Bethany finished with the CNS and then made her way to the bridge and to the CO’s ready room exactly on time for her scheduled meeting with the CO. She took in the bridge, especially the location of the security and tactile station. She knew the Asimov had a very unique AI system and she was eager to get to know it and learn to work together, given her specialty. She rang the chime on the door and waited, at ease, for permission to enter.

Sara jolted slightly at the sound of the chime. “Enter!” she called. She expected the new Chief of Security to be arriving, but this day had somewhat slipped away, and she hadn’t noticed the passing hours.

Bethany entered and looked around the room, taking in any hints about the personality of the person who occupied the space before coming to attention. “Lt Cmdr Bethany Gadi, reporting for duty Captain.”

Bethany, upon entering, would see a somewhat sparsely decorated office. The traditional model of the ship was mounted on the wall, and a violin rested on a shelf. There was a box in the corner that somewhat suggested the Captain had yet to finish unpacking.

“Good afternoon Commander. Welcome to the Asimov.”

“Thank you, Captain. She’s quite the little power house isn’t she?” Bethany had studied the specs for the ship when she’d gotten the assignment. She liked it. What was that old Earth saying her uncles were so fond of? Good things come in small packages. Bethany thought that fit the bill quite nicely for the Asimov.

“Quite so. She’s a remarkable little vessel.” Sara rose and extended her hand across her desk to the CoS. “How was the trip here?”

Bethany shook hands, firm, decisive, self assured, but a lack of ego. “Nostalgic. I got to spend it with my mentor. She’s keeping my shuttle for me since there was no room on board. It’s been a long time since I spent any significant time with her, so it was a nice experience. Nothing of note happened except for a very nice light show passing by a stellar nursery.”

“Sounds nice.” Sara smiled as she gestured to the chair opposite her. “Please, have a seat. I’m going to have some coffee, I survive on it. Is there something I can get you from the replicator?”

“Hazelnut Coffee, black please.”

Sara settled back into her chair. “Now, Commander, tell me a little about yourself, your history.”

“I knew early on I wanted to work in intelligence. I grew up on stories from the adults and older children and their work in the Dominion resistance. I was eager to take my place among those that were heroes. However, I learned very quickly when I entered that tract at the academy that my work did not fall under the spectacular stories I thought there would be, and so I dual majored in security. We discovered that I am adept at gathering Intel by listening and blending with a crowd. I have very little talent or skill telepathically or empathically, but through total accident I discovered early on I had knack with computers. My intel mentor and instructors quickly steered me towards electronic information gathering and information systems security, and hacking. I am extremely adept at creating havoc on computer systems and not getting caught. I earned my degree in psychology after I graduated. I have found it invaluable to my work. I have spent my career either on deep cover assignments or filling ”

“Quite interesting.” Sara settled back in her chair and sipped her coffee “I think we might be able to utilize those skills here, if you’re willing and able. Is there some special equipment you need to run these operations?”

Bethany grinned slightly. If she wasn’t willing and able she wouldn’t have been sent here, well able at least. Willing was a hard commodity to come by. “Actually I brought all the equipment I need with me. I’ll set it up in the security office. I’m very excited to see how the ship’s AI and I can integrate. I’ve never worked with an AI so sophisticated as the one on board Asimov. Have you named it?”

Sara shook her head. “I can’t say we have. I haven’t personally been able to familiarize myself with it, and engineering has been occupied with repair operations. Make getting the onboard AI up, named, and mission ready part of your setup. That being said, I’m glad you came so prepared. This is a small ship, and we dip into a little of everything, so being ready for whatever may come is to your advantage.”

“That’s not a problem. If there is anything wrong, software wise, I’ll get it fixed. If it’s hardware I might have to get engineering or science to help.” Bethany nodded, “I’ll remember that, Captain. What can you tell me about the security department?” She was interested to know what the captain saw as strengths and weaknesses. Bethany was aware that a lot of the command crew was new and may not have a full picture, but she was interested in their initial impressions.

Sara nodded. “Our engineering chief is Lt Moor, I’m sure he’ll lend some staff to whatever equipment needs you have.” She didn’t know everyone by name, but she did know the exact allocation of manpower throughout the ship. “As for security, there’s 20 officers, including yourself. Senior most of your staff is Lt Piper Grant, a fine officer. Security and tactical make up the largest department on a small ship. You’ll probably also be working in some capacity with the Intelligence Officer, Commander Shara Calloway, though she acts somewhat independently of the traditional department structure.”

Bethany nodded and made note of Lt Grant and that she should seek her out very soon. As well as finding time to meet this Cmdr Colloway. Bethany understood from her own experiences the necessity to work independently, which could be parallel or perpendicular, to the rest of the crew. But it would be important to know her and make it clear that Bethany had no intentions of stepping in her way. Her own background was Intel, but that wasn’t her job now. But hopefully they would be able to assist each other when needed. “I will be sure to make time to get to know them both. Is there anything you have found lacking or especially well done in the security department?”
