With a smirk on her face, Shara dried and dressed, taking her time. Her head wasn’t as bad as it was earlier but it was unlikely she’d ever inflict a hangover like that upon herself anytime soon.
Stepping down the stairs she had on her own cargo pants with a loose fitting cream linen shirt that buttoned halfway down from the V neck. Hand on the rail, Shara stopped and was momentarily lost in thought, a smile slipping on to her face before she moved once again, joining Micah.
~Shara
Micah watched her come down as he stood by the wall on the far side of the fireplace. “What was that look for, wife of mine?” he asked with a curious grin and then pressed a concealed button in the wood of the wall.
“Hmmm?” she said, though she had heard him perfectly fine.
A section of the wall slid up to reveal a deep and softly lit closet… or maybe a small room. Shelves lined the walls, and each shelf held thin objects that looked almost like magazines, but stiffer…
Records. Actual vinyl records. Hundreds of them. And a turntable built into the wall. Micah stepped back and gestured for her to look, a massive smile on his face.
“Oh,” Shara said, her single word an entire sentence of wonder. Stepping in it was like she had been transported to a brand new place. But it was the smell. It was the irreplaceable scent of old, of time existing amongst the universe beyond a mortal life.
“My great-great-great-great- oh who the hell knows how many greats back Grandad and Granny started the collection when records were just starting. The family has kept it up ever since. I tell ya… my brothers and sisters? This is what they really wanted. But I hid it from ‘em when I left for the Corps. No way in hell was I gonna let this go.”
Micah
Closing the distance to the wall she reached out tentatively, letting her fingertips brush the spines of the record covers. Her hand jerked back and she was horrified. her skin had oils in them, despite having spent the last hour in and out of water. “Is it… is it okay to touch them?” She wanted to explore, hunt, see what treasures she could find.
~Shara
Micah chuckled. “Yeah, love. It’s fine. That there cloth on the side of the turntable is what you’ll wipe ‘em off with right before you put ‘em back. They all play. Took me four Ferengi importers, five thousand bars of latinum, and the threat of thirty years in a Federation prison to get the player… but get it I did. And man were they pissed when they still had to go to prison. Great record player or not… you don’t smuggle Cargelian Stimsticks in my jurisdiction.” and he chuckled.
Micah
“Only thirty years?” she deadpanned as she tilted her head and began to skim the titles, looking for something specific, or rather a particular genre of music. Moving along, her mind was working out the logic to the record order- if there even was one- and finally she came across something that intrigued her. Pulling it out gently, she handed it to Micah. “Show me how to work it?” The record she had picked was a mish mash of Chopin piano music.
~Shara
“I’ve seen you walk around nekkid. Trust me, you work it just fine.” he said with a wink, but he took the record from her and said “Power is here.” and indicated a button. Pressing a blue light slowly began to glow. “Now… you take the record like this and…” and he slowly and methodically walked her step-by-step through the process of getting the record to play. As he set the needle down gently, the soft crackle of the needle on vinyl filled the cabin from unseen speakers. Soon, the sound of Nocturne op.9 No.2 began to sound throughout their home.
For a moment Shara was simply lost in the notes, an echo of a previous life, of people long gone.
Micak looked at her and smiled. “See? Lotsa perks to bein’ married to me already.” and he smiled softly and then said “Sha… you wanna dance with me?” and he held out his hand to her.
Micah
Turning to gaze at him, Shara moved closer and slipped her hand into his. “Of course I will.”
As they moved, Shara followed his lead easily, her mind still in part somewhere else. “My mother loved Chopin. This was actually one of the first songs she taught me after I got the basics down.”
~Shara
“She had taste, then. Did you know Chopin played the piano in the dark his whole life? He would always put out the candles in the room, even if he was playing at a party he would ask folks to put out the lights in the room. He said he was shy. I heard he only gave around 30 public concerts in his lifetime.” Micah said, his head resting on Sha’s as they moved through the music.
