Micah smiled. “Damn, but you’re a fine looking woman. I’d ask if you had a man, but there’s this file on the computer that says you do. Lucky fella, he is.” and set a pot and mug of fresh coffee and dry toast next to her head. “Look out, husband coming though.” and he stepped down into the bubbles and sat down opposite her. As he waited for the water to calm, he looked and Sha and just… smiled.

Micah

Eyes still closed, she let the warm water soothe her body and seemed to pay no mind to her companion. Husb– nope, not yet. “I’d say ‘Bite me’, but then you probably would and I’d probably like it,” she deadpanned.

“You ain’t wrong.” Micah said and relaxed in the hot water. “On either count.”

Shara just snorted and continued her inward musings while her head seemed to be in drum practice.

A few minutes of silence passed and then he said “Ya know… I do kinda want to bite you. Well… not bite.” and he smiled to himself.

“Uh huh…”

“You know… wife… I’ve been told that its actually impressive how long I can hold my breath.” and he chuckled

Micah

Opening her eyes, Shara lifted her head again and looked at him. “Save that thought for later when we both don’t feel like there’s a marching band going about our heads”

“Consider it pinned for after band practice.” and he closed his eyes and leaned back.

Frothy water dripped from her arm as she reached for the fresh cup of coffee and focused on the warmth that travelled into her fingertips. “Husband,” she said softly before shaking her head. “I think the thing that is hard for me Micah is that a part of me is just mad that it happened that way. I’ve not even been sure I ever wanted to get married again. I wasn’t sure it was necessary. It doesn’t mean what I feel for you is less important, just that I didn’t think the whole legal thing was necessary.”

At the word ‘husband’ he opened his eyes and looked at her. “Necessary? Probably not. I mean, I don’t see you having any little Micahs and Shas, no matter how good a shape you are in. But some things you do just ‘cause you wanna. Necessary ain’t got shit to do with this, I don’t think. I think drunk Sha and drunk Micah just… well… wanted to. Not for anyone else… just for them… for us.”

As the next thought rolled into her head, Shara could feel the strong emotion surfacing again. “I don’t want to be an absent wife again. But I’m not ready to retire. I still feel like I have something I can contribute to Starfleet. Hell, Faye even suggested that I’d make a great instructor, and maybe I would. I just… I’m not ready to be in one place again permanently. It was hard enough on Tracken, and Edward knew that. He called me his Stargazer because I was always looking up at them. Whatever ship they assign me to will be as stationary as I can manage. At least right now.” How could they have a marriage if she was always gone? And he was up and off at a moment’s notice too? What kind of life would that be? If they were just ports in a busy life for each other, why get married? Why not just let it be open and flexible?

~Shara

“I ain’t ever gonna ask you to give up what you do, Sha. I know you won’t ask me to either. And so what if you ain’t ready to be in one place? So what if you or me or both of us gets called away? Now, I aion’t never been married, so you are gonna have to tell me if I’m off-base here… but I always looked at being married as having someone to call home… someone to come home to. And I wanna be that for you, Sha. I want to be that someone. I don’t care if I see you once in a blue moon… you’ll still be my place. My home.” and he looked at her and then a thought came to him and he smiled.

“Besides… since we’re married… you get to call this place yours for real. So… really… welcome home, Sha. Doors yours to use whenever you want. You are the lady of the house, after all…”

Micah

There were a lot of things that had happened to her that had been the kinds of experiences that had proved useful in her line of work. Her life in the Delta Quadrant on Voyager had been a large one. But people often only saw the exciting parts of it, romanticizing the journey. It was easy to dismiss the real and heavy toll those seven years had had on each and every person on that ship. “You don’t know what it’s like to want so desperately to get home and not be able to. To be so far from those you love and have no way to get to them, and worse, told you have to go along with one particular path to getting home. I’m not saying they were wrong, but up until we learned about the Dominion and what they did to the rest of the Maquis back in the Alpha Quadrant, I was desperate to get back and it was slowly driving me crazy not to be able to. Through Faye I’ve learned what my absence was like for them, how devastating it was. And the worst part is we both know damn well that we can’t promise each other sh!t when it comes to actually being able to come home. And that scares me Micah. I don’t want to leave you a widow because of my work. And I don’t want to be a widow again. I don’t know how to do any of this!” She had only just surfaced as Shara Calloway. How the hell was she supposed to find her way through her new life, and be a mother, and now also be a wife? Lowered lip trembling ever so slightly, she cast her gaze out the expansive widows.
