Micah looked up at the ceiling and smiled. “My Pa was somethin’… hardest man I ever known. Could pull a hickory stump outta the ground with his bare hands. Saw him do it more than once. And he could get bit by a rattlesnake and keep on working. But not a mean bone in his body. He was a good man. And it’s not jus’ me sayin’ that. Folks that knew him still say he was somethin’. Always there to help anybody that needed helpin’, always ready to stand up fer folks what needed standin’ up for. Great hunter and fishermen. Helluva good farmer, too. Taught me just about everythin’ I know about the woods. And about people. He always told me ‘Son, what you do is start off nice. You get folks on your side more often than not just by bein’ nice to ‘em. ‘Cause a lotta folks don’t get treated nice all that often. So you do what you can to be nice, and the rest’ll fall inta place from there.’ I guess he saw me growin’ up as the trouble-maker. Not inna bad way, mind ya, but I was always gettin’ in fights and trouble at school and whatnot. He’d always come down to the school when I got sent to the office.” Micah smiled and took a drink. “He never got mad… just look at me and shake his head. That look of disappointment? Oh hell… cut ya deeper than any blade, I tell you.” and he smiled again. “But he’d always talk to me about it, ya know? Never got mad, never yelled. But he always made sure I knew what I done. And if it was trouble I got standing up fer somebody? Well, then he’d just smile at me and say ‘Good on ya, boy.’ Oh Sha…” and a tear filled his eye, “Sha… that was high praise right there. I absolutely lived for those words.” He looked at her and smiled. “He’d have really liked you. YOu two woulda gotten on like nobody’s business.” and he laughed.
Micah
She smiled up at him, brushing her fingers along his cheek. She suspected that he was right and a part of her of was saddened by not having someone like that in her life. Oh, her mom had tried when she was alive, but she was just trying to get by much of the time, hiding her pain so it wouldn’t affect her children. They knew anyway. “I’m sorry I didn’t get to meet him, and I’m sorry you didn’t get to have him in your life longer. I know your mother is gone, but what about all those siblings. You close?”

Micah shook his head. “Naw, not really. But they live a different kinda life… lives. Oldest sister married rich and gets her jollies cheating on her husband with whoever strikes her fancy. Works out, though, ‘cause hubby is doing the same thing. She’s just waiting to outlive the guy… which she prolly will, he’s twenty years older. Second oldest sister is some kinda corporate exec. She and I talk from time to time. Only one who has never asked me for a favor. Youngest girl in the family married some religious nut. Last I heard they were somewhere in Romulan space ‘spreading the word’ of whatever cult they belong to. Oldest brother retired from Star Fleet and got hitched to some dancer on a Ferengi Space station. Now he thinks he’s some kinda professional gambler. And my older brother is the one that tried to orchestrate the selling of our land here, so when I bought ‘em out he took his money and ran for the first transport off Earth. He’s in a Bajoran prison for fraud. He isn’t exactly guilty, I looked into it. But he was too stupid to not get caught up in a racket, so there he is.” and he took a drink.
Micah
“Interesting bunch,” she said with a tiny snort. “I just have the one brother. Gavin. It’s always been awkward with us. I used to say I left him when I was sixteen, but let’s be real, I ran away. And I let Gavin there at twelve years old because he had a slightly better relationship with our dad than I did. He thought I was nuts to get married after only knowing Edward for six months and refused to come and be a witness. We were just starting to talk again after his Starfleet career took off and then the whole treaty happened and when we invited the Maquis in, he told us exactly how he felt about it and we haven’t spoken since.” She took a good swallow of the clear liquid. “Hell, I wouldn’t have thought he even knew I was alive if he hadn’t sneakily gone and been Faye’s sponsor… which she didn’t know about,” she said, brows raised as she looked at Micha. It was hard to pull one over on Faye but it had happened. “Faye and Daggum are inviting him to the wedding. Can’t find a good reason to object, but....” She blew out a breath.

“Wow.” was all Micah said for a minute. “That’s one hell of a way to have a family reunion, I suppose.” He looked at Shara. “But… their wedding, their rules I guess… right?”He took a drink and smiled at her. “So do I get to be your plus one for the big event? Or have we not reached the ‘If I have to go to my cousins third wedding this weekend then you by god have to go too I’m doing this alone’ stage of our relationship yet?”
Micah
The grin that slipped onto her face was amused and deeply tender. “Hmmmm, well that is the question, now isn’t it.” She tapped her index finger on his chin. “I doubt Faye would be surprised to be honest, but yeah, we’re together, so yes, you’re obliged to attend my daughter’s wedding. I mean, someone’s got to take me for a spin on the dance floor here and there.” More ‘shine. But this point her tongue was starting to feel thick and she was slightly light headed. It was like her head was this large heavy ball balancing on a tiny stick. But then again his shoulder was a good landing spot, so all good there.
“I do really care about you Micah, just for the record.”
