Lt Waryn was in Main Engineering on Deck 41, right in front of the warp core. He was listening with a faint smile on his face as a group of excited Crewman finished telling him how they had fixed the treadmill effect on one of the holodecks.

That particular holodeck had been a nagging problem for longer than he liked. Izak would have jumped in himself and fixed it already if he hadn’t been part of that runabout mission.

Ultimately he was glad the holo technicians were able to solve it on their own. The troubleshooting effort made them more knowledgeable about their system, and success would make them more confident.

“Good job everyone… even you Vix!” The technicians laughed as he singled out the burly bajoran with an inside joke. “Seriously though… that was a complex problem that required you to look at the entire suite rather than just the force field generators. Great Engineers need to be able to switch back and forth between a focused view of a specific system and a holistic view of the entire ship to understand how everything connects. You should all be very proud of yourselves.”

Lt Waryn shook their hands and said a few more words as as he sent them on their way.

The Chief Engineer was about to take a report from the Reactor Chief when he saw the XO approaching with the new CO. Izak had looked into the available information on Captain T’Nara as soon as he learned she would be their new CO and recognized her instantly.

He ran a hand through his hair, making it mostly presentable.
“Captain, Commander,” he addressed the two senior officers politely as he approached them.

“Mr. Waryn. I am Captain T’Nara. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant.”

The Captain was both formal and polite… not that he’d expect anything less than professionalism from a Vulcan. She was shorter than he was, and not that much older… but she had an air of authority about her. Again, it was not surprising considering her public record… and what Captain Becket had shared before he left.

“Welcome to Main Engineering. And welcome aboard the Ark Angel, Ma’am… your reputation proceeds you. Would you like a tour… or would prefer a status report?”

Charlotte stood quietly beside Captain T’Nara, allowing the initial introductions to take place without interruption. As was proper, the department head and commanding officer were establishing their first professional rapport.

When Lieutenant Waryn finished, Charlotte spoke.

“If I may, Captain.”

She looked to T’Nara before continuing.

“I’d recommend beginning with the tour. Lieutenant Waryn takes considerable pride in his department, and seeing Main Engineering firsthand will provide valuable context for the status report.”

She glanced around Engineering, watching the engineers return to their stations after Waryn’s praise.

“As you’ve just seen, Captain, Lieutenant Waryn believes in developing his people as much as maintaining the ship. It’s one of the reasons Engineering has consistently performed to such a high standard.”

Turning back to Waryn, she offered a small nod.

“Lieutenant, if you would, please show the Captain the department as you see fit. Once you’ve finished, we can discuss the current condition of the ship and any engineering matters requiring the Captain’s attention.”

“Yes Ma’am… I can do that.”

Charlotte tapped her combadge in response.

=/= Acknowledged, Lieutenant Storm. Maintain the approved flight plan and proceed with the slingshot maneuver back toward Starbase 243. Keep sensors active and report any deviations or unexpected traffic immediately. =/=

She closed the channel and turned her attention back toward Captain T’Nara and Lieutenant Waryn.

“Captain, the ArkAngel is approaching Pluto and preparing for the return leg of our route. All indications are that the ship is operating normally.”

She offered a respectful nod.

“Please continue, Lieutenant Waryn. I believe the Captain would like to see how the ship and crew operate together.”

“Very well, Commander. And of course by all means Lieutenant.” She spoke to both.

Izak waited for the XO to coordinate with the Chief Helmsman and indicate they were ready for the tour. “Captain, Commander… welcome once again to Main Engineering… and the Ark Angel’s warp core.”

He walked backwards toward the Core and gestured, offering them the chance to take it in. A railing stood about a meter and a half from the heart of the warp core… the M/ARA. The area inside the railing was open to decks 40 and 42. Approaching it enabled the viewer to look up or down and see the entire length of the Warp Core, with similar railings on those decks and other engineers working diligently.

Five consoles stood equally spaced around the railing… but the area immediately forward of the core was open. “As I’m sure you’re aware, the Ark Angel boasts a Class 10 Warp Core, making it one of the fastest ships in the fleet. It was overhauled just after our arrival at the Starbase, though I can’t take credit for that.”

Lt Waryn flashed a sheepish grin. “I was off on an away mission and only recently returned. The procedure was performed almost flawlessly by my shift leaders… with the guidance of our most senior crewman, Warrant Officer Kotok and Senior Chief Vo.”

The Chief Engineer paused at that comment. “I should mention that we are a little light on seasoned officers at the moment. Engineering Department has just three Lieutenants Junior Grade… two of whom were promoted internally after serving onboard the Ark Angel. I’ve only been commissioned for a little over a year… and been Chief Engineer for less than half of that.”

Izak met the Captain’s gaze with a faint smile and relaxed shoulders. “While our team might be young… we are also hungry. We don’t shy away from the hard jobs and have progressed by leaps and bounds this last year.”

“Whatever you need, Captain, and whenever you need it… Engineering Department will be ready to answer the call.”

Charlotte listened with quiet satisfaction as Lieutenant Waryn concluded his introduction.

A faint smile crossed her face.

“I believe that statement reflects this department rather well, Captain.”

She looked toward T’Nara.

“Lieutenant Waryn is being modest. Since assuming the position of Chief Engineer, he has built a department that works exceptionally well together. He’s fostered an environment where junior officers are encouraged to learn, take initiative, and accept responsibility.”

She gestured toward the engineers working around the warp core.

“What you’re seeing isn’t simply technical proficiency. It’s confidence. They trust their chief, and he trusts them.”

Turning to Waryn, she nodded appreciatively.

“The overhaul was completed ahead of schedule and without incident. That’s a testament not only to your leadership but to the engineers you’ve trained.”

She returned her attention to T’Nara.

“Captain Becket often said that a ship’s greatest asset wasn’t its warp core or its weapons—it was the people who operated them. Engineering has consistently proven that philosophy correct.”

Charlotte folded her hands behind her back.

“I have every confidence that, should the ArkAngel be called upon, Lieutenant Waryn and his department will deliver.”
