[snip]Sitting in the rec halls bar Kala sipped on her Pina Colada it aromas wafting around the unjoined trill creating a tropical feel and her third for the night meaning she was rather enjoying the rum and coconut-based drink. For the past hour, she had been watching a young family of four play what people called ‘bowling’ she had never played or heard of it before but it seemed to involve rolling a heavy sphere down a long path toward 10 odd-shaped statues in the aim of knocking them down, though it appeared there were different variants of the game because the older woman had barriers which erected from the side of the stopping it going into the grooves on either side meaning she scored zero and the children used a device which they loaded the ball and pushed it down.

“An old earth game,” came the southern British accent of the first officer as he came into the hall, giving a nod. “Aim is to knock as many of them down as you can in one hit,” he added. He had gone bowling with his brother when they were younger, and it was still a hobby he enjoyed himself from time to time. “It’s been a few years since I last went to a bowling alley myself,” Simon said.

Kala appreciated the explanation, “And how do they win? Sometimes they are sad and sometimes they are happy” Just then a cheer went up as the older man knocked down all the pins, but then moments later eight of then ten were knocked with either corner still standing. “And they always see angry when that happens. It is an interesting sport.” She turned her full attention to the arrival, “I don’t think we’ve met, though I do know you who you are I’m Ensign Gorvel. It’s nice to meet you, sir.”

“Well, you get two attempts each round to knock as many of the pins down. They get annoyed when it ends up like that because it makes it almost impossible to knock down all ten pins, if you didn’t on your first attempt each round,” he continued explaining. “If you knock down all ten pins on your first turn of the round, that’s even better,” he added. “And I’m Lieutenant Commander Simon Starr,” he said in the southern British accent that was not of the city. From the accent, it sounded like he was raised on a British farm.

Kala smiled, she knew who he was but didn’t want to come across as too eager but it was nice to listen to his voice so she certainly didn’t mind his introducing himself. She had heard it before when she visited London, which was on Earth and the Capital of the United Kingdom. “Would you be willing to show me how to play Lieutenant Commander?” She asked wistfully, “I mean how hard really is it?” She looked back to the alleys.

“It’s been a while, but sure,” Simon said with a smile, gesturing over to one of the free alleys. “the floor by the bowling alley is extremely slick. So, there are special shoes to wear,” he walked over to the replicator and said “Size ten bowling shoes,” he asked the computer to create. It took a few moments but the shoes were made, and he put them on. “These help with the grip on the floor,” he explained before setting up the computer for a new game with two people. “So, do you want to go first or second?” he asked. “Unlike cards, going first doesn’t necessarily give an advantage,” he smiled.

Kala followed the XOs lead and had replicated a pair of size six shoes for her small dainty feet and slipped them on, leaving her high knee boots to one side. She twisted her foot in different directions and once even tried slipping the shoe across the floor but as the Commander had explained they did offer some friction. “I think I will go second, and see how you do it,” She said with a nod as she sat on one of the chairs that surrounded the center console and where the balls appeared from, it was then she noticed the ball had different numbers and were colored differently. “Why are they numbered and colored differently? The Balls?”

Simon reached for a size 11 ball. “Well, that determines size and weight. Everybody has a different preference to what they use, it takes some trial and error to work out what ball size and weight is right for you,” he explained. The one he picked up was relatively heavy, but he didn’t seem to struggle with it. “The aim is simple, without crossing the line, roll the ball down the alley, and hit as many pins as you can,” he said as he extended his arm back, and threw the ball so it rolled down the middle of the alley.
The young female Trill watched the executive commander carefully as he demonstrated the different size balls, how to put his fingers in the holes and then how to roll the ball down the lane, with what she assumed was an impressive speed. She watched it as it streaked down the lane and towards the white pins at the end.
The ball curved off to the side slightly leaving a triangle at the back of the formation of pins. Simon picked up his second ball. “If you don’t knock all the pins down in one turn, you get a second throw. However, if you do - you get more points, but your turn ends,” he told Kala whilst picking up another size 11 ball, this time not aiming directly for the centre. Instead, he went for the small triangle and the LCARS display keeping score marked a / on the scorecard. “That’s called a spare, if you knock down all the pins but not on your first throw, you get 10 points. Each pin is 1 point, Strikes are special, which we’ll come too when we cross that bridge,” he smiled.

“Ok, I think I understand it all. Pick a ball that I like, go to the line and then roll it down the lane so it hits all the pins and get as many as I can with two balls, but hope for one pin” Finally standing she rolled several different balls in varying weights so she could slide her fingers into the three holes. She finally settled for a 7, it was also a lovely purple.
She held the ball inside the crook of her left arm but kept the three fingers in the three holes as she moved to the line. Frowning she aimed towards the pins and began swinging her arm back and forth and released the ball, it immediately fell into the gutter and rolled down the left hand side before disappearing. “What does that mean?” She asked looking to Simon for guidance.
As Kala begins to take her swing, Simon watches to see what she does right and wrong. That way when she took the bowl, he could say how to improve. As he was watching the unaimed swing, he watched with an unreadable expression, but there was a sense of a relaxation from him as he recalled the first time he bowled, well threw, the ball. It didn’t go well, bouncing over the pins. That was quite some time ago, but he couldn’t help but give a small smile.
“It’s OK, I did a lot worse on my first time, I promise. It takes practice. But some tips, before stepping up, visualise how you want the ball to go. You don’t want to throw it too hard, take a couple of steps and lean into it,” Simon explained as there was a clunking sound as the ball returned and the pins didn’t reset. “Have another shot, this time - don’t rush it, and take more of an aim, aim for the middle of the alley as best you can,” he instructed.
Feeling a little embarrassed Kala took his suggestions on board and picked up the same ball which had appeared after several noisy clunks and bangs at the end of the ball retrieval system. The young Trill carried it as she did before over to the line at the end of the bowling lane and recalled his advice. She envisioned the ball hitting the pins at the bottom and dead center before falling over. She dropped her arm to her side and took several tester swings, this time going for accuracy instead of power. With one final swing, she released the ball.
Time seemed to slow as she watched it roll down the lane, holding her breath until finally, the ball hit the pins slightly of the center which seemed to have had a better result than hitting dead center because all but one pin had fallen down. “Awesome!” She said turning around and smiling at Simon grateful for his help. “Couldn’t have done it without!” Kala walked back towards him and looked to the scoreboard above the control panel which showed her name with a line, which she gathered was the miss and then the number 9.

Trax was hearing from all over the ship about a game called 10 pins. He was rather intrigued by the idea but he never heard of the game before. As he entered the recreation center as it was bustling with activity and chatter. He stopped a moment or to see if he knew anyone. He remembered most or all that were there from there physicals but haven’t talked to any of them in some time. He tried to keep a smile on but it faltered on him as it became a simple straight face. As he continued in casually smelling pizza and other funfair foods along with nachos. As he moved over to the concession stand. As he ordered some nachos and Classic Pepsi. As he waited there for the order to become ready as he took in the recreation center better. As he saw the first officer and the others talking but did not make out what they were saying as the attendant placed the food on a tray for Trax as he moved to a small cafe type table and took a seat and started nibbling on the nacho chips. He bit into a green type veggie it was really hot. even though it was smothered in cheese. As he stopped as his face got red as he quickly took a drink of his beverage.

Dinui walked in the rec center having heard about the game of ten pin she was more than happy to join in. Her roommate at the academy had introduced her to the game. She wasn’t an expert but she had fun playing. She smiled as passed by Trax he appeared to have inadvertently eaten a jalopanio pepper or something close to it by the expression on his face and the way he was drinking his beverage. Dinui debated a moment before she turn to watch the lanes to see if there was an open one. She didn’t want to intrude on Trax and his meal without an invitation.

Trax came up for air as he placed the glass down on the table. “Hello, Doctor Xi’Indrai! How are you?” Trax said calmly to him as he did his best to let the heat subside.

Dinui turned around and regarded him, “Good evening Doctor Trax, I am doing well thank you, are you going to play a game as well or are you just getting familiar with some new foods?” She asked lightly while trying to pretend she didn’t notice his red face from the pepper he’d eaten. Dinui didn’t want to bruise his pride by accident.

“Well… the food for starters is good.” Trax said softly to her. “As for the game never heard of it or ever played it before.” Trax said with a blank look on his face. “I guess I have to get a better understanding of it before I consider playing.” Trax said calmly to her as he motioned the concessioner for another drink.
