It was the next morning after their impromptu R&R on Sall III’s colony BBQ. Rested from their revelry and partying, the crew were now back on board and back onto their normal shift rotations. With their original task complete, they now had a second task, assigned by he colony Governor, to investigate a nearby unclaimed system, where not long before the Ark Angel’s arrival the colony had detected some energy emissions which may have been weapons fire of some kind, but due to local ion storm interference they had no way to be sure, and given their limited local defense craft, waited until the Ark Angel came to request it be checked on now a few days later.

Captain Becket came out of his ready room and stepped onto the bridge. He looked around and smiled before he would take his captains chair. As he sat down he looked over at his first officer and looked at him. “Commander systems check.” He said with a nod. Suddenly he smiled back at him as well.

In a rare lull between scheduled appointments, Lieutenant Alex Cross stepped onto the bridge of the Ark Angel, the familiar hum of systems settling around him like a steady heartbeat. The energy was different this morning—focused, purposeful. Whatever they had enjoyed planetside was now neatly set aside, replaced by the quiet professionalism of a crew back on duty.

He paused just long enough to take in the space. The bridge lighting was set to standard operations, consoles alive with soft LCARS glow, officers already moving through their checks. At the center, Captain Becket had taken his chair—calm, composed, already guiding the rhythm of the room.

Cross moved with quiet confidence down the slight curve of the command well, offering a respectful nod to the Captain as he passed him. There was no need to interrupt—presence alone was enough.

Reaching the Counselor’s station to the Captain’s side, Cross eased into the CNS chair, settling in with practiced familiarity. His posture was relaxed but attentive, one arm resting lightly on the chair’s arm his eyes moved across the bridge—reading the room more than the displays. The subtle tension in shoulders, the cadence of voices, the unspoken anticipation of the unknown system ahead.

His gaze flicked briefly toward the viewscreen, then back to the crew.

Whatever they were about to find out there… he was ready to observe, to listen, and, if needed, to steady the minds behind the mission.

Riley was receiving status on the department on his tablet. “All departments were ready Captain” he said with that thick Irish accent. He took his seat to the right of the captain. Ready to see what’s out there

He looked at his first officer and then looked at his counselor. “Let’s punch it.” Becket said. With the fact that this is a favor from the governor he’s happy to do anything.

As soon as Izak got the brief on their follow on tasking, he instructed Ensign Boras and Gamma shift to run a diagnostics on all key systems and to recalibrate the sensors if needed.

The next morning he was up early to catch the tail end of Gamma shift and was a little frustrated with the report he received regarding the sensors. While they were technically were within tolerances, it was just barely. Lt Waryn was annoyed with the night shift team, but he knew he was mostly annoyed with himself at not being more clear. My wording was vague and open to interpretation… so that’s mostly on me. Izak still felt Boras should have taken the initiative simply because its what he would have done in Boras’s position, but he shelved that thought for the moment.

“We’ll be jumping to investigate some unidentified energy emissions, so the systems need to be at their best. The sensors are technically withn specs, but it would have only taken a few hours for your to optimize them. Make a note for turnover… I need Alpha shift to recalibrate the main sensors first thing, so they are available when we arrive at the new system.”

Ensign Boras nodded, and continued his preparations for shift turnover.

Izak grabbed a quick breakfast, check his messages, and returned to main engineering in time for the Captain to give the order to jump to warp speed. “Alright Alpha shift… we’re on the clock now. Let’s make these next few hours count.”

Ollie stepped onto the bridge and relieved the officer at the tactical station, tapping a few commands to bring the console to his preferred configuration. He glanced around at the rest of the officers gathered on the bridge already. A sense of excitement as they went to warp was a nice shift from the relaxing time they had just had down on the planet. He stretched his neck and turned his attention to the sensors, ready to take on whatever they might find in the neighboring system.

Soral elected to take a position on the bridge, ensuring his immediate availability when required.

Preparedness minimized delay, and delay, in matters of diplomacy and command, could introduce unnecessary complications.

He stood composed at his station, attentive and ready to respond the moment he was called upon.
