked was a mish mash of Chopin piano music.

“I’ve seen you walk around nekkid. Trust me, you work it just fine.” he said with a wink, but he took the record from her and said “Power is here.” and indicated a button. Pressing a blue light slowly began to glow. “Now… you take the record like this and…” and he slowly and methodically walked her step-by-step through the process of getting the record to play. As he set the needle down gently, the soft crackle of the needle on vinyl filled the cabin from unseen speakers. Soon, the sound of Nocturne op.9 No.2 began to sound throughout their home.
For a moment Shara was simply lost in the notes, an echo of a previous life, of people long gone.
Micak looked at her and smiled. “See? Lotsa perks to bein’ married to me already.” and he smiled softly and then said “Sha… you wanna dance with me?” and he held out his hand to her.
Micah
Turning to gaze at him, Shara moved closer and slipped her hand into his. “Of course I will.”
As they moved, Shara followed his lead easily, her mind still in part somewhere else. “My mother loved Chopin. This was actually one of the first songs she taught me after I got the basics down.”
~Shara
“She had taste, then. Did you know Chopin played the piano in the dark his whole life? He would always put out the candles in the room, even if he was playing at a party he would ask folks to put out the lights in the room. He said he was shy. I heard he only gave around 30 public concerts in his lifetime.” Micah said, his head resting on Sha’s as they moved through the music.
Micah
“I get that,” she said softly. “I never liked playing in public after I left home. It felt too… vulnerable. But living on Tracken music was a part of our everyday lives, so slowly I learned to do so again.” Moving with him, in step, in sync, everything felt content. Perfect. “When I was on Voyager, the year we found out about the demise of the Maquis, my friends arranged a really lovely surprise. I had been saving my replicator rations up for a guitar, and that is how I got that guitar I lug around, but I made a random comment about playing the piano too and that my concert pianist mother taught me, so they arranged a really wonderful surprise. They pooled all their replicator rations together to replicate an actual baby grand piano. We could have done this on the holodeck, and I had, but it wasn’t the same somehow. So the replicated a bloody piano”-her face pulled into a grin he could feel against her cheek-“and called me up to the mess hall. And then and there with that beautiful piano they got me to give a concert. We recycled it the next day because it took up too much space, but for that one night I got to be a concert pianist like my mother.”

Micah grinned as she spoke. “I bet that was a sight to see, wife. You, backlit against the stars, playing somethin’ like this while people just listened… beautiful moment, I bet.” and he paused for a long time.
She could have interjected, but instead Shara enjoyed the silence as their bodies moved to the elegant music.
“Ya know we… all the ones in Recon with me… we always thought the Maquis got shafted. Had two brothers in there, parents were Maquis, dunno from where. When the Brass heard about that, man they came rolling up on us ready to throw those boys in the brig.” and he chuckled.
Shara snorted. It was a familiar story- guilty by association.
“That was the first time I drew my weapon on an Fleet officer.” he said with a grin.
Micah
Laughing openly, she pulled back and grinned. “That doesn’t surprise me in the least. But finding people who were sympathetic, if not understanding, back then was hard. It was hard all around. I certainly ave never envied the Federation Council. They had to take a side, one way or another, and peace had been hard fought at that point. I get it. But asking colonist to just up and leave because of bureaucratic decisions parsecs away was never going to fly. And for us on Tracken it was a matter of what was right. We hadn’t been asked to leave but so many others had and we felt it was wrong. Those in power might have bene trading planets, but those planets had people living on them. I know for a fact the Cardassian colonies that flipped to the Federation weren’t happy about it either but the Cardassian government did a lot worse to remove people than the Federation did. It might have been a losing battle to say no and fight back, but I don’t think we could have lived with ourselves if we had turned a blind eye.”

Micah leaned in and kissed her… deeply, but not in a sexual way. This was love… pure and simple. He kissed her like that for a long time, then pulled back and said “I respect and admire the hell outta you, you know that? More than anyone anywhere.”
