“What can you tell me about your past assigments Commander?” Paddy had a similar sheepish grin on his face, which he was try and failing to hide.

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“Well, let’s see,” Bethany put the glass down, leaned back in the chair and stared up at the ceiling, no one ever decorated their ceilings, ordering her thoughts. “I was just transferred from the Dresden where I served as CNS. Before that I was assigned to SF Intelligence head quarters on Earth as a specialist. In between assignments I worked at head quarters as a counselor, debriefing operatives and trying to help them. Did a stint as a stand in hand to hand trainor for a few months. My assignments consisted of information gathering, either in person or electronically.” She returned her gaze to Paddy, that ever present grin still in place. “More than that and I might have to ask for your security clearance.” Which wasn’t entirely accurate. Most of what Bethany did was not classified so unlike most Intel agents she was able to converse more freely, but there were a few.

Paddy nodded slowly, “Interesting, so what made you switch from counselling to security?” He knew that such career changes weren’t uncommon, particularly considering the fact that he himself had been wanting to be an Engineer before his degree in psych took over his young life.

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“Actually it was the other way around. During the Academy I trained for Intel and when choosing a specialization we discovered that I am very very good with computers. I was picked for different assignments because it was assumed that I would use my Betazoid heritage and talents, but since they are non-existent,” Hmmm the every present grin disappeared momentarily, “after graduation my mentor suggested I study psychology and learn to rely on observation. And I was pretty good listening to people, letting them talk, and help them, though I tend to be a little blunt, but sometimes that’s needed.” She reached forward, picked up the glass and took a long swallow from the tea.

“Funny,” Paddy said with a chuckle, “That’s also what happened with me.” Then, realising Bethy had said something that piqued his interest, “What do you mean when you said non-existent Betazoid abilities?” McMillan had scan read the file before the new COS arrived, but was determined to dig a little deeper.

Bethany took a long drink of the tea and put it down, folding her hands on her lap. “My father is Betazoid, my mother is Human. For most children that are half Betazoid that means when their telepathic gifts turn on during adolescence they are empathic. Maybe some telepathy with other telepaths. For me it was not so. I have very very little empathy. I can only sense extremely strong emotions and I could not tell you what the emotion is or where it came from. And I have no telepathy at all. By Betazoid standards I am considered disabled. It never matter much growing up. I was on Earth when my gifts should have developed. It wasn’t until I got to the Academy that I realized how much I was evaluated by cultural gifts hat I did not have.”

Paddy let out a small sigh, as if feeling the Chief’s pain, “You shouldn’t see that as a set back Commander,” he said kindly, “Look at how successful Deanna Troi is with only half of the abilities she had.”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Bethy smiled, “I don’t, well most of the time. Visiting Betazed is a trial in patience and self-worth that I don’t enjoy. Deanna Troi is very powerful Empath, and has quite a bit of telepathic skill in spades. I am not like her. I have none of that. Even assuming you are not shielding your thoughts or emotions I have no psychic impression of you at all, or anyone else on this ship.” She shrugs, “I’m not sure I would want to have those skills at this point. It seems very invasive. But my lack of talent doesn’t define my worth. I will admit I have seriously considered having my eye color permanently altered so I don’t have to explain anymore when the inevitable, ‘oh your Betazoid what am I thinking’ comes along and people look at me like I grew a third head.”

“Personally, I think your eyes add to what is an already lovely personality. I wouldn’t change them for the world. I can see however the problems you must face as a Betazoid without the abilities. If you don’t mind me asking, is it a genetic problem?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Bethany grinned, “What a nice thing to say, Paddy.” She nodded, “It is genetics but it’s not a problem exactly. My uncles were fond of teasing my father about it. Told him good genes will out. Naturally in the Betazoid species there is a very wide range of strength and ability. Normally Betazoid genes tend to be more dominant to the other species genetics. But in this case my mother’s contributions to my genetic make up were more dominant than my fathers. My father had me in and out of the Federation doctors on Earth until we figured out why. By human standards it’s simply a matter of dominant and recessive genes. I’m not sure how it would be seen on Betazed. I never bothered to ask.”

Paddy chuckled, “Well, I’m no expert genetisist, but I will say this. Don’t change them. Is there anything else you feel you need to ask?”
